Fallout: Winter Wonderland?

Post » Fri May 13, 2011 1:07 pm

So this has been eating at me, am I one of the only people who thinks the idea of a Fallout in a winter wasteland is 'bad'?

I mean, all these people sit here and go 'desert, sand, rubble, hot sun' APOCALYPSE!

I honestly think Fallout should explore a 'Fallout:Anchorage' kind of path, something that shows a Wintery Wasteland. I mean, Wasteland doesn't HAVE to be a hot sunny desert. While this is about a future fallout game, I'm not soley doing that, but what I'm asking is, is the idea of a frozen wasteland really THAT bad?

Seriously, we need a Alaskan Fallout, or Hawaiian Fallout. :|

I'd like if it were tropical like south Florida because there would be beaches and I'd also like if it rained in the game and we actually got to see FLOWING water and tidal waves. I'd just like to see coasts. even if they do the next game in Massachusetts or New York City.

How would a game engine replicate walking through many feet so snow? Don't get me wrong the idea is intriguing but the game would look stupid is the ground is just white and the whole point is Fallout in a "winter wasteland".

Also I don't see why Fallout would be in Alaska. Why Operation Ancorage? By the time of the Great War America had taken it back and were now deep in China.

Still heres an game like Tactics for the Xbox that got cancelled: http://fallout.wikia.com/wiki/Fallout_Extreme

Well, the "sand and rubble wasteland" is kind of stereotypical for the post-apocalypse, Mad Max, A Boy and His Dog, Book of Eli... Or I think it's more the color, like brown and gray and burned-out, kinda like The Road or Doomsday, although Doomsday was kinda colorful, being a tribute film to alot of other awesome films. I didn't like Operation: Anchorage that much, maybe it was because the whole simulation thing, maybe it was because living in Sweden I am pretty tired of snow, or maybe I just thought it had too much white and different shades of gray (when it comes to moral decisions, shades of gray is cool, but when it comes to color...). I think it would need more color. Not as much snow, not as windy, not feeling so big and empty and linear of course. I think if they put in a lot of different colors, like the sky isn't that cloudy, maybe not that much snow so you see patches of dirt sometimes, buildings/ruins can vary a lot more than concrete, pine trees, wildlife, fire, people not dressed in winter camo, much more interesting indoor areas so we can skip and shelter us from snow, etc... (could also add to hardcoe the option of staying indoors and stand by fires, dressing properly and not swim in the water to avoid freezing to death)

Well I didnt mean it HAS to be in Anchorage. I was just using it as a context of 'Not all wastelands are dirt sand and rubble.' I don't know, maybe it's just because Fallout has always been desert. Mainly Op:Anch was a nice change of scenery in terms of ice and snow.

You know actually, I think a woodland/swamp Fallout would be a bit fun.. not entirely a swamp of course.

Like the country part of (wait actually, almost of all alabama is country..) alabama.

Mutant deer would be awesome.

I just thought OA felt cold (no pun intended), colorless and empty :/ It was quite fun, but everything felt so big and nothing but snow and mountains (which it of course is in real life aswell) but, I don't know. Point Lookout was a nice change of scenery, with a marshland and lots and lots of vegetation, and the swamp people are really cool, though I would like if not everything has to be hostile all the time. I'd also like if there was music to their dancing...

There could be a game taking place in Canada, but not too far north :) I'd like to see how pre-war annexed Canada looks now, with maybe decendants of US soldiers, decendants of Canadian rebels and communist insurgents (that does not shoot you on sight, thank you... just because I like the Speech skill most of all skills...)

To be quite honest. It could be Fallout: Bioshock Under the Ocean for all I care. As long as they change up the scenery for a whole game, I'd be a happy man.

You know I do want to find a Vault that somehow wound up underwater and everyone's still alive through some miracle air vent to the surface.

I wonder how viable a winter wonderland setting would be? Things like major earthquakes change the spin of the planet, I can only imagine how total nuclear annihilation would affect the overall global climate. Is a snowy winter even possible? ...or maybe most of Canada turns into a glacier or something...?

I guess in a creative sphere anything is possible!

Well, Mt. Charleston (Jacobstown) has now, and it's in the middle of a Post-War Mojave, yet it is still snowy. So I'm sure if it gets to the right places, then it's possible. Then I could listen to Mr. New Vegas's 'Nuclear Winter Wonderland' on holotape. :fallout:

I have been wanting a Fallout that took place in winter for god knows how long. I think it would be a nice change from the heat and sun etc. Also snow camouflaged guns would be pretty raw. :gun:

Ronto?

Yes, Toronto :) Then we have some action further north than Fallout has been so far, not in USA for once (though it was annexed pre-war), and we can have that "underwater vault" in Lake Ontario.

This is why we need a community written Fallout

Community written?
By us?
Here?
My god...
It'd be awful! D:
Imagine the people who don't fully grasp the lore.
The game would be filled with deathclaw companions, wannamingos, super mutant behemoths and Chinese psyker elf armies. O_O
The horror... :shakes:

If it were written by select members on the other hand then yes.

Let's rephrase this. "Written by the community that is recognized to know, appreciate, care, and lovingly defend the lore and story of Fallout as a series."

The vast majority of the new places in the East that Bethesda introduced us to are north of D.C., the farthest north so far being Ronto and the Commonwealth... if they continue this trend of focusing on the north-east and continue setting games and DLC further and further north, it should only be a matter of time before you get your wish and see some sort of snowy area, either in a main game or DLC.

Personally, I wouldn't mind seeing that, and it would be a nice change of pace... but I hope they wont do that in the next game, because after Skyrim, I think I'll be tired of snow for a while, and I'm sure the devs will be too.

yes, please. although canada would be cool and all(ronto), I think it would be incredibly....boring. did any nukes even fall in Canada? I figured it was the US that took most of the damage, and Canada probably just got hit with the fallout.
