Is that the "dumbing down" brigade or the actual fans? I have a friend who is very into MGS and has been in gaming heaven since he started playing today.

MGS might be some competition for GOTY, but then Bethesda gets hundreds of these things from gaming publications with every game. It'd require something really big to unseat that, and even with the big players this year Bethesda is pushing right back with a even bigger game.

Massive fan backlash?

I'm not saying you're wrong (I personally have problems so far with MGSV) but I've not seen any.I'm on the metal gear forums and people have been fulsome in their feedback of MGS 5.

Aren't goty awards decided by critics anyway?

---

For me personally Fallout 4 may only scraqe into a hypothetical top 5 with great games such as:

TW3, MGS 5, Life is Strange, until dawn, and Pillars of eternity already out.

FO4 is up against one of the best years ever in gaming, with some redoubtable games.Fallout 4 won't have the highest metacritic of the year and it won't win the most goty awards with a substantial lead.

What makes you think it won't have the highest metacritic? Skyrim has 94, to Witcher 3's 92, Pillar's 89, and so far MGSV's 95. That's a pretty close range, and really anything in the 90's on Metacritic means "Completely freaking amazing". I don't see why Fallout 4 would be any different, especially with Fallout 3 scoring 91. alongside Oblivion with 94 and Morrowind with 89.

/MGG/ on 4-chan basically died once they got the game over how god-awful the plot turned out to be.

They burnt through many threads on both /vg/ and /v/, faster then most other big game relases, and it was all negative.

Even some of the most devout fans of Metal Gear were throwing thier arm up becuase they were so butt blasted over how bad MGS5's plot turned out to be.

A 5 point disparity is significant, and FO4 would need to be the best thing Bethesda has ever developed.Bugs alone could stop Fallout 4 getting a 96 metacritic, this is before we consider some of the divisive issues like a voiced PC, the expungement of skills, the new dialogue choices etc.

It's not literally impossible (according to David Hume's empiricism, nothing is), but going off precedent it will probably be somewhere between 90 - 94.While conversely MGS 5 isn't even the highest rated game in the series, a 95 metacritic always looked plausible (expected even).

I don't predicate any of my opinions on these scores (life is strange is currently my goty), but from a critical and equanimous perspective Fallout 4 has an onerous task to beat a 95.

About 300 of the GOTY awards come from critics,

about 100 of the GOTY awards come from 'readers polls' of different sorts.

Whoever gets most is 'consensus GOTY'.

oh, and consensus GOTY is not decided by Metacritic, though that's a useful pointer

That's not a massive fan backlash, especially any hardcoe sect of fans.

That would be like the paucity of 'dinosaurs' on here constituting a massive backlash.Again I personally have problems with MGS V, and there's patent flaws with it as a mgs game but I've seen nothing even tenuously critical towards it.

I'll check on 4-chan...

You do realize what kind of community [censored] is, right? Especially the videogame parts?

They talk about how terrible everything is because I dont think they can fathom a world without hate and negativity towards everything in the universe. Hell, I think most of them do it as some sort of sick joke, trying to one up each other to say the most horrible thing, kinda like that old monty python bit. They really don't represent the active fanbase of a game at all, its like going to RPGCodex to see what the fanbase thinks of Witcher 3.

I'm sure it'll at least do better than New Vegas, which got a 86. And there really isnt a difference once you get into the 90s. Ive yet to see a game rated 90 be objectively worse than a game rated 95. If the game was scoring in the low to mid 80s or even lower I could see your point, but once you get into the 90s it just gets into how Metacritic calculates the totals from whatever very minor things reviewers said they didn't like in their review that was ranked "Positive".

I dunno, Witcher3 and MGSV have been getting 10/10's and GOTY hype all over the place.

It's going to be a tough battle for FO4.

It's not in doubt, an 86 for a BGS developed game would be deemed a 'disaster'.

How do you objectively quantify and compare games at all, regardless of their proximate position on metacritc?

This is like using the RPGCODEX to gauge how good Bethesda games are. By that standards, Fallout4 is already gauranteed to be 0/10.

MGS is loved by every fan or review I see, and is at a solid 95 MetaCritic.

Yes, I spend most of my time there. They are actually really nice and helpful, and far more willing to talk about lore and the series devlopment without the rampamt "BETHESDA RUINED EVERYTHING!" we see here a lot, at least they don't normally say such unless they are meme posting.

And that just meme posting m8.

Gaming is all about personal tastes. All that really matters is if people actually enjoy the game, but Metacritic does give you a good idea of how people who enjoy games for a living enjoyed it. Personally I find it very hard to say that a game is objectively better than one or the other. I'd say that certain elements may be better than others, Dark Messiah still has the best swordplay of any game Ive played, but that does not make it superior to Skyrim or any other game. Im a fan of X3 Terran Conflict, which is sitting at a 73 on Metacritic. And its easy to see why, its probably the least accessible game ive played, but then it provides something unique that I enjoy, and I wouldn't really care to hear about how people say their game is superior because of any reason, including the more numbers on a critic site.

But when you score in the 90s on metacritic, its going to be a game you can atleast count on to provide a good time for the majority of people who are interested in it. When someone says "Open World Third Person Shooter", the metacritic means that The Phantom Pain is a good bet for having fun along those lines, while saying "Open world space sim", X3 Terran Conflict may not be quite what they're looking for, but it still could be what somebody is absolutely looking for.

I will admit Ive never stepped foot into the vidjya parts of that place, but then Ive mostly heard the myths and legends about The Hacker [censored].

Is it truly meme posting when they do that? There's a lot of posts here that are so extreme that they could sound like meme posting, but they are usually completely serious. Its mostly Reddit that I go to and even then I just lurk. Reddit seems to be pretty happy about MGSV so far, I did a quick look at the subreddit and people seem to enjoy it. So I don't think its the entire fanbase that is upset with it.

The status quo and an objective metric are patently dissimilar, and to be fair having the threshold at 90 seems arbitrary. The majority of people could easily like any pertinent game rated 85 or above for example.

Also if we're discussing 'safe bets' (and to get back on topic), it seems a safe bet that Fallout 4 won't exceed a 95 metacritc, though that may be otiose as MGS 4 had a higher metacritic than Fallout 3, yet the latter was the consensus goty.

/b/ is what you probably heard about, or the hacker group anonymous, which isn't 4-chan.

A lot of the time yeah. I mean, you do sometimes get someone who ACTUALLY believes every game is bad or w/e, but they get [censored] on by everyone.

I do go to [censored] myself, just not the vidjya parts. I kinda assumed it'd be like /b/, but I guess im wrong. Also yeah, making that joke there with "The Hacker [censored]" since we all know how well mainstream news media understands the internet.

Also its kinda the same on reddit where those people who scream about dumbing down get downvoted into oblivion. It does a pretty good job of moderating that kind of thing because people tend to stop posting those things when they are at the absolute bottom of the thread.

I just go with 90 since base 10 is nice to human brains with 10 fingers on their hands. I suppose 85 would work to, but I don't really see a universe where Fallout 4 does not have loads of critical acclaim. I dont think its a safe bet that it wouldn't win 96 or more, just that once you pass a certain threshold it comes down to how the positive feedback is calculated instead of any actual quality metric, making a 94 versus a 96 be pretty much nothing.

Are you talking about MGS5 not winning GOTY or FO4 not winning? Cause I'm a little confused here... The former would make sense, the latter makes no sense whatsoever.

Impossible to tell yet. The Witcher 3 is my current favorite, with Bloodborne taking second place. But then I haven't played Metal Gear Solid V yet... This is a good year for games. Too good...

But The Witcher 3 is probably my favorite game ever, so I can't possibly imagine how anything can top it this year :unsure2:

We'll see. But I think F4 has a good chance to be GOTY.

At least it's most likely gonna be my personal GOTY since I have no interest in the triple A games that have come out this year so far. Witcher 3, Mad Max, MGSV, GTA, and the next Deus Ex. Its all about some random dudes which I can't connect with at all, or have some personal dude story which does not interest me. Meh.
