I'm running an i7-2600k with 8GB RAM, AMD Radeon 6870HD, on Windows 8 64bit.
I bought Fallout 3 GOTY from Steam, put it on my other hard disk, and haven't been able to use it once since installing it. The reason it's on the other disk is that I have an SSD as my boot drive. All that happens is, I start Fallout3.exe or use the launcher to press Play, and the screen goes black for a couple seconds, before saying "Fallout3 has stopped working."
What I've tried: -
- INI edits. I've changed it to support multiple cores, to fully use all available threads (Quad Core Hyperthreaded), and I've removed the lines for the intro video. No difference was made.
- D3D9 dlls. I've tried the two I've seen available, and again they made no difference.
- Disabling my second monitor, which made no difference.
- Uninstalling and reinstalling.
- Verifying the integrity of the cache.
- Updating DirectX, for the billionth time, to no effect.
- Updating the Visual C Redist, to no effect.
- Updating GFWL. I struggled with removing the older version (had to use mscuri.exe to get rid of all of it), and that made a difference, by giving out a different error in the Event Viewer.
I used to get an XLive.dll error in Event Viewer, but now I get this, and the crash is now specific to Fallout3.exe.

Let me stress again, I redirected the folder using symlinks, as I needed the space on my SSD. This is unrelated to the issue.
