Fallout4 confirmed reusing Fallout 3 lockpicking and hacking

Post » Sat Nov 28, 2015 6:53 am

First let me say this now, do not link any leaked footage in this thread, this means pics and video links.

Now, as you know if you've seen the gamescom footage, Fallout 4 is completely rehashing FO3's lockpickng and hacking system, they are identical. On top of this they seem to be using FO3 meshes, not sure about textures, as well.

I for one am extremely disappointed by this. Bethesda has a track record of the exact opposite. Why change it now? Why make so much of changes in your E3 presentation, then completely do the opposite?

Anyways, maybe I'm overreacting. What is your opinion on this?

I am not !!!extremly!!! disappointed by this but it would have been nice to see some development (more skill related) there too.

It's been like 3 games with the same lockpicking system at this point I'd welcome back Oblivion's or Morrowind's over this. I don't really find the Hacking annoying.

Personally I couldn't stand Fallout3's artificial 25, 50, 75 lockpicking "tiers." I would love it if Bethesda returned to Morrowind's real-time lockpicking, with an increasing chance of failure as we attempt harder locks with an unskilled player.

Meh. I found the hacking mini-game to be a good representation of hacking a computer without actually needing to know anything about computers. While it would be nice to see something more in-depth, but I can see why that would be a lot worse for many people. Lockpicking is never going to be a game-changing experience. A little more feedback from the system would've been nice, but as mini-game it worked.

Not very surprising, but pretty tiresome.

It's the old argument character against actual player skills. The current system is a middle ground. That's the reason I assume why Bethesda left it as it is.

Yeah, we still have no confirmation that they're reusing any assets from Fallout 3, whatsoever. I have no idea why they would; they never have, and they'd have to redo all of their texture work anyway on account of what the new consoles can do. That, and physical-based rendering, which means that textures handle lighting effects in an almost completely different way compared to the old games.

As for reusing the minigames, it's not like they didn't reuse Fallout 3's lockpicking minigame in Skyrim. And a lot of people at Quakecon or Gamescom seem to be confirming that the minigames happen in real time, which is awesome. For me, both of the minigames are fun and can incorporate character skill pretty well, so I don't mind too much that they're mostly unchanged. I just hope we're not locked out of higher difficulty terminals/locks by what our perk ranks are; and I don't imagine they will. I never felt that Lockpicking or Hacking deserved their own skill next to things like Medicine or Repair, but relegating them to ranked perks and letting us try every terminal/lock seems more appropriate.

That's true ever since they put the heavy reliance on the minigames; it's also true with almost all other skills too since most of everything is firmly in the players own hands and the character skills are left more as a token RPG convention in the marginal.

What I mean is, I think Lockpicking as a skill is out of place in any RPG, honestly. It seems like it shouldn't be on the same list as sneaking, or using a weapon, or negotiating - it's picking locks. There's lots of locks in RPGs, to be sure, but I just feel like skills shouldn't be so specific. Fallout 3 had the same problem with Science and hacking, but New Vegas did a good job "generalizing" the skill into more perks, speech checks, and crafting, I think.

I am okay with lock-picking, not so with hacking.

Morrowind did not have an lockpicking minigame that came with Oblivion.

Elder scrolls online uses Oblvivion system however easier but its timed and real time.

I'm ok with it, the fallout version feel more fitting for fallout than the Oblivion type.

Wonder if they will have tires for lockpicking? they should anyway let perks make opening locks easier. In Skyrim I never put any perks into it.

Reusing the system? Sure. Meshes? Sure. Textures? Eeeeeeehh...

To be fair I'm not surprised. Sure we get a lot of new features, but they are reusing a lot of stuff. Like that terrible running animation (looks at trailer).

Fine with both using the same gameplay mechanic, I'd be disappointed if they drastically changed it TBH

I'd rather they concentrate on the main game than the lockpicking/hacking minigames.

What?!?!?! Pre-order CANCELLED!

How dare they reuse a mechanic from a previous game. This is laziness. No, this is TREASON!!!!

THIS. IS. SPARTA!

I can honestly say that computer havking wasnt always easy for me on the harder terminals. Im fine with that being the same, but I wouldnt have mind something more.

Do we know if lockpicking is tiered still? Or just the same mini game? In skyrim lockpicking is a joke, so if its still tiered atleast the skill has some use. If we can attempt any lock like skyrim than I wont be getting lockpicking as a skill.

I'd like to see that you at least need to have a screwdriver in your inventory (which in a pinch can be wielded like a melee weapon) before you can pick locks.

In FO3 I was always wondering where the magical screwdriver kept coming from.

Also, the 'Explosive Entries' mod should have be incorporated into FO4. That and a set of proper lockpicking tools should be craftable or in some way obtainable as well. Or at least be able to use the melee attack of a rifle to bust open any locks.

Don't care one way or the other on the first part.

And I seriously doubt they're re-using meshes & textures. Art style, yes. Actual assets? Doubt it. (if only because of these new rendering & engine systems people keep mentioning.... I'd think that they'd need re-worked mesh/texture files to fit into that system. But, hey, I'm no programmer.)

I know they're reusing at least some old assets because in the E3 presentation when Todd is showing the crafting they scrap a set of old tires (four of them I think) and then they scrap a wall of tires <- the wall of tires is from the old game, I'm sure of it.

Personally I don't mind too much since there's enough new stuff going on to keep me happy :)

I'm fine with this. I liked hacking and lockpicking well enough and lots of companies reuse textures.

Regarding hacking and lockpicking: Why reinvent the wheel? If Bethesda has something that works fine why should they feel the need to completely redo those mechanics after every Fallout?

Regarding the textures: Now, this I am a bit disappointed in. Granted, the leaked footage is terrible quality, but it doesnt look like the appearance of cars, vending machines, and a few other models have changed much. Dont get me wrong... I know Bethesda needs to keep similar appearances compared to past games, but nothing really jumps out as "newly textured."

waffles - then you need to look at the non leaked footage. The cars and vending machines and everything else are much more detailed. Basing you opinion off pictures of someone's shoulder is a horrible idea. And yes the image kept auto focusing all over the place on shoulders, heads, and every once in a while it focused on the screen.
