FalloutNV Crashes After Intro Movie (STILL)

Post » Wed Sep 01, 2010 11:38 am

So obviously I just got Fallout NV and I am having immediate troubles with it. Both before AND after today's (10/21/2010) patch my Fallout: New Vegas game crashes at the loading screen that immediately follows the introduction. The circle rotates around about once and then it crashes, giving the error message that reads;

"FalloutNV has stopped working"

That's all it says. Whether you watch the introduction or skip through it the same thing happens. I've tried updating my DirectX, I've tried updating my graphics card drivers, I've tried the tutorial fixes such as making it skip the introduction movies automatically, or running it in windowed mode, or downloading the file dx9d9 and placing it in my directory. Nothing works. I've re-installed the game several times, I've re-installed Steam and the game several times. I've tried validating the files (which it says they are all okay) and nothing fixes this probem.

Someone please help me?

My setup for more information:

Windows 7 64-Bit
nVidia GTX 295 (x2)

that should be the only stuff that matters in this situation.

Thanks for any suggestions!

This is apparently a bug with nvidia 200 series cards running win 7 64 bit. Every one i have seen post this issue has had this same set up. Mine worked pre-patch but hasn't since.

I wonder if there's a -nosound command line switch to try and rule out a sound problem?

You'd think if it was a sound problem that the crash would also take place in the introduction video too. My crash is very specific though. After the intro movie is over it brings up the loading screen and the little dot on the wheel will rotate around to the exact same area every time and then CRASH... even though you know it's coming it's still frustrating every time, lol.

It has to be something corresponding to the nVidia 200+ series (going up to 400's too)... seems like all problems like this are happening with these cards..

I wonder how Bethesda has been testing this game ?

It fails on so many PC's that they must have known about the problem for a very long time...

its not just the Nvidas.I have an ATI 5850 and was doing it to me also.I did the dll fix and it works for now.I think its more of a win7 64 thing than nvidia or ATI.

From what i have been seeing on the forums is generally Nvidia has a baad stuttering problem and ATI has the after intro crash. Not saying either or only have that problem just majority on either side.

I have 2 ATI 5970's that are crashing. Plays intro movie just fine, loading screen, and then crash. I've tried in and out of Crossfire mode. Someone really needs to fix this, I had the intro crash on fallout 3 as well and NEVER got to play it because of this. I would have thought that the issue wouldn't have returned in the next game, figuring it was a big problem before, maybe they would make it a priority.

Now its just ridiculous!

I have the newest drivers from ATI, Just got done updating after the crash happened the first time.

I got it to run now, i got the new Nvidia driver V 260.89 and i did a "clean" install, as you install it you can choose for it to remove all old settings and software and that looks like it fixed the problem for me, i now get to start a new game, ill let you know if i get any problems, but for now its working for me.

I got mine working as well using the D3D9.dll fix from here:

http://segmentnext.com/2010/10/19/fallout-new-vegas-errors-crashes-freezes-fixes/

Note, the file needs to go into:

\Steam\steamapps\common\fallout new vegas

Will Try Bent Over's fix as well, although with the Beta 260.89's my 470 wasn't working in anything.

I was in the same boat, till today.

What I did, downloaded second patch and unclicked Cloud on Steam, I then updated my ATI drivers through Steam. Rebooted, and game has been running fine since.

Not sure what worked, out of that.

I tried the "Clean Install" version of downloading my drivers, and then it all went through and my computer restarted, entered my password, then my computer just got stuck at the loading screen and didn't go any farther past that...
