Okay, here's the situation;
Before I begin, let me say this: First of all, I have not installed any mods. Any. Third-party or otherwise. Ever. Have not so much as downloaded a mod folder from the internet. Secondly, I installed this game January 6th or so, and the desktop I installed New Vegas onto has been disconnected from the internet since then, due to a broken wireless card. I prefer to use my laptop for the internet anyway. That having been said, let the rant begin. Buckle yourselves in; it's a biggy. But I've tried to be helpful and flavorful in my exposition. Hope you don't mind sifting through the results of my reckless, pretentious use the English language.

I installed Fallout: New Vegas via Steam, updated it through the same online service, and the program automatically set itself to optimal visual settings. This has not been a problem, as the game has displayed no amount of lag or crashing worth mentioning. Overall, I've been pleased with the game's performance, but as is the case with every game I've played with the Bethesda logo on it, I've inevitably encountered bugs of the minor and major varieties, and now it's to the point that I can no longer enjoy the game, and will not resume until I am confident my game will stop crashing.

THE BIGGEST BUG: FIENDS, FIRE ANTS, AND NEW VEGAS:
The game was operating brilliantly until recently; I took up Cassidy's quest to find out what had happened to her caravan(s). I found the first caravan, and Cassidy pointed me towards the next destination; a similar caravan that met a similar fate(?). Before heading in that direction, I ventured towards a nearby, ruined barn; enemies had registered on my compass in that direction. This is when the fatal bugs appeared. The enemies turned out to be giant fire ant soldiers. No big deal. Engaging the hostile ants with ranged sneak attacks was as rewarding as usual, but when the ants registered my attack and began moving to respond, the game crashed. I reloaded, returned to the barn, and killed the ants so swiftly as to prevent them from enacting their "retaliation code", as I'll call it. This prevented my game from crashing(?). I then entered the ant mound, where I killed a few more workers (without crashes) before stumbling upon the Ant Queen and her soldier bodyguard. I quick-saved, pulled out my newly-acquired  sniper rifle and attacked the queen first. The game registered my attacks on the queen, but as soon as the queen and her guard began to respond, the game crashed again. This happened every time I reloaded the entire game, without fail. I reloaded the game no less than ten times. Frustrated, I left the queen, her guard, the mound, and the entire barn area, labeling the region as a "dead zone" in my mind, in that going there and interacting with the entities there would eventually, assuredly crash my game. I ventured north of Cassidy's ruined caravan, where I encountered the NCR battling Fiend gangers. I quick-saved, engaged the gangers, and my game crashed. I reloaded and attacked the gangers with sneak attack sniper shots, removing any chance of recognition or retaliation by the gangers, and my game did not crash, again suggesting to me that the commands determining various NPCs' conduct towards the PC (such as the "attack code") is corrupt. There was a second, smaller group of gangers just west of the first NCR/Fiend dispute point, so I crept over there and sneak-attack'd the Fiends battling the lone trooper. The game crashed. I reloaded and tried again to similar results. On the third or fourth reloading of the entire game, I abandoned the fight entirely, leaving the NCR soldier to his fate. The game still crashed. It seems many of the areas surrounding New Vegas itself, as well as its inhabitants, are having terrible effects on my game, and the best way to avoid these crashes is to steer clear of these "dead zones" entirely. Fed up with the game-killing problems that appeared to be plaguing the entire north-western quarter of the world, I tried to circle around New Vegas, rather than making a "bee-line" through the dead zones to the south, south-west, west, and north-west of New Vegas (weird, because I had no problems just a day or two before, and had completed a few quests in and around New Vegas- but hadn't done "Ring-a-Ding" yet). The dead zones I encountered were areas I encountered for the first time, in that I received experience for finding these locations- prior to the game crashing and sending me back to my last save point. These locations are all near the Robco robot plant and New Vegas/NCR Headquarters.
...Anyway...
I encountered a couple Jackal Gangers, attacked, and crashed. I reloaded, sneak-sniped them out of a chance at response, saved after looting their hideout, began continuing north (I had passed the south-eastern portion of New Vegas' walls, and was near the NCR share-cropping area), and the game crashed. That was when I stopped playing.

I find it strange that the game should only now start crashing so frequently and "reliably", given that I have explored much of the southern region of the Mojave Desert- most of the entire southern half (I think), have met with many NPCs, have taken a total of 3 NPCs into my party (Boone, who I dismissed- I presume he's back at Novac; ED-E, whose personal quest that begins at the scrapyard near Novac is also having troubles, and Cassidy, who got me started down this path to software hell in the first place, damn her cold, whiskey-soaked heart.), and have completed many quests. The whole time, crashes and lag were so scarce and intermittent that I didn't mind, and the video and audio was very impressive. If anything, I feel like my machine could render objects at an even greater distance, but I've pushed the game's visual quality as far as it will go (I think).

SMALLER BUGS: "ED-E, MY LOVE", PRIMM'S SHERIFF, RANDOM CRASHES, ITEM ISSUES
- The quest "ED-E, My Love" takes you to the junkyard just north of Novac (where you must also go to complete the quest "Come Fly With Me"). The quest arrow points directly to the old woman who lives there with her many dogs, but she will not acknowledge ED-E, nor my quest. I don't care that much, as ED-E is little more than a self-propelled backpack with a laser defense system to me. But I thought it'd be worth mentioning
- I sought to acquire a certain ex-sheriff from the Powder Gangers' prison/hideout, so that he could fill the role of Primm's new sheriff. I sought to infiltrate the compound by wearing Powder Ganger clothing I had taken off of some dead gangers- but was shot on sight. Is this because I'd already been vilified by them, prior to showing up, or was it something else? Instead, I sneak'd up to the top of a nearby hill and sneak-sniped every Powder Ganger I could see. I then ventured into the compound. After dispatching the interior's occupants, I spoke with the ex-sheriff, who had sat unflinching as I killed his fellow inmates around him. He agreed to become the new sheriff, and then left the compound, but I never saw him again during the quest. I confess, I may have forgotten to follow the quest arrow to the man, spoken with him in Primm, and completed the quest, but I was annoyed that the damn stupid bastard hadn't taken some initiative and just declared himself sheriff when he showed up- what was he looking for, my blessing!? So I just hotwired the local security bot and made it the new sheriff. Now I can't find that sheriff, though I'm sure I just haven't looked hard enough. I had been hoping to get him to recognize that the special gun he had been set to guard had been stolen, but that can wait.
On a side note, I later found the ex-sheriff warming himself in front of a hobo fire at Primm, with now-ex-deputy Beagle. I wish I could have made them both the authority figures in Primm, but the quest is botched beyond repair, so fuggit. Enjoy your crappy, 200-year-old sheriff, Primm. I'd tell him his gun's been stolen, but I guess he's somewhere out in the desert; lack of hibernation mode, batteries, and oil subjecting the robo-cop's digital psyche to some kind of A.I. spirit journey, in which he will abandon his old, black-and-white law programming for a more enlightened, humane sense of the law. It's what I like to think. Screw Primm.
- Finally, random crashes and item problems; I have no description for the crashes, other than they seem to be entirely at random, in terms of location and catalyst. I'm okay with this, as the crashes are fairly infrequent, relative to the "dead zones" around New Vegas, and I can't provide much knowledge to begin with, other than the knowledge that they exist, which blows. If the problems actually pertain to NPC commands regarding me (the PC), then I'm screwed.
As for items, I've noticed that similar items in similar states of repair (usually perfect) "stack", which I don't enjoy, as the "stacking program" won't recognize modified weapons (I think), and I've sometimes lost track of my preferred weapons or have sold said preferred weapons when clicking on a stack of weapons I intended to sell, accidentally selling them with the rest of the weapons. This stacking issue also occurred when I took Boone's beret, while wearing an identical beret. Boon immediately requested that I return his beret in a very ominous tone of voice (his only tone of voice, from what I gather of his transparent, 2-D personality), and I scrambled to comply- only to find that his beret had apparently disappeared! Out of desperation, I removed my own beret and gave it to Boone, which seemed to satisfy him. I looked into my armor inventory to find a new hat for myself- and found a beret. This one was the same as the one I had worn, and was likely the beret Boone had been wearing, only there was a " (2)" at the end of the hat's "name". I'm still wearing it, and it still has the stupid " (2)" indicator on it, regardless of the fact that it is the only hat in my inventory, let alone the fact that it is the only beret in my inventory.
- Here's my last complaint; What makes a laser rifle so effin' different from a tri-beam laser rifle that I can't outfit the tri-beam with a laser rifle scope- even though a laser rifle can be outfitted to emit a tri-beam burst? Why can't I outfit the rocket launcher named "Annabelle" with the rocket launcher guidance system? It's the same durned thing, only with a Name! Weapons with Names are the bee's knees, to be sure, but their inability to be modded or repaired easily makes them so unappealing that I've sold a good many of them out of sheer exasperation. I wouldn't call this a bug, but it sure is annoying. What the hell kind of gun do I use in repairing "That Gun"!? I love "That Gun", but the sodding mo-fo refuses to be modded or repaired by anything I've found on God's blackened earth!

Okay. So there's my submission. I registered a profile on this site with the sole purpose of submitting this complaint (and it's a doozy, boy-howdy). I did the DXDIAG or whatever and copy-pasted my computer's specs into the spoiler section. I have honestly and thoroughly enjoyed playing this game, and have logged an unhealthy number of hours on it. The hell of it all is that I knew this would happen. I didn't want it to happen, and had begun to believe it wouldn't happen, but Bethesda's promise to supply all of its games with enjoyment-killing bugs, both very big and very small, has held strong since Oblivion, and perhaps since Morrowind. I get the sinking feeling that I will either receive no reply, or that my reply will be something along the lines of "you're doing it wrong", and I will then be given a detailed step-by-step process that will allow me to tweak my game's and machine's performance to circumvent the problems I am experiencing.

Uh oh. I just loaded my latest quicksave and the game immediately crashed. About one frame in. I'm still thinking it's hostile NPCs. And get this:
When I clicked on the details of my error report, this file showed up: C:\DOCUME~1\GARRET~1\Locals\Temp\829d-appcompat.txt

Could it be that somebody, late one night, after one too many Nuka-Colas, typed "appcompat" instead of "appcombat"? My guess highlights the fact that I am far from technologically inclined, and I confess that I have nothing approaching the skills needed to make such a game as New Vegas. It also highlights that my name is "Garret". Hi! :D
Bugs aside, the product is great. But its own flaws are preventing me from enjoying the game itself! I sure as hell didn't type "appcompat!", and for all I know it's supposed to be spelled "appcompat", and I merely forgot to enact the customary ritual of dragging a dead chicken over the Bethesda disc box prior to opening it! If this is the case, will the spirits leave if I drag a dead chicken over the top of my keyboard, or are the spirits now so deeply ingrained in my PC that I should just carry the entire machine outside, destroy it, and then bury it at the bottom of a deep, narrow pit, with ground-up jade and silver mixed into the soil?

Sincerely Desperate,

Wazzelbe

Don't blame Bethesda, blame Obisidan. They're the folks who created and tested it. Better hope that their timeline (and quality) of patches are better than Bethesda.

As for others...

ED-E my love: She's not going to care about ED-E. Ever. She just mentions a keyword in Dialouge and ED-E does something. That's what's SUPPOSED to happen.
Powder Gangers: Guards of a faction know if you are or are not wearing a disguise, and will act according to your fame/infamy with them. With Powder-Gangers, anyone named (except the Sheriff) will shoot you on sight. Also, you need to head to the Mojave Outpost and broker a pardon for Mr. Sherriff-wannabe before he can become sherriff of Primm. This is supposed to happen.
Named weapons- Named weapons are unique and cannot be upgraded, this includes "That Gun." If you want to repair "That Gun" get someone else to do it, or use a Weapon Repair kit. Also, modded weapons should have a + next to their name, if this isn't happening, then it's a bug.

Thanks! I admit I'm not acquainted with the responsibilities of Bethesda and Obsidian, respectively.
As for named guns. Dang. That's too bad. I really would have liked to upgraded That Gun with a scope and longer clip. Ah well

Thanks for the response. Any suggestion with my crashes? I still blame the "appcompat" file.

One more thing:

I reloaded a save just before my quick save; the game functioned just fine- until I shot a Jackal Ganger in the head. Then, as soon as my stealth indicator went from [HIDDEN] to [CAUTION], the game crashed. This time, it was the file: "C:\DOCUME~1\GARRET~1\LOCALS~1\Temp\4bf6_appcompat.txt" which differs from the 829d_appcompat.txt" file.

I thought that buy changing the "appcompat" file, I'd fix the problem, but after seeing this slightly different file, I'm content to wait for tech support. I've sent a message to Bethesda, but I don't expect a reply soon. Does anybody have an idea as to how I could fix this problem quickly?

Last I knew, the appcompat.txt is a file created by windows and is meant to contain information that is sent to MS to tell them what the error is about - in other words, it's just a report file, it isn't the cause. The reason why the number changes is because it's a new report file for every error/crash that prompts the system to want to make a report, so the system gives it a new ID number, just like a camera creates a new numbered file for every photo you take....or something like that.

I do not know the reason for your sudden crashes, but I think your CPU is a little below the supposed minimum requirements (2.0ghz). I wouldn't think that would make a big difference since you say can run it all fine and stuff, but (and I'm no techie here, just a thought) could it be possible that in some areas/situations, the CPU is being over-worked by something (too many things/effects/scripts I-don't-know?) and thus crashes? For instance I've seen some posts where people have lag or other strange burps because of the energy weapon effects that the Fiends use.

You did not list things you've already tried to do to solve your problem, you only describe when the crashes occurred. Did you actually try turning all those marvelously optimal game settings down to see if that helped at all? Did you try reinstalling the game (you won't lose your saves/can back them up if you want etc)? For testing purposes, did you try creating a new character, running straight to those areas that give you crashes as fast as possible (ignore most of the quests/sneak there etc, shouldn't take more than an hour or so), and see if the crashes still reliably occur (eg, perhaps your saves became corrupted for some reason)?

I think turning down the visual settings could be a really simple, effective tool for getting to the bottom of it. I'll have to try that out and get back to you. However, I find myself doubting this approach. My reasons are as follows:

- Why is this happening now? And with enemies I've fought before? I guess the problem could develop over time and extensive use (I've been playing a lot), and like you said, I guess the CPU could be under-performing, but it says it's running at "900 @ 2.2G", which I think is good.
- There's no problem rendering; like I said before, there's no lag, and I feel like difficulty doing so would be indicated by lag. As it stands, I can walk through Novac- I just can't start a fight in Novac. This is why I'm convinced that it's a software issue, but I still don't see how this kind of problem could occur eventually, rather than be a problem when I engage the first enemy.

So, with what you've told me, I'll toy around with the settings and see if I can fight enemies again that way, because I could totally lower the settings if it would let me run the game again.
I guess at this point, I'd just ask if there's a way to copy the save file, so I could simply un-install and then reinstall the game. If the problem persisted, I could conclude that it was a hardware problem- or could a corrupted save file corrupt a reinstalled game?

P.S.
Deleting my save file would svck, as I just hit level 20 and haven't even entered New Vegas yet. I would prefer to make that a last resort, after re-installation.

Yeah, like I said, I kinda doubt the CPU "power" by itself is the problem, since you were having no issues running it until recently, but one never knows how these machines can quirk up regarding running programs. :) It was just a thought and something to try/test. If it changes nothing, at the least you can eliminate lower game settings as a solution (you know game tech-support may suggest it, too, lol)

Your save games should be in the My Documents folder, like many games these days. If you uninstall the game, by default they aren't deleted. You can, if you wish, copy them to a different directory on your hard disc and then copy them back after a reinstall, if you want to be safe.

A corrupted save game can still be corrupted even if you reinstall the game. It depends on how and why the file is corrupted....and of course, whether it's truly corrupted in the first place (vs. some kind of hardware/software issue).

Creating a new character does not overwrite save games or the quicksave, but it will overwrite the auto-save.

My first game (before all the patches) my 1st character began to crash a lot about 30 hours into the game. I started a new character and haven't had that kind of constant CTD since...and since the patches, for me, it's even more stable. But I think this game early on had multiple savegame issues (and still does for some people). So if you do try a new character or get the current to work again, my advice is to make NEW, manual saves on a frequent basis and do not over-write them. I tend to make one every 30 minutes or so, because the early experience I had made me paranoid, hahaha. Don't rely only on the quicksave or auto-save. In fact for myself, I turned all auto-saves off because I think they actually caused crashes on my system. Maybe it's better now, haven't tried turning them back on since the patches. I also periodically delete the quicksave to let the game make a new one (vs. over-writing it constantly).

I like it. It couldn't hurt. I could save my games the way you suggest; with multiple manual saves and an occasionally-wiped autosave and quicksave. If I encounter the same problems, well, hell, if it's at New Reno again, it could be over week. The proper patch could be out by then. 'Kay. I'ma restart. I'll check back on this forum thing later, but thanks for the idea. We'll see if anyone else has encountered this before, or knows what it is beyond a doubt.

In the meantime, thanks for the input, LadyCrimson. I'ma start a wise-cracking lasergun dude. Later.

I should probably mention that the game also can have seeming issues with having too many save files in the save directory. It'll vary for people, but 200-300 is kind of a general marker. If you actually reach that many manual saves, it's a good idea to copy them all to another folder while leaving just a few of the most recent ones in the save directory for the game to access. If you leave those few, new saves you make will continue the numbering sequence. (edit) I tend to copy/empty all saves of one chr. before starting a new chr, and when I want to play each chr. I switch their saves in and out, that sort of thing)

And yeah...there used to be a lot more high-tech sorts around here, but like with all games, over time most disappear/move on to other games or whatever. Hopefully someone will have other ideas. Good luck!

Been playing a new game for a while now, and you seem to be right, so far. I'll keep the saves in mind, but I usually delete all my saves and start stocking up after 10 or so. I'll let you know if I get started on "Heartaches By the Number" and get stonewalled by "deadzones" again, but I think your save idea might have saved me. Do you suppose they'll make a patch to fix up this idea? I kinda enjoyed being able to mash "f5" when I was about to get into combat. Thanks again, LadyCrimson.

as I see many of you think that a limited amount of saves will keep the game runnig ok...maybe you are right ...but I am not so sure...If I remember well the engine used is :"Object-Oriented Design, Plug-in Architecture, Save/Load System:
? A well-architected C++ API
? Fast Load Times. Support for background loading allows smooth loading of files during gameplay with no apparent load times and Small Memory Footprint. " so that will be no problems with the saves...then what can be...an over used hardcoded dusty engine that keep sending to your video card processor tons of bugs...why is that...let me explain : the number of polygons rendered for each object is huge so may turn down a very powerful system plus that all the texture base is volumetric and also there is another type of stuttering which can occur, often referred to as micro-stuttering, juddering or skipping. It usually appears as tiny skips, like missing frames in a movie. This is not the same as the normal type of stuttering mentioned above, it is not caused by loading new data, it appears to be an actual bug related to graphics synchronization in the Gamebryo engine, possibly made more noticeable by certain graphics drivers. To confirm the problem, use the iFPSClamp=60 setting as covered in the Advanced Tweaking section - if that removes the skipping then you are experiencing this issue. It's an issue that's been present in the Gamebryo engine at least since Oblivion so it is not new, and so far there is no real solution. So...whats to say...I looked at the engine in another games like warhammer online or civ 4 and....they were lo0ooking and working better...I just think now that maybe bugs gome from somewhere else4...could be bcs of some programming or could be only bcs fallout new vegas was rushed to be put on sale ...!?!
