I've always found it slightly irritating that the only time you can see perk requirements is every other level up (at least if like me you've mislaid the game manual :blush2:), as without that information good character planning can be rather tricky. And then it hit me: wouldn't it be a good idea to have an in-game encyclopedia, like the Civilopedia you get in the Civ games. It'd have stuff like perks and their requirements, game mechanics, weapon stats, enemy stats, that sort of thing. And maybe lore stuff as well, histories, timelines, etc. and so on.

Isn't that a good idea? RPG manuals are much less informative than they were two decades or so ago, stuff that used to be in the manual is now only found in the Prima guide or on the wiki. I think this is a shame, but accept that the days of telephone-directory sized manuals aren't coming back. But wouldn't it be nice to have this information available in-game, where you need it most? I think so.

Well, it's not in-game, but it is basically everything else that you asked for.

What's funny is that Fallout 1 and 2's manuals were around 150 pages each. Monster manuals.

Thanks, I do already know about the wiki though (hence my mentioning it). I'd like this information (not quest walkthroughs, but game mechanics etc.) available in-game though, I think it would be incredibly useful.

It's a shame my Fallout Trilogy pack couldn't even manage a pamphlet. I like a manual I can study.

you just dont get that anymore from developers. they want extra $$$ from the Strategy guides.

Used to be you could actualy tell how mutch a game was realy worth just by picking up the box, a heavy box ment it had a manual that was big and chunky, meaning there was a lot to the game.

I really liked the intro to Fallout 2's manual. The Vault Dweller's memoirs were awesome. Oh and at the back of Fallout 1 and Fallout 2's manuals there's wasteland themed cooking recipes. (Appendix 6).

You just don't get that kind of love put into a videogame nowadays.

My method is to use my phone's web browser to reference the wiki when I need to. If you don't have a phone with quick web access it can be tedious to look everything up on the computer when you need it.

Don't be ridiculous, games don't come with manuals anymore. User interfaces are simplified to the point that reasonably skilled gazelles can figure them out. And anything you need to know about the game's mechanics will be available on forums and wikis. Why go through the cost and trouble of making a game manual when the users are demonstrably eager to help eachother figure out your product?

(Which is sad, because I have a whole chunk of my bookshelf that is just game manuals from back when such a thing actually existed. Some are quite wonderful.)

The gaming industry is a sad world now...

I can only pray that Deus Ex Human Revolution changes it back.

Well supposing you're on the PC and running NV through Steam you can press shift+tab ingame to open the steam overlay. This overlay provides a web browser which in turn can be used to visit the wiki. The advantage over using alt+tab is that he overlay never (at least for me) crashes the game.
That being said, I too miss the days of big manuals. Though as I write this I realize that nowadays patches are way more frequent and manuals would often become outdated very quickly.

I never knew that! That's just the sort of thing Nathan's talking about.

It could be stored on the ED-E, not immediately available so it's really appreciated when it is. No spoilers or walk through, just info on how to to this that and the other. Frinstance, look at a plant or bit of debris and it tells you what it can be used for and therefore whether it's worth collecting.

If you have a printer you can print the pdf's out.
But yeah, I know what you mean...I find the lack of manual trend or lack of reference info in a game etc. annoying for stuff like this. My "solution", which wasn't a great one, was to take screenshots of every Perk screen and then I just referred to those when considering a chr. build when not playing.

But I also have 2 pc's so I can stay in-game and refer to things/internet on the other pc if desired. Not why I have 2 pc's, but it's a useful benefit.

I built a gamer PC last year and went kind of crazy, (spent 2800 usd) and kept my previous over built gamer PC intact. So i have both PCs sitting on a desk next to each other so i have the game running on the new PC and the info site on the older PC, works awesome. And yes it is the vailt that is up, if i am on FONV the vault is up.
