Famous Voice actors!

Post » Mon Jan 04, 2010 10:17 am

Its a simple question do you want Leonardo DiCaprio to do voice over for Skyrim and get payed a 6 figure number, or would you rather see that money go for actual voice actors that will voice over EVERY SINGLE LINE for the same amount of greens.

if yes then you should be shot, or strapped to a chair and forced to listen to all the oblivion NPCs talking at once.

if you say no then you are my friend :hugs:

No. Too expensive. Also, actors don't necessarily make good voice actors. The VA has to convey emotion only with his/her voice; actors can just use their facial expressions and body language to inject emotion into their part; when placed in a VAing role, their dialog may fall flat.

I don't care who the voice actors are as long as they are good, and there is a huge amount of different actors.

I thought Boromir played Martin Septim very well.

I could feel the anxious anticipation, and the probable failure in his voice, throughout Oblivion, but also the calm, steady tone of a born Septim- ahem, Leader.

Good actors are good actors, famous or not. You already know Skyrim is going to feature celebrities from the teaser trailer. If Bethesda has the money, I say go for it. It will bring in more money.

If there's a fixed answer and deride anyone who disagrees, then why even bother asking a question for people's opinion?
I'd rather BGS focus on the game first and if they then have budget left over for famous people voice acting, then maybe.

Preferably no. Wouldn't want a massive chunk of the budget spent on one or two Hollywood actors (i.e. Patrick Stewart) for a few line. Should ensure that each race have their own voices (male and female), preferable each race will have several voices to add more variety.

I don't know, Alec Baldwin is on so many shows nowadays. Probably would do it cheap.

No. Too costly and they wouldn't necessary be good. I would prefer if they hire less famous but very talented voice actors instead.

I can't see the benefit, unless the actor themselves came to Bethesda and requested then maybe, but forking out the money for someone who might not even be half decent is just a bad idea, the money could be put to better use imo

No. My friend who's no one famous can impersonate voices of several famous persons and he'd record everything for couple of bucks and some peanuts, while those famous persons would take enormous amount of money for a few lines.

My best suggestion is - go to nearest acting academy or college and open an audition. Students always need money and there must be several good talented ones among them. And (or) publish ad in some newspapers. :)

Everyone will be happier I think.

Indeed. I would rather see Bethesda spend that money on group of good voice actors then on one famous voice actor who will voice only one character leaving every other NPC in the game to sound exactly alike.

Depends. I wouldn't want them to pay a fortune for Leonardo DiCaprio, because I wouldn't be able to tell the difference. Kiefer Sutherland and Sean Bean are a different matter. Unique voices.

The sales of Skyrim would more than make up for contractng famous actors.

The cost wouldn't even register.

Although it costs more to pay big-name actors as voice actors...

I would love to hear a voice in-game and go "hey, I have heard that voice before"

Unfortunately we seem to be in a minority of two.

I was recommended Vampire: The Masquerade, Bloodlines by the good people of this forum. Sure, it's a good game, but I just can't stomach the over-done voice acting. I just want to play the damn game. One thing I can't stomach in a game is waiting for an NPC to do something. At least with text dialogue you're forced to engage in it, rather than sit back and twiddle your thumbs while you wait on someone reciting their lines.

VtMB was better than Oblivion in this regard in that they just had a [censored] load of voice-acted substantial dialogue, so I can read the text and skip the voice acting which is just irritating background noise. Oblivion seemed to want to economise, so I just had to read through some abnormally short conversations.

Since it's as good as guaranteed that Skyrim will have voice acting, I'd settle for being able to mute voice-acted dialogue and just read the subtitles and skip on to the next part when I'm done. Just make sure the dialogue is substantial and interesting.

Yes, but if I hear captain picard's voice, I don't think Emperor Uriel Septim, I think startrek enterprise. It ruins the game when you hear a familiar famous voice. I liked the Emperor in Daggerfall the best because no one know who he was and he wasn't famous. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=niU1bRqxrIU&feature=related the intro video. Notice that Chancellor Ocato doesn't have pointed ears and isn't golden skinned like what a High Elf should look like? haha

Bah, I don't get the whole 'OMFG IT HAS CELEBRITIES IN IT! IM BUYING IT LOLZ!!!!' thing. I hate celebrities, and I don't know who most of them are. Definitely go for cheaper voice actors, for a few main reasons:

- It can discover new talent
- Voices won't be familiar
- Can have more actors: instead of having one famous actor for all male Nords, have maybe 6 actors for male Nords - do it the same for other races and other genders. It would also make it much easier and less immersion-breaking for mods to have voiceovers, because there wouldn't be lots of male Nords with the exact same voice then some random, mod-added male Nord being the only one with a different voice.
