Wholeheartedly agreed.
Unfortunately we seem to be in a minority of two.
I was recommended Vampire: The Masquerade, Bloodlines by the good people of this forum. Sure, it's a good game, but I just can't stomach the over-done voice acting. I just want to
play the damn game. One thing I can't stomach in a game is
waiting for an NPC to do something. At least with text dialogue you're forced to engage in it, rather than sit back and twiddle your thumbs while you wait on someone reciting their lines.
VtMB was better than Oblivion in this regard in that they just had a [censored] load of voice-acted substantial dialogue, so I can read the text and skip the voice acting which is just irritating background noise. Oblivion seemed to want to economise, so I just had to read through some abnormally short conversations.
Since it's as good as guaranteed that Skyrim will have voice acting, I'd settle for being able to mute voice-acted dialogue and just read the subtitles and skip on to the next part when I'm done. Just make sure the dialogue is substantial and interesting.
