Fan Made Map

Post » Sat Feb 19, 2011 9:08 am

So I've made this map for a friend for Christmas and I wanted to get some feedback on it. Basically I've taken map shapes from other maps and copied over texture and such to give a more realistic touch.

I was debating adding capital cities in. I don't want it to be too busy but I think he'd enjoy having some of that on there. Also if I've missed any major landmarks -- seas, names of islands, etc please point me in the right direction.

If there's something off with shading -- i.e., there should be snow in certain places, mountains in certain places, etc. Please tell me.

If you don't like it, no flames please. I'm looking for positive feedback only because I have to print this very soon.

Thanks all!

I love cartography, always have. Your friend is very lucky, as a gift like this is something that I would adore. Even with the many different Morrowind and Tamriel maps there are that came with the games, I still love seeing some done this way, extruded digitially. Very well done!

As a collector of fantasy and historical maps for well over 20 years, I would love something like this myself.

Again, your friend is quite lucky.

Very fine map, really, if Bethesda made IG maps that you could pick up and read in differing qualities then this would surely be one of the highest quality ones!
I know that these islands may be a bit too small for your map, but MAYBE putting in the Island of http://http://www.uesp.net/wiki/File:DF-Map-Iliac_Bay.jpg and the Isle of Balfiera (check the former link) in there at High Rock. The link is just to show where they are and that they are. ;)

Very nice map anyways! Looks so... alive...

Cyrodiil is missing an I :P Cyrodiil is the province, Cyrodil is a citizen of the province. Elsweyr, Eltheric and Abecean are missing an E. The proportions of the provinces are also off - here is the http://www.imperial-library.info/sites/default/files/gallery_files/races_fullmap_center.gif for comparison.

Purely aesthetically, it looks great :) I'd skip the cities, since its more of a geological map.

Just one thing, its spelt 'Elsweyr' not 'Elswyr' as you spelt it there.

EDIT: Ninja'd

Would you be able to upload this as a modders resource when you're done with it? I'd love to use it in Pelagiad expanded as a misc item.

Depends. Argonia is more of a Argonian name, I believe. Black Marsh is more of a Imperial name. Or maybe vice-versa... Not sure.

Thanks so much for the input everyone! I really appreciate it.

I've changed the spelling (thanks for the heads up! I'm a terrible speller) and I've resized some of the provinces based on the other map. It's not "exact" but it's definitely a lot closer.

I decided against doing the smaller islands because I think it would have made the space cramped -- it was the same reason I decided not to title Iliac Bay. But thank you for the suggestion.

I ended up changing Argonia to Black Marsh, though I did debate back and forth for a while. I saw one map that said Black Marsh (Argonia) and I debated doing that but felt it was too much. UESP wiki said Argonia was more of an elf thing so I decided to trust them for better or worse and go with Black Marsh.

I added a Title and did a tad bit more cleaning up. The finished version is here: http://violentcolorroses.deviantart.com/art/Map-of-Tamriel-189013904

Thanks again!

Just noticed another misspelling: Vvardenfell has two Ls at the end.

Also, did you ask Zephyr or one of the TR admins for permission to use the Hammerfell map? Its not very nice to use other's work without permission or attribution.

Uhm, I don't really know. hehe But I hope someone else on here will take the time to convert the image to dds or tga format, if that's alright with you.

Wow. Okay. As I said, what I did was find outlines -- one of the tan colored maps that didn't have a lot of stuff on it and fill in with some copied texture (from topographical maps and other Tamriel maps) and some painted texture (hand done on Photoshop). I used two maps very heavily for this that I found online on Google images and one was a Hammerfell Map and one was a Cyrodiil map -- I assume this is the map you refer to. But I didn't cut copy and paste exact maps to this one. And in fact the shapes are off from the maps online because the shape of the outline doesn't match the shape of the texture map exactly.

But if you feel that I have based this too heavily for people to tell the difference (and I can see where that could give the impression having pulled up the images side by side -- mine looks like a blocky painted version of that map) and that you consider this plagiarism I can pull it down. After all this wasn't something I was really planning on posting to the internet to be something for everyone, it's a Christmas gift that is for my friend. I just wanted feedback which I have received so I can be done and on my way.

It's not very nice to accuse people of plagiarism. But I'm not looking for a controversy.

Lady Nerevar never accused you of plagiarism. She simply asked if you got permission to use someone elses work - which she thought you did. My suggestion would be, if you can't track down the original authors of the maps you used as a guide, just give the websites you used on your deviantart page, I don't know if it'll show up on Google searches and such, but give credit - better to be safe than sorry.

What I did was look at your map, and noticed that it looked a whole lot like http://www.imperial-library.info/content/maps-created-zephyr. Since that map is 100% fan made and features many very specific things not found in other maps, I assumed that you had simply rescaled it in your version. Its hard to tell anything at the size you've posted, so I thought I'd make sure. If you repainted it by hand, I'm sorry for my accusations.
