FanficRP Pet Peeves

Post » Wed Oct 24, 2012 8:23 am

There is a large community of roleplayers and fanfic writers out there on the internet, not limited to this forum alone. In such a large space, there will always be things that -while not necessarily 'bad'- rub some people the wrong way. So I was curious and wanted to know, what are some of your Fanfic/RP pet peeves?

Please, PLEASE no naming of specific writers or stories, at least from this forum. I don't want this to become a giant bashing thread.

Good Example: "It kinda tweaks me when a character is wearing a red shirt, because I instantly feel like they're supposed to die."

Bad Example: "Red shirts are stupid and (writer) always uses them in their stories and its dumb."

My main pet peeve is when Asap...oh wait. :P

Actually, I could list loads. One off the top of my head:

I often find it quite disheartening when a character comes in who, although not written by a God Monger, is a carbon copy of a Skyrim or Oblivion (or even Morrowind) main character. That is, someone strolling in with every type of enchanted everything, and a huge wealth of experience in the companions the dark brotherhood, etc... While I realise that often starting off RPing can be intimidating, and people do like to explore the characters they play in the games, almost without exception these are the least interesting characters for other people to have to read about, and end up defined very much by the things they did in the game (that the rest of us did anyway). You can't outright ban people from doing this (oh but I would if I could :P), its more something that I always find depressing, whenever I see. Interesting, nuanced characters, if they are based on main characters people have played in the TES games, are generally an abstraction of one particular aspect of that character or race. A good example (that I'm grabbing off the top of my head, and may be wrong), would be Gorbad's Orcan Smith. I have no idea if Gorbad ever played this character in Skyrim (as its his username I suspect he might've :P) but he brilliantly explored what it meant to be an Orc smith, literally what it meant to have a Smithing stat of so-and-so, without also writing about someone who was a Companion, Werewolf, Thieves Guild member, and so on.

There we go, I named two specific people. Woo for breaking the rules!

People who use bad grammar or often skip words/have terrible spelling
edit: people who leave without telling us, which often ruins RP's

Maybe when I get more freetime

You may wish to consider joining Eyes of the Night though, I think you'd have fun there.

RP GM Tyrants. Out of all things nothing ruins an RP more than a bad RP manager.

Another would be over powered characters... Insanely over powered. They are very... Bland. I love seing characters struggle greatly in various skills (combat, horse riding, common sense, etc.) and when you make a character with no down sides it takes away that aspect of struggle that (IMO) makes reading a character's post enjoyable. Oh yes, and being blessed by the gods is also a no-no in my book, that's just arrogant.
