Far away dragons

Post » Wed Feb 03, 2010 2:44 pm

I always play an archer, and personally, regardless of whatever I'm doing or what level I am! The moment I see a dragon far away - I'll be saving my game and then shooting an arrow at it. (How about you?)

But how far can we shoot, exactly? I've heard that in Skyrim stuff can be seen or go farther, so how far will the arrow actually fly?

They went pretty far in Oblivion aswell, I guess you can hit them with a lot of skill. It ain't going to be easy.

I'm sure you can, but I'd suspect they'd be pretty p***ed off about it lol

Hmm, that leads me to an interesting question.... are dragons going to have LOD models for distance viewing? And/or, will they be marked as important things that appear regardless of your distance settings?

(Being on a crappy system, I've had the view distances for things in OB/FO3/etc set pretty low. It's fine having a Raider or a Super Mutant appear suddenly. But I'd hope to get a bit more warning of dragons. :D)

Im pretty sure i read somewhere that when they encounted a dragon they took it out of the sky(or made it land) with arrows.
So i think you will be fine.

They may even be dragons that just circle you while fireballing the area from the sky.
So you will after use arrows or ranged spells to bring it down.

I'm thinking I'll be using a lot of alchemy when an archer. Poisoned arrows may not quickly kill the brutes but they should knock its health down a bit while you get to either a hiding place or a better location to shoot some more. Traps would certainly not be amiss as well, me thinks. Ice to slow its movements, fire to drain its health, and whatever shock does.

You may be able to shoot them with magic. In previous games, when magic was cast on target it flew until it hit something.

it could be advantagous to attack from as far as possible so to get more shots in. I for one will be trying shooting a bunch upward to fall down on the dragon if they are mostly stationary when fighting.

I was able to hit enemies outside the detect life radius of the gray cowl. Longer would be possible but hard as the target become so small and you had to aim high.
Spell travel in a straight line so you can hit targets even longer away.

Long range sneak attack with poison would be a nice way to take out dragons, so nice I suppose they have poison resistance.

I don't see why they would, they're basically just another kind of creature. How far away they appear will no doubt be based on your Actor View Distance setting.

It will no doubt be difficult to convince them to land on the ground so they can walk over your traps though. I don't really see that as being a highly effective strategy myself frankly.

Perhaps not for all of them, but some might be more inclined to land than others. You might also be able to force them into a landing somehow, in which case a "mine field" of traps could be a good thing to have. It will take trial and error, I'm sure.

depends how far they are. not to mention the rate at which they are moving, the arc of your arrow, and the speed of your arrow. meaning you would have to be incredible to hit one
