I think I get it but ......I see people say they don't fast travel but they use carriages. Is it just the RP thing? Isn't a carriage the same as fast travel, and you have to pay for it? Just curious.

The difference for me is this: carriage fast travel is an action taken by the character in-game; map-based fast travel is an action taken by the player outside the game. To me carriage travel feels more like like a roleplaying way to fast travel, map-based fast travel does not.
That and you can fast travel to towns you've never been to before, for a price. Same as the silt striders in Morrowind.
I am bummed at the lack of snow whale mounts in Skyrim.
Yes, they are basically the same thing. As others have said though it may seem more realistic from a role-playing standpoint to use carriages and "pay" to travel.
The way I do it...characters can't fast travel from just any location, unless I roleplay they have a teleportation spell...they have to walk to a city, town or the like...where a carriage,or a realistic place a carriage or horse would be available...or a carriage would atleast be passing by that way...
It would be much better if carriages functioned like they do in Red Dead Redemption...that is what I would like to see in the next Elder Scrolls...
Essentially the same but with more style.
But you don't have to find a city first before using it.
