Fast Travel Consequences

Post » Tue May 17, 2011 1:39 am

I do believe that there should be a fast travel
system. But I also believe that there should be
consequences when you fast travel.Like 50%
of the time you should be attacked by bandits/creatures
or robbed by thieves and when you
get to your location and you'll receive a message that
says you been robbed.Do you think there should
be consequences for using fast travel?

Yea that could work...or maybe during mid travel you will control the PC again because you have to fight off the bandits. Or what about a limit for how many time you can use fast travels per day?

I think there should just be a sensible transport network, instead of the ability to just teleport anywhere.

If you get attacked during fast travel you should be able to take control and fight off the bandits. Randomly losing money/items from fast travel will ruin it. Better still, they should implement a good transport system like th3undon3on3 said.

There are already consequences. If you use it you don’t find new locations as fast or kill as many enemies which equals to less loot. Just like there are consequences for not using it, it takes longer and you have to keep killing all the same enemies over and over and over again. It is a perfectly just system as is.

I'm honestly sick of seeing fast travel debates. In every one I say this:

Add a travel network like Morrowind, and make fast travel toggle-able in the options menu. EVERYBODY. WINS.

So if someone tried to rob you, you'd simply give them your money and be on your way? Absolutely not, I'd kill the bastards and move on with all my money thank you very much. Some uppity bandits will not be robbing someone who fights dragons on a regular basis.

Agreed! There's way too many threads started about this topic. I counted 3 up yesterday on the first page alone.

But since I'm here, I'll copy my idea for fast travel over from another thread. Here ya go:

Let me start by saying I don't care for fast travel and don't use it personally, but I, unlike some, understand that I'm not the only one playing this game, and that my preferences aren't the only ones that matter. So I think its good to have it in the game and I can understand the argument made by those people that want a realistic alternative to the point and click of Oblivion.

With all that said, here's my idea.

Since it is Skyrim, and since this could loosely fit into the established 'lore' and culture of that society, I think the most practical form of fast travel that they could implement in the game(besides caravan network, mammoth, etc.), is to utilize some kind of ancient Thu'um transport, by shouting you across the map. Perhaps scattered throughout the game world, and in each major city, there could be small mystical ruins or ancient pieces of architecture that had been magically infused(enchanted) ages ago by the most powerful 'tongues' of old, with the ability to transport people by shout. Something similar to the size and style of the Ayleid Wells in Oblivion, but with a nordic design, and maybe each could house a large crystal at its core, which when struck with a rod or activated with a spell or something will ring and then reverberate with the sound of the shout enchanted within, amplifying it and carrying whoever activated it, wherever they wish to go. Whats more, is that since its already been stated that the cities won't be sealed off from the rest of the gameworld, they could, in theory, create an animation in which you dissolve and become one with the shout, speeding across the land with the sound and the wind, before re-materializing at your destination.(WOULD REALLY MAKE FAST TRAVEL SEEM MORE LIKE 'FAST TRAVEL') :bolt:

Again I'm going to say a throwback to Daggerfall. Which is fast travel like Oblivion, but with options and consequences. You have the option when traveling to camp out, stay at inns, which costs money, but will result in less encounters. You can travel cautiously or recklessly, which again effects encounters and fatigue. You can travel by horse (if you have one) or by foot, which effects how many days it takes to get to intended destination. It counts down the days, and there are almost always encounters. No random robberies. You are pulled out of travel and have to fight.

Thu'um Transport? Is that actually a part of the lore? I figured the Greybeards would be a little busy to do that.

I'd prefer Morrowind Fast Travel, but I'm fine with Oblivions.

Making it toggle-able between the two would be ideal.

This. Both fast travel and transport systems, but when using fast travel (by foot or horse), it will take longer because of objects blocking your way.

The consequences of click-on-map Fast Travel system are a worse, less immersive game.

Yes, it may satisfy some of the kids with lower attention spans, but as far as I'm concerned it introduces a major flaw into the game for no real reason. Many of you simply say "Oh it's okay. The people who want it can use it, and those who dislike it don't have to use it". Well that's not okay, because of course if they're implementing fast travel, they're expecting people to use it, thus making the game in such a way with fast travel in mind. It's utterly stupid. Don't you see that the game will be designed around the fact that it will have fast travel in it, making it have less content? Before, when you had a quest somewhere, you needed to actually, physically GO there, rather than just do a couple clicks and return. Morrowind's travel system was by far the best, most sensible system that could have existed, with a system of Silt Striders, Guild guides, and Gondoliers. I don't know why Bethesda doesn't acknowledge there is a way of having fast travel without making the game a joke, I mean if you need fast travel that badly can you not have Mages guild teleporters, or Mark/Recall ?

The most powerful tongues in previous eras were so powerful that they could teleport themselves great distances with a single shout. Yes.

Just to clarify though, I'm not saying that the few greybeards left be responsible for these teleportation devices, but instead I'm implying that these devices are relics from a time when the power of Thu'um was much stronger and much more common in the Nordic people. My idea would be that these powerful 'tongues' as they were called back then, would have designed this transportaion network for the people of Skyrim to use ages ago, and that they still remain standing as relics of a time past.

I came up with the idea because it seems a lot of people want fast travel in the game, but want it to be more than merely a point and click on the map(OB), or a pay and appear in a new city(MW). I thought this idea could fit with the lore, serve the purpose of fast travel and do it without breaking the immersion in the game.

Being robbed as compensation reminds me of Port Royale. Everytime I loot too much, the game sends a military convoy my way to punish my greed :D
I'd rather they include both fast travel and transport network and everyone will be happy to choose. It's a sigle player game so nobody should care what others use because there is no competition. The two systems are not in any contradiction, so I expect Bethesda to try and please both parties here, as given the number of fast travel complaint threads, it's obviously that the transport in Morrowind has been missed by many.

Wow, that's crazy. I'm still not sold on the fast Travel idea, but it certainly beats the hell out of most ideas. I'm just worried it would seem a little awkward. Maybe my view of what Skyrim should be is too restricted.

Edit: Maybe my view of what Fast Travel should be is also too restricted.

[censored] a travel network. It's completely unrealistic. Tell you what, you can have your travel network but they have to actually travel so that they aren't sitting there waiting for you because they have no other purpose. They should keep regular schedules and have reasons for delay such as weather. Not so inviting now is it?

Days? That system in it's entirety is pointless to have because our world space isn't 500m across.

The perfect system for this small of a world space that takes less than a day to cross is fast travel with random encounters. No freaking messages, just a teleport to a location somewhere between point a and point b. Should happen about 1 in 10 times and realism is achieved with no wasted time.

Yeah, because in real life taxis have regular schedules and will never travel only for you right?. And how do you think horse and carriages worked in the old days? A travel network isn't unrealistic at all, and would make much more sense than anything else. It's not so unbelievable that there are people out there who make a living simply by providing transporting services to others.

Every time you fast travel an icon box pops up onto the screen and in fine text it states that you are wuss.

Nah, think if people use FT they should get the full experience of nothing happening.
Just give us a toggle to turn it off.

But I think some payed FT travel like boats should have random encounters with pirates and squid-dragons or weresharks.

Caravans, coaches, and carts should have random highwaymen robberies, or a crooked carriage driver leading you off into the wilderness to be killed by some robbers hes working for and split the profits.

Random animal attacks, etc....
