To Fast Travel, Or Not To Fast Travel

Post » Mon Oct 17, 2011 2:35 am

How many of you will fast travel? How many won't? Reasons or purpose why you will or won't?

Personally i will never fast travel in Skyrim because of the beautiful enviroment and its going to be a part on how i RP. I used to fast travel all the time in Oblivion because nothing exciting ever happened when i would walk from city to city. Dragons in Skyrim change that for me. Now while im walking im going to have to be on the lookout for those winged-beasts. And the fights against them are unscripted so they could swoop down and attack at any time.

I won't be fast traveling - at least not for my first play though.

It helps with the immersion of the game, as well as adding a lot more play hours into the game so you don't blow through the quests. I'm also
not going to be using quest markers and other quest-helping tools.

I don't ever intend to use the fast travel option. I probably will use the carriages though.

I will not be fast traveling unless its by carriage, and if I can ride carriages in real time, then I will never fast travel. When I walk to my destination I get to fight more. Then as a result, I get stronger. When I walk to my destination I get to find dungeons. Then as a result, I get richer.

I'll avoid travelling on horse back. Because I don't really want to play in third person.

I'll most likely use it to a degree, but for the most part I'll just walk where I need to go.

EDIT: Spelling.

Foot travel/horse riding and mostly Morrowind style fast travel for my characters! I will not say that I won't ever use the Oblivion style fast travel though.

Not much in my first play through, not at least until I've got the lay of the land, will probably use it for fetch quests as they tend to get boring real fast.

Most likely absolutely no fast travel except in carriages and/or other things like that like perhaps boat, especially if the ride can be in real time, which wouldn't be fast anyway.

I also don't want any quest markers or other quest-helping tools, but hopefully we can get enough info from npcs and/or books etc to finish quests without them :) :tes:

Would make an interesting poll.

I'm personally not a fan of fast travel, I plan to walk a complete circuit of the map 1st, picking up quests and testing out thieving skills/perks along the way ;)

I save extensive fast traveling for late game but I'll use it from time to time early on when it suits me.

I hope the game is designed so that I never feel the need to fast travel.

I used the fast travel in Oblivion after a while, I don't think I am going to use it for Skyrim though. I think it will add a lot to the game for me. Thankfully you have to find the places before you can fast travel there, even the cities.

I agree. You should add a poll OP.

I really like that they're not going to have fast travel markers available for all cities right from the start. Oblivion had those markers right away, and there were cities all over the province, so whenever you had to go anywhere you could always fast travel to a nearby city and leave from there, which made the world feel pretty small. Now going from the wilderness to a new city will actually be an adventure, like the trip to Rivet City was in Fallout 3.

Of course if you don't like that there's still the option of fast travelling to all the cities with carriages once you've reached one city.

Yes, but I will ONLY use the fast-travel if I am on horseback.

That is a limitation I've imposed on myself for a while now in Oblivion, and it's a great way to prevent me from relying on it too much.

I think that fast travel systems in all their forms and shapes are the most immersion ruining features there are in games.
I walk, run, ride, but I don't fast travel. Carriage traveling, while it sounds good on paper, is nothing but the old regular
fast travel system, just disguised as something that could exist in the world, and to enhance this feeling, it will set
you back some monies as well. I would accept it if I was actually sitting in the back of a carriage and traveled to the
destination. That way I could jump off at any time I wanted, and I would not miss any sights, or events, during travel.

I don't like fast traveling the only time I do it is if I am almost dead and I need health and then 99% of the time I will fast travel back to the closest location on the map.
