Fast Travel Now Costs Money

Post » Mon Aug 08, 2011 9:51 am

According to a new translation of the German Gamepro demo walkthrough by forum member -Glarthir-, it seems that Fast Travel will cost money!

What do you think, is this good or bad?

German: Zwar lassen sich Marker setzen, die (kostenpflichtige) Schnellreise funktioniert aber erst, wenn der Zielort früher tats?chlich schon einmal besucht worden war.

means

You can set marks on the map, but the (fee required) fast travel system only works if the player found the target location earlier.

They may as well hav left normal fast travel in.

The thing about this si it only makes sense for me if you go to a caravan station or port adn pay them to take you somewhere.

If you just use Fast Travel and it says in order to fast travel you must pay X amount of Gold it seems a little stupid to me.

I don't care bout fast travel, I don't use it much. If there would be otehr ways to travel from city to village and so on then I would use it much.

They're probably talking about the carriage system. All fast travel really is, is you having your character walk somewhere for you without you having to walk there, so who would you be giving your money to?

I like it. Whenever I fast travelled in Oblivion, I always made sure to bribe someone to take me there. Daggerfall fast travel FTW :D

Morrowind travel was the best, so this is a step in the right direction IMO.

I guess they're trying to make it more like Daggerfall's fast travel? I think that's how it worked there anyway.

I still won't use it though, except maybe for town to town travel for those annoying quests like the mage's guild recommendations.

Probably the carriages. Otherwise, what would the difference between fast travel and carriages be?

thats going a bit far im fine with you having to discover a place first but making it cost money is a bit of overkill.

i would have been better if you had to buy travel scrolls. it takes up inventory and costs money and must be replaced and its lore friendly as well since they had scrolls that teleported you in morrowind. it makes some sense since it costs money to use the carraige system at least i would assume then it should cost money to map travel as well.

I'd like it if it's instant, and time doesn't pass like Oblivion. Then you'd just be paying to skip a few hours.

Doesn't make sense for one. What am I doing? Throwing my gold on the ground? For what reasons?

No, I don't like it. On the whole fast travel debate, fast travel is still there. Use it or don't. It's presence shouldn't aggravate you. As for those fast travel addicts, they will surely find a way to procure the gold necessary to fund their convienent way of travel. Simply put, I see the system as a way to punish those who do fast travel. That is all.

All it does is make me plan ahead to make sure I have the money necessary to get from point A to B to C and so on, or maybe back to one of those respective points.

I can understand money for carriages though. Still, I'm not particulary fond of it. Considering I don't fast travel all that much, still seems more of a punishment than anything.

Good... I am glad to see that fast travel again requires you to purchase a carriage ride or some other transportation. I voted don't care though, as I still won't use it. I don't see the point of fast travelling in a open sandbox game. You would miss more than half the fun of finding new stuff on the way.

Fast travel in Oblivion was Teleportation, and it was stupid. Yes, you only traveled as fast as if you had walked that distance, but it was teleportation none the less. You encountered no enemies, lost no health, had to use no potions to heal damage you didn't take, and never had to repair weapons that you never had to use.

Paying for fast travel (if they don't simply mean the carriage system) makes perfect sense to make the game force the players to work and think, rather than letting them play "on autopilot." It is a simple metric to account for all the expenses incurred as a result of traveling over a given distance.

Love it :)

I love this news.
Its a great little money sink in a type of game where too much money is somewhat of an issue later on, for one.
Of course it makes sense, in the days when roads were unsafe due to brigands and highwaymen and whatnot, travellers too poor for a good horse of their own often payed merchants or caravans or convoys for allowing them to travel with them.

Ideally I would like to see a fast travel system like the one in Daggerfall, where you had the choice to travel fast and dangerously, or safe and costly, and all things in between.
A toggle for sleeping in inns or making a camp, a toggle for horseback or renting a ship.

Is that a proper translation. To me it seems a compulsory cost which I take could mean something other than money. However I think fast travel shouldn't cost money, but rather stamina. It is called "fast" travel so you would probably tired when you arrived. Stamina should be completely depleted when you arrive. If it is paying money, perhaps you have a payment because the fast travel assumes you would take a carriage some of the way.

EDIT: If it is my last idea that is the reason then it should cost money, but they should maybe give an option that takes more in game hours and depletes stamina for those who maybe would've walked the way.

I think this is a very good thing. Over all, less people will use it, which means they'll have more time to soak up the beautiful world Bethesda has created for them. I really like the concequences that come with paid fast travel. Now people will really have to think about what loot they should keep and what loot they should drop. In Oblivion, it was easy to fast travel back to a merchant, sell the goods, fast travel back to your pilfered cave, pick up more booty, repeat.

I know many people just wont use it anyway because of RP value, which is fine, but this just puts up some harmless bumpers for those trying to take advantage of every situation they get. Bethesda is doing their job making this a balanced game.

i mean, paying to fast travel just sounds stupid to me, unless this is just regarding carriages or some other form of travel that explains why you have to pay. I don't wanna be standing in the middle of nowhere, and when i wanna go to a city, have to pay to fast travel. that doesn't make sense. Now, if I'm in the middle of nowhere and i need to get to the nearest city, so I pay a local caravan/carriage driver to take me there, that makes sense. i mean, even if they make it like "Make an offering to the gods, and they will take you where you want to go," that's okay with me... just please no pointless payments

As much as I hate trekking across the entire map to get somewhere, I do think there needs to be a setback when fast traveling. Otherwise it just feels like cheating.
