Fast travel as a perk

Post » Tue May 17, 2011 6:27 am

that is completely redundant to have both...

@lady in the sky, read above statement.... it makes no since to have both features, it would be better if they jus added the morrowind system and just tweeked the divine intervention spell (say they giv u an option of pickin which place u want to go) and gave it to u at the start of the game

It's an easy way to please both sides. Of course it makes sense!

How 'bout a perk called " Don't be a Cry Baby" where FT is disabled and you have to walk everywhere!

let me ask u this, do u really think the devs would put both in? if so then i dont have anymore to say. if no, then we should start thinkin of hybrid ideas to suit both

I dont think anyone wants to walk everywhere... but we don't want to have to open our maps and click on a town to be the only way to get there quickly. We want alternatives.

After 5 years of complaints about Fast travel, I'm pretty sure both will be included. If not, -1 for Bethesda.

again... no fast travel =/= walking everywhere

no fast travel = having to use a transportation service provided in towns/cities/villages

Yes. :D

/facepalm

I was once like you. I wanted something that removed fast travel, as it killed my Oblivion experience.

And then I played an unmodded Oblivion, without using fast travel at all.

It's really fun.

It ain't that hard just to keep from clicking the button. An options menu thing won't help either, what's the difference between clicking the place and unticking box on the menu and clicking a place?

Edit: and if fast travel is optionally removed, there will be NO TRAVEL SERVICES. You either have FT, or you have services. I prefer services, personally, but... you know. Can't have everything ;)

No, I just want the ability to fast-travel from the very beginning and with every character.

This is a pretty stupid idea in my opinion because why make a useless perk like this when you could just simply not use it if you do not want to. If this is one of the ways you are thinking of getting rid of fast travel because you think it is stupid then its not going to work, just if you dont like it dont use it, they never force you to use it and if it was a perk no one would take it because there are probably better perks to choose from

Fast travel could be a dragon shout... Who knows, maybe it will?

well there is one that teleports you, maybe if you could shout far enough

I disagree. I think people will definitely pick fast-travel as one of their perks if they couldn't use it otherwise.

That being said, i dont think a fast travel perk is the best way to deal with fast travel.

I hate when people complain about it, its not hard to just ignore it and go on with the game. There is not one point in Oblivion when they forced you to fast travel somewhere so why would people complain? Those people complaining are obviously just nit picking the games "flaws" if you can call it a flaw

I don't understand your logic.

basically if you have it as a perk it would be optional, it is already optional becuase no one is forcing you to fast travel
and dont worry sometimes I dont understand my logic either

Wow, this is actually a good idea. Have travel a travel system and fast travel as a perk.

It's perfect to me.

Just because it's not actively forcing you, doesn't mean fast travel in Oblivion was good. It, however, inactively forces you, since there's no other comparable alternative (walking ALL the time EVERYWHERE would most likely get boring to almost every player sooner or later).
People complain about it (mostly) because they think there are better ways of dealing with fast travel.

Most people seem to prefer Morrowind's way of dealing with fast travel.

Now to a completely different question: having fast travel "optional" by a setting, or by an option (as a perk for instance) would make most sense if Bethesda implement a Morrowind-like transportation system as a base (which they hopefully will do). Why? Because it's "dumb" to be able to have two completely different ways of doing the same thing at the same time. It would be contradicting. More logical to have it as an option in this situation.

See? This is exactly why I suggest a Magic Map Quest.

Those who don't want fast travel, or want the immersion of Ships and Carriages will get what they truly want and that is to use the world to travel. They are happy. They say "Give me a Mark/Recall spell and a boat to Solitude and I'm Happy.)

Those who would prefer to have the option to touch a point on the map and just *POOF!* appear there instantly, well they can use the Ships and Carriages to get to all major(and maybe some minor) towns from day one and then eventually they go on a quest (similar to Nocturnal's Skeleton Key Quest ie: Early on but not too soon) and are rewarded with the Magic Map of the Hero of Kvatch! Legend says he was able to simply touch any point on the map that he had previously been and *POOF!* he appeared there.

In this case, everyone wins. Even the Devs, who would need to put little effort into restoring Morrowinds Fast Travel Hubs in each town and we know the "Magic Map" already works.

As I see it, this is no different then the Skeleton Key. Some want the challenge, some don't. Both remain immersed in their respective worlds.

Well, maybe you should be able to select it at the start of your game? and after that never again.
At any rate, I don't want fast travel removed. I just want to be able to turn it off.

Also, Fast Travel is not optional. I won't explain why as that has been done dozens of times before.
You guys can keep saying it as much as you want, but it will never be true.

so it would be a different type of optional, but you would sacrifice something (probably nothing too significant) to gain the ability to fast travel. Thats the difference here.

no now it would be optional option, it is optional if you can use it or not, and it is optional if you want to use it, I think people should just avoid it if they dont want to use it
and I dont want to sacrifice anything I like fast travel the way it is

Inconvenience? Did you ever go into the menus in Oblivion? It's really annoying. I hate going into menus, and clicking into 2-3 sub-menus.

If you really want Morrowind style travel services, focus on that instead of Map fast travel.

This logic is like "If I give them my bicycle then they will give me a car". No, you will be on foot. Or "If I let them to drop me to the sea, they would give me a boat or at least throw me a lifebuoy." No, you would drown.

The only good thing about Oblivion's Fast Travel is, it IS optional. Already.

I hope Map travel will be improved in Skyrim, more like Daggerfall style. As for in game traveling, which is completely a separate issue, they were missing entirely in Oblivion. I hope they are included this time.

PS. Yeah, well I have to add this.

Oblivion Fast travel is voluntary, so it is optional.

But for fast traveling, it is not optional.

It is like saying "Formal dress is optional. You don't like it, don't use it." but there is only ONE dress and it is a uniform. :P
