Fast traveling

Post » Thu May 19, 2011 11:42 am

What type of fast traveling in next game, would fit more.

Regarding marker.
In previous TES games marker was not moving during fast travel
It would fit to see your route on map (original FO and Arcanum style)
travel could be interrupted by various events or player

Also when setting up travel (inns, travel style, travel method, etc) there should be indicator that shows how much gold this travel consume.

But how this "full fast traveling" will look like?
I would like to see something between TES2 and Arcanum style fast travelling

I would hope that Skyrim doesn't have Oblivion's free-fast-travel-from-anywhere . . . as it really doesn't fit a TES RPG (in my opinion).

ALL Fast Travel should include a fee that you have to pay to travel anywhere.

And Fast Travel should ONLY be available from towns and cities (by carriages and perhaps by ships) and from mage's guilds (teleports).

We already know that there will be fast travel TES4 style and carriages (and I believe there may be boats as well, but I can not confirm it, but some one else may be able to....)

This thread has been overdone, there's like 12 threads about this. Some people Like fast travel, overs don't. Some people will use it and over won't care. Plus we know were getting a carriage so its might be like gta4 fast travel, who knows.

Gold spending should be optional, BUT if you don't stay in inns, than you come to destination half dead, tired and hungry (in case of realism feature)

Also when setting up travel, if you are located in wilderness, than your only traveling method should be on foot (or horse if you have such)

Sounds just like morrowind fast travel, infact that is morrowind fast travel. But as said this has been a flame war topic. Some people liked fast travel on OB, some prefered it in morrowind like you said, while others reckon it shouldn't be fast travel at all and should be normal looking travel. Personally I reckon all idea's have been said in threads and only time (and e3 maybe) will show whats what.

This. Every fast travel thread ends up in flames because people can't agree and most people seem to think their opinion should be pressed down on everyone else.

My opinion is both, travel services and fast travel. Then you can let people choose.

But I think Skyrims "carriages" will just be Oblivion style fast travel slightly more "explained". But I haven't done research on that topic.

There will be both fast-travel and carriages (most likely will cost a fee). There will be both fast-travelers and carriage riders. If you don't like fast travel and feel it takes away from your role-playing and immersion, pay for a carriage ride. If you have a severe phobia of digitally-rendered horses and carriages, use fast-travel. If you're like me and couldn't care less, use every option available in the game and see which one you like best, or which ever one you're in the mood for at that particular time. Fast-travel is not a big deal, as long as you've already found and visited the destination. Random encounters along the way would be cool but not necessary. Fast-travel still passes game time, it's just that you're not actually doing the leg-work, so to speak.

Has anyone heard/read how carriages will work? Will they actually show the carriage taking you across the country-side to your destination and allow you to be attacked along the way or will it be like the Morrowind silt striders, where you just choose your destination and a load screen comes up and then you appear in the new location beside a silt strider. Which, if you think about it, is no different than fast-travel other than that you had to pay for it.

Personally, I think this thread should be the thread to end all carriage/fast-travel threads. Only because we've already been told by BGS how it is going to be in Skyrim.

I'm hoping E3 might clear this topic up alot on how carriages are gonna work. A thinker can dream

Unfortunately so.

I hope that even in case of generic fast travel, there is gold and time consumption, as if your character went to nearest carriage spot, bought a ride to another stop closest to destination, and then from it went on foot to chosen destination. No gold? Character is forced to go on foot all the way.
Simply instead of doing it yourself, your character did that on his/her own.

Fast Traveling? Sometimes I would use it, sometimes I wouldn't. I doubt it is going away so this doesn't concern me.

As far as the map marker- I would like the marker to be in a general area instead of pointing to the exact spot on the map until you actually discover it. That would be a happy medium between morrowind and Oblivion.

Agreed.

Although it really does not matter because I can almost assure you it will be closer to TES 4 if not exactly the same........which I personally have no issue with.

If fast travel were to be removed I would like to see it replaced with an alternative. Something like a mage spell that teleports you to a mage guild hall in each town.

Gold spending should be optional, BUT if you don't stay in inns, than you come to destination half dead, tired and hungry (in case of realism feature)

Also when setting up travel, if you are located in wilderness, than your only traveling method should be on foot (or horse if you have such)

Why should fees for anything be optional? If Skyrim is anything at all like OB and FO3, having enough gold will not be a problem. If ALL fast traveling comes with a fee, it would help to slow the speed of gaining wealth (which is a good thing, since it is always way too easy).

If you are in the middle of the wilderness, and do not have a horse, you should have to walk (in the game world, not by clicking on a map).

It amazes me that so many here practically demand free-fast-travel-from-anywhere, yet these same people want the ability to climb mountains, want a very large game world, and complain that OB made it too easy to get wealthy. I'm not trying to flame anyone, but I honestly don't get this type of realism-if-it-is-not-too-hard logic.

My understanding is that as of now in Skyrim, you can only fast travel automatically to places you have already been to. If you're traveling to a new place, you can go on foot (or on horseback), OR pay to fast travel using the carriage system.
