Fast-Travelling

Post » Fri Sep 09, 2011 5:43 am

Ever since I first played Oblivion, I've refused to fast travel. I didn't do it in Fallout 3 or NV and I certainly don't plan to do it in Skyrim. I was wondering how many of you are among the patient and choose to enjoy the world rather than just teleport everywhere. For those who say, "Well when I travel on foot, I just run anyway and don't really pay attention." I feel sorry for you. I will often times WALK to locations, spending up to thirty minutes in route. To me, I feel like it adds to the feel and is one of the most immersive things you can do. Also, it slows the story down. If you thought these games had infinite playing time before, wait until you start applying this new method of travel. ( PLUS you can find endless alchemical ingredients along the way and to me, Alchemy is the most awesome skill in the game )

Many people seem to think, "It takes too long" but that's simply just a foolish thing to say. In Oblivion, I ran from Leyawin to Anvil (the furthest possible distance) in just 22 minutes ... However it was only 10 minutes on a black horse. In fact, horseback is my prefered method of travel because it's faster than running but not as cheap as fast travelling. To me fast travelling is something that spoils the experience and I've always been passionate about the subject. My friends never understood, so I'm curious ...

Do you guys fast travel constantly?

It depends for me.
If i can't go 1st person on horses then I will probably never use them. Therefore I will use quick travel a lot more.

In oblivion and morrowind I always fast traveled and never role played. Skyrim will be different, roleplaying and never fast traveling.

As much as I try not to fast travel, I like it to be an option. Sometimes I wouldn't play Morrowind just because I was like "Aw, I have to walk all the way there."

doesn't riding everywhere make collecting alchemical ingredients difficult to impossible?

for me i tend to fast travel because of the loot system, once you've maxed out your encumbrance there's no point walking back to town to flog stuff as anyone you kill/anything you find on the way will be too heavy to carry anyway which just seems wasted.

I like to walk to places before discovering them and avoid fast travel if possible. If I'm doing something like searching for a specific ingredient or plain can't be arsed I'll fast travel, though.

I have to get off the horse ahah ... In Oblivion I could recognize at least 40% of the ingredients by their physical appearence, so when I saw one worth stopping for I always would.

But I didn't think you could fast travel while over encumbered?

In MW, I generally preferred to "hoof it" at least the first time to anywhere, but took "public transportation" or used teleportation if I had to go back and forth more than once or twice in succession. In OB, the "perpetually respawning everything", the "everything adjusted to your level", and the "fight every 50 meters" made taking the roads a serious pain in the posterior, and I was tempted to use FT far more often than I wanted to. Eventually, I just stuck to the MQ and finished it for the sake of ending the agony (...not ANOTHER Oblivion gate?!?!?!) without admitting defeat.

In OB, it was quickly apparent that FT was needed because of the repetition factor. In MW, I didn't feel at all bored without it for months of playing, and the game offered alternatives that fit the setting.

I like it as a choice. A convenience that I can use if I want to, but one that comes at a price. I enjoyed the walks where I'd find something or someone new. More often than not I will go off the beaten path and wander around while going from one place to the next. There's much to much to miss by overusing it, but the game could get bogged down in long walks for some if the option wheren't there.

[edit, snip snip]

Do you guys fast travel constantly?

I respect your opinion.

I use fast-travel, thinking that there are other features that better deserve my attention. Interestingly, if the char used alchemy, by all means, there'd be more reason to walk and collect plants. When I felt strict, I use it inbetween cities; if I'm literally at City A, I would use it to get to City B. Then I could walk to a dungeon, a la past games like Morrowind silt striders.

(Then again, Morrowind had custom teleportation spells--essentially the same feature. I used that a lot.)

For me, my version of this thread would be sleeping. At first, I played the char without sleeping, unless he was hurt or ready to level. Then I started sleeping in the game's night-hours, eventhough it added more gamedays to my journal. That was my self-adapted immersion.

As much as I want to run everywhere, I'm afraid the lure of fast travel when going from one end of the map to the other will be too much. If the option is there, I can't help but use it =(

I have to use Fast Travel, it just speeds up time that I'm better spent looting dungeons and killing more enemies.

yeah that's what i found annoying about horses, the stopping and starting etc. Although now and again i would manage to collect from horseback (yes i'm the man :P).

I was talking about once i'd reached max encumberance, not being over-encumbered.

I wish they would just stick to Mage teleports and public transportation, but if FT is there I will end up using it to some extent. It can be helpful when you just want to quickly buy a spell that you know is across the map. It does break the immersion though, which is why I wish there were carriages instead of FT. Well have both in Skyrim though, so maybe I'll make a rule for myself only to use in-game traveling systems.

For the first playthrough i will probably avoid it completely and only use horses and the carriage system~ Other playthroughs i will probably use it.

I like fast travel. I use it all the time. That doesn't make me Stupider or less of a gamer then people who don't.

You find SO many things to kill imbetween destinations ... It's not like the action stops when you're in a dark forest!

My personal fast travel style isn't included in the poll.

I will walk everywhere in the beginning and use fast travel later in the game.

I like not using it but in Oblivion it did kind of drive me nuts running between Leyawin and Chorrol like 50 times per quest.

So I put some kind of rational idea behind it as like travel between Anvil and Leyawin because both are connected to the water as if I where going by boat. Or travel to the Imperial City then run to Cheydinhall from there. Sometimes when I've started walking towards the goal of a quest only to realise i had to talk to some person where i left from before i could go there I simply get frustrated and travel there and back.

But well i try playing with it as little as possible, and to be noted I started with Oblivion fast traveling alot.

I don't fast travel constantly but if I need to sell stuff I will or if I want to get to an in town quest finish from a dungeon. I still walk a whole bunch too though and ride horses and now probably will be taking the other means of travel some at least once to check it out.
