is faster leveling better?

Post » Wed Aug 18, 2010 11:46 pm

like everybody else I am extremely excited for Skyrim and can't wait to see what it is going to be like. Despite my excitement for all things The Elder Scrolls, I am kind of worried to hear there will be faster leveling. The reason I am afraid this might not be good is because I would hate to reach max level too early and end playing a character for hours without gaining a level because my character is maxed out. I may be getting worked up over nothing, but really really hope this faster leveling doesn't mean that I top out too early. If I am going to level faster I would hope that the level would cap out at a higher level.

No one can really answer "yes" or "no" with this, and anyone who votes and hasn't played the game is just making a wild assumption. We don't know. We haven't played the game and haven't seen how quick we level or that affects gameplay. I trust that Bethesda knows what they're doing so I don't think leveling up faster will hinder gameplay by any means.

Yes but it depends on how the Enemies are Scaled.

I am aware nobody has played it, I meant the poll general sense. I was curious to see others' reaction to hearing about faster leveling, and if they think it'll be better.

IIRC level 50 will be the level bridge. After 50 you can still constantly level up it just takes forever. Oh and I say maybe. Based on level scaling.

I believe the faster leveling comes with levels (and the time between them as well) meaning less. You need a few levels under your belt to distinguish yourself from the everyday would-be adventurer.

Where in Oblivion you would start out at level 1 with the apprentice level perks in your 7 majors, you would now need 7ish levels to reach the point where you can say "See these perks? I'm an X" where X is whatever class you want to believe you are now. You need those perks early on unless you want to be a lame-o beggar or something.

Pretty much this. In an interview I think they said that when they were balancing it, they came to the conclusion that the player needed to level faster, I think it is because the new system means that there's more emphesis on the player defining themselves through what they choose when they level, so in order to quickly define your character, you need to level quick in the beginning.

If the game is tough at the begining, yes. It will give you more options on how you′ll play it and the abilities to choose from.Al in all, leveling speed will probably slow down as you progress.

I just don't want to level up every 5 minutes. That would be annoying.

But 50 levels are fine with me, That's not much of a change. OB had ~30 , SI ~35.

(Yeah, I know you can be higher level, but the game isn't designed for that)

I wish there was an option for other. Because it can be ok for the first couple levels and progressively get longer and longer between levels. If the whole game leveled too fast like Fallout 3 then I do not think it is better.

In the Aussie GI magazine it said that at first the levelly up will be quick so the player can get perks easily at the beginning. This is because perks are a great way to make your character more powerful and they really define who you are in game. It slows down as your level gets high and then once you reach level 50 the rate at which you level up is dramatically decreased.

Going off what I just wrote I think the way you will level up in game is fine how it is.

I had an xp mod that reduced levelling by 80% on day 2 of owning Oblivion. I was already to level 8 by the time I got to the monks place to deliver the talisman. That was so disheartening, I made that mod and started over. I want the feeling of becoming skilled over a great length of time. I don't want to be god-like within a week.

Well if you consider that Oblivions cap (considering what mattered once you leveled past it) was about 20, and Skyrims is going to be 50, then I don't think we have anything to worry about. Todd was saying that it should be around the same amount of gameplay time vs. character leveling as Oblivion. Also, it doesn't completely cap at 50 either, it will still keep going but at a very slow pace and won't matter as much (kind of like Oblivion after 20).

To answer your question of whether it's better, I would say yes. I like it better because you get that feeling of progress much more, and the game is still being made to play for the same amount of time.

Faster leveling and higher softcap are intertwined, and with more level-ups the more perks we can choose.
I foresee that a perk per level will make Skyrim's leveling much more interesting than it was in previous games.
No one can really answer "yes" or "no" with this, and anyone who votes and hasn't played the game is just making a wild assumption.

Not a completely wild one - the perk system and health/magicka/stamina increase per level are completely different from Oblivion, Bethesda seem to think it will turn out good, and I think it will turn out good.
An assumption, yes, but not a completely baseless one. :)

Of course, this thread could be renamed to "Do you think the faster leveling will be better than the slower leveling in older TES games?".

This thread could have been written so much better, I think the leveling system will be fine. Bethesda have added things to the game and because of that have had to re-think the leveling system. They know what their doing.

More levels means more perks and tougher enemies. I for one am going to want to customize my character and fight the snarlier beasties as quickly as possible.

Well, they have said they're gearing the game so that what used be "around level 20" will occur at around level 50, so they can allow us to level faster (for the fun of grabbing perks and such more often) without ending up godlike halfway through the game.

Other than that, until we see it there's not really any way to know how it works so I'll come back and vote in this poll once I've played the game and have some basis on which to form an opinion.

Too fast and it feels as if you're rushing through the game and won't have time to enjoy hard times (yes, it can actually be enjoyable with things being tough).

Too slow and it feels as if no matter what you do you're not being earned experience-wise for it (therefore destroying some of the incitement to do stuff).

If we say too fast is 100% leveling-speed, and too slow is 0% leveling-speed, and 50% is an equal balance...
I'd have to say I'd like 40-45%.

Well there are actually TWO arguments in favor of it.
Yes, the perks are a major reason, but also, think about it.
You're the Dragonborn. You're a much more powerful being than anyone else on Nirn (well at least you have potential to)
So technically it would be logical that you gain power faster than say, the Nerevar, or the Champion of Cyrodill, who were just "normal" warriors who accepted to be part of Destiny's plan

That's how I felt the first Mass Effect was. I was a level 57 near the beginning of the second play-through.

But, you must think that it is faster than before. Not fast as in too fast that it makes you feel like you aren't accomplishing anything. Either way, I plan on replaying quite a bit, so I don't think it will be a problem at all.
