Fate of Mr. House

Post » Thu Dec 15, 2011 4:02 pm

In the event that a future Fallout game that mentions bits and pieces of the outcome of New Vegas, do you think Mr. House would be alive in that passing reference?

If so, do you think he is either ruler of New Vegas, the prisoner of the NCR/Yes Man/Legion.

Personally if the NCR did take New Vegas then it is likely the OSI will try to keep Mr. House alive to learn more about the tech that he uses. Probably starting with the Securitrons.

Legion probably will just kill him offscreen even if the Courier didn't.

Yes Man will probably just keep him around for [censored] and giggles; probably until House dies from the infections.

The only way that he'll be around is if his ending becomes canon, all the rest of the factions want him dead. And its not very likely that we'll hear his name anyway, we might hear something about an army of robots taking over New Vegas but thats about all I expect, for the most part they don't like to talk about specifics from one game in another aside from little hints and mentions here and there.

Caesar wants him out of the picture, scored out he shall be!
Only if his ending is Canon will he still be alive and undoubtably the ruler as every other Faction, NCR, Legion and Independant want him dead as he poses as a great threat to anyone wishing to control New Vegas.

Very likely, the "NCR Wins" ending will be considered the canonical one by Bethesda for all future Fallout games, but I can see them leaving Mr. House's final fate (Col. Moore gives you room to come up with your own solution) ambiguous, for various storyline reasons. Whispered rumors of his possible survival could make for an interesting Easter egg in later installments, if the storyline permits, without actually committing the developers to one fate or the other (à la Revan in KotOR II).

I believe that what is going to be official is the cut-contenct NCR ending where Mr. House remains ruler of the Strip, but everything else goes to NCR.

Impossible. The only way to stop House is to kill or disable his pod, killing him within 1 year. So either way House dies.

We need to realize that while Bethesda may respect Obsidian's wishes and let Obsidian decide which ending is canon, Bethesda gets the final say in the end.

Ever since I realized that, I sorta get the feeling NCR is canon, just because "UH VOTE 4 NCR IZ A VOTE 4 AMERICUH!!!1"

I REALLY hope they just let Chris Avellone or John Gonzalez choose which ending is canon. They wrote the damn thing so they'd probably have the best ideas of how to end it. We know Chris seems to be fond of the Independent ending and that all foreshadowing in game seems to point to either House or Independent, so I dunno how things would go down if NCR won. Hell, I think even a Legion victory would have more potential: NCR seems like the most dull ending possible. It's just a "the good guys won and continued expanding," just like in FO3. If NCR did win, I'd want to at least know that people like Avellone let them win, since they've already proven they can take a faction in a completely different direction (see BoS). House, we may come to see a technological society on the rise, bringing hope to the wasteland. Independent they can go a number of different directions with that. Legion, we've got another "long-term" faction on the map; otherwise it seems to die off as a political power.

I love Bethesda, but I think I love Obsidian more when it comes to writing.

I assume House will be canon, yes.

Whether he will be mentioned or not depends on whether Bethesda allow Obsidian to make another game.

He still has that entire year for someone to potentially come across and "aid" him, though...

The other thing to consider is that, within the game itself, there seems to be a slightly greater emphasis upon the NCR in terms of questlines available the player, etc. It's not unlike Lucasfilm's policy concerning multi-ending Star Wars video games, in that the "Light Side" (or rather, Republic/Rebellion endings) are considered the de facto conclusions for canon purposes. Not saying that it'll necessarily turn out that same way here, of course, but simply at a glance, again, the storyline scales are slightly tilted in the NCR's direction overall.

Say what you like but they do strongly represent the 1800's Wild West expansion and jingoist nature of America at the time. They say they're trying spread peace, bu they're still being massive [censored]s about it. America did it much the same way, they'd politely ask for your land, if you said no they'd come back and pretty much take it from the point of the gun. While I strongly disapprove of such hostility, at the end of the day it's an issue of practicality over trying to appease everyone.

Edit: Bandshaw- Either way it's irrelevant, House WILL die within a year, and House isn't going to live to see his dreams fulfilled. Ultimately you are responsible for House's death in NCR, Legion, and Independant runs. They ordered it, but we're given the choice to or not to do so, ergo you are the murderer in cold blood.

They represent any new nation with a big army. The Romans did it, the Japanese did it, America did it, Britain did it, the Soviets did it...

Right, but it's America's stereotype for a reason, and the NCR has always been a mimic of US democracy ever since they left Vault 15 with the G.E.C.K. It's not all that implausible to think they arent going to act like the very nation who quantessentially produced them. US left them with Holotapes from the Library of Congress. It's unlikely they were built in shape of anyone but America. And we have no idea how much history was different between 1950 to 2077, we could have forced ourselves to other countries too like in our world, but there's alot of missing variables. Point in short, NCR is made in the image of the USA, not anyone else.

Usually I'd agree with you, but I don't for three reasons:

1) One could argue Independent is just as "good," if not more.

2. NPCs from all across the Mojave imply both NCR and Legion need to lose. Graham disses the NCR, Ulysses disses the NCR, Cass, Raul, Arcade, Julie Farkas, etc etc etc. It seems odd for two main characters from DLCs (Graham and Ulysses) to imply the NCR is doomed to fail, then for them to win.

3. The Courier is our first neutral karma hero. No one contests the defeat of the Master's Army as being a good thing, no one contests the defeat of the Enclave as being good, no one contests.....the repeat of those two in FO3 as being good. Whoever wins in the Mojave though? Someone has to lose. It's impossible to please everyone here, cause no matter who you choose, a group or a person is going to be affected negatively. It's also impossible for the Courier to not get blood on his hands: you HAVE to gain bad karma at one point in the game and you HAVE to kill and/or totally doom something or someone. For this reason, I think it's a moot point that the good ending must be canon, because while past actions of past protagonists have implied a good ending, the Courier seems to be a rather neutral protagonist, doing whatever he likes.

Since we already know a "pure good" ending is impossible, then why settle for a "75% good?" They'll probably just pick whichever is most interesting, and the most interesting choice seems to be House or independent. Independent means they can go in any direction they want, House means that both the NCR and Legion survive to see another day, but both will walk away with internal conflicts. This means that we now have THREE superpowers (Great Khans may likely provide us with a fourth, hope they do) in the area and they're free to write the next conflict however they like. Legion could improve itself morally, NCR could become chaotic; anything's possible.

I personally hope House wins but wouldn't be surprised nor disappointed if Independent was canon.

I say House, I have posted many reasons but I saw a really good one recently, after you meet House you must go to other factions to do their questlines while you're still at House's doorstep.

The game makes you a trail straight to House, you can pick your path after a certain point but House is the one directly infront of you while the others are off in their own directions (on my first playthrough I never even found Yes Man).

Unless Bethesda somehow changes their mind about it at some point down the road. They still have the creative prerogative to do so, remember, and it wouldn't be the first time in gaming history that a believed-left-for-dead character either survived outright, or had some seeds of doubt planted as to his/her ultimate demise.
