Perforator from the Pitt DLC is probably my favorite for my sneaky types. Silenced, with a scope, so I can get off multiple sneak attacks without resorting to VATS.
Prior to that, the scoped .44 magnum is a wonderful sidearm because it gives a lot of punch for not a lot of weight and it's suitable as a telescope for checking out distant camps.
My normal gun complement is (I can't seem to carry less then 4):
- 10mm Pistol or 10mm SMG, good for plinking small critters
- Combat Shotgun (or the unique variant), for taking out stuff at close range (like ghouls, mirelurks)
- A scoped weapon (scoped .44 magnum, sniper rifle, or the perforator unique)
- Chinese Assault Rifle (or the unique) for tossing lead downrange
I've never played a character that got into power armor and the big guns. And I don't care for the sound effects noise of most of the energy weapons (or the resulting mess, or the horrid noise in VATS when it shows a critical strike).
