Story and characters for me. The gameplay of FO3/NV is just meh and annoying at times, and aesthetics don't matter as much IMO.
Gameplay is mostly meh but the story, characters and whole idea of struggling to survive intrigues me.
The gameplay was perfectly fine and enjoyabe in the 4 main 4 Fallout games even though they radically differ, I like the gameplay in fo1 and 2 but it's maybe a little on the easy side and doesn't require much tactical input compared to some other popular TB games. While I also lack the gameplay of 3 and nv I'd maybe prefer the gameplay especially combat to have a larger correlation with your stats and have the stats provide a little more influence.
But for me it's the moral ambiguity and dissonance Fallout creates where you're never sure what is right or wrong or even if these terms apply in a post-nuclear world that has been so brilliantly crafted with an array of intriguing characters and factions within a world of uncanny verisimilitude that for me personally has established not only Fallout but gaming as a deep passion of mine.
Tim Cain explains it best (time to bring this quote out again) "My idea is to explore more of the world and more of the ethics of a post-nuclear world, not to make a better plasma gun. "
Might not be coherent as this message was composed by an insomniac and it's very late...
I enjoy the character building part, perfecting a certain type of build and then just exploring the world!
You can make a good judge on those, except Fallout 3 and New Vegas are different in that regard. You should try fallout 1, its a really short game and has quite memorable characters and a good story.
