Favorite Childhood Cartoons

Post » Tue Feb 22, 2011 2:07 pm

I'm sure when we were all kids that cartoons were a big part of our lives. We watched them on TV every afternoon when we got home from school, we played with toys and ate gummy snacks based on our favorite characters, and we used to talk about them with our friends on the school bus and at lunch. Some cartoons were so great that even after growing up we still find them entertaining and nostalgic whenever we see them on TV or find a DVD containing all our favorite episodes.

So the topic is about discussing your favorite cartoons from your childhood. :)

My absolute favorite cartoon would have to be Courage the Cowardly Dog. I like it for so many reasons, like the fact that it uses dark and macabre humor and pokes fun of classic horror movies. I loved the setting of a run-down farmhouse in the middle of "Nowhere, Kansas" where an old scottish couple lives with their cowardly dog and all sorts of creepy and weird things happen in the area, and the dog would have to overcome is cowardice to save his family, usually by coming up with clever and off-the-wall ideas. Also the artwork in the show was really cool, I loved how the wallpaper for buildings was drawn to look realistic and detailed, and the use of live action videos for the TV set in the farmhouse was a creative touch.

I hope to get the DVD containing the first season of this show soon, maybe years from now if I'm lucky enough to have children they can watch this cartoon with me and enjoy it as much as I did. ^_^

There are quite a few for me:

- Classic Disney and Bugs Bunny cartoons back before they were censored like crazy (ie. Huey, Dewey, and Louie being forced to smoke all the cigars when Donald catches them smoking).
- Thundercats
- GI Joe
- Transformers
- ReBoot
- While not a cartoon, I used to LOVE watching The Muppet Show after supper during the weekdays.

Good times. :)

Batman: The Animated Series
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (1987)
Transformers G1
Spider-Man (1994)
Dexter's Laboratory
Chip n' Dale Rescue Rangers
TaleSpin
Tiny Toon Adventures
Doug
SWAT Kats
Rocko's Modern Life

So many others. They just don't make 'em like they used to.

I remember some of those shows, back when Cartoon Network was known for only showing classic cartoons. Then during the late 90's they started making their own original cartoons, and most were really good like Courage the Cowardly Dog, Dexter's Labratory, Johnny Bravo, Cow and Chicken, Ed, Edd, and Eddy, and The Powerpuff Girls. However once those cartoons became old themselves they started making crappy cartoons, and it seems like the more time goes by the more boring the cartoons get. Maybe it's just because I'm older now and haven't grown up with these new shows, but I know that I don't like them.

Of course! Most people don't know this, but in Japan the word "anime" is used to describe all cartoons, not just the ones they make.

Glad to see some Courage the Cowardly Dog fans. :)

Besides Courage I also like Ed, Edd, and Eddy, Hey Arnold, Sailor Moon (the original, not the crap DiC turned it into), Scooby Doo, and The Adventures of Birdman.
