Favorite City

Post » Fri May 27, 2011 11:27 am

Their already was a favorite city poll but many cities were ignored and replaced by villages... people kept saying why don't you make it yourself? well here it goes :P

To make people clear what the difference is between cities and towns/villages, I've made my opinion alot stronger through this map wich is to me the only good official source of Tamrielic cities:

http://www.uesp.net/wiki/File:TamrielMap.jpg

.... So besides those of Vanilla I also inlcuded the two cities of the two expansion wich add a city (well one is not on the map of Tamriel since it not lies on Tamriel)

anyway my favorite city is New Sheoth since it's very unique and really beautifull...

Ald Daedroth. Amazing architechture, and the non-euclidian hummings as the wind passes makes me all weird and warm.

Vivec obviously
Nowhere else in MW felt like a city
Nowhere in Oblivion felt like a city because of size
Nowhere in DF felt like anything other than a boring repetitive nightmare (and here it comes again)

I'd imagine Mournhold actually takes the cake for me, just because there is so much to do there (sortof a necessity when the entire expansion takes place there)...

I haven't played Daggerfall long enough to see the coolest cities (not like they wouldn't just be more random sprawl), thought most of Oblivion's cities were fairly boring (I liked Skingrad however), and I'm biased towards Morrowind because I've played it the longest and like the strange architecture. That being said, I like Sadrith Mora the most of in-game cities.

And Amazon Queen, of course the cities in Morrowind and Oblivion are as big as real cities, they're scaled down. You just have to use a bit of imagination.

It was a difficult decision. In the end, I had to decide between Stros M'kai, Jewel of Hammerfell, and Mournhold, City of Light and Magic. Stros M'kai is stunningly beautiful, with brilliant sandstone architecture and a lively citizenship, flanked on all sides by the ever-glimmering Abecean Sea. Mournhold is surrounded by temperate jungles, giving the air a humid, misty feel. Its alien architecture and colorful fauna complemented by its brilliant, strong stone structures, give the city a layered, terraced feel. Mournhold took the gold.

Mournhold. Aside from Vivec and Imperial City, is was the only full-fledged city I've been in.

The Imperial City is boring.

Traversing the cantons of Vivec annoyed me to no imaginable end, not to mention every single one of them looked the same.

And really even its not a full-fledged city, but just the innermost citadel of a much more expansive area.

I would said Sentinel as the represent of all generic desert town, not to mention the city of Sentinel is shape as a Star and the Moon on the map and have an awesome Dome-like Castle.

Daggerfall, with Wayrest and Skingrad in a close second/third.

Submit to the awesome might of Daggerfall! The towering spires of the castle bathed in the heaven's sun, the city ever sprawling, ensconced within the mighty walls. So much to see, so much to do, then you realize it's all procedurally generated.

Daggerfall is great just due to its proportions and overall size. In terms of execution it was more boring than watching paint dry, but it deserves credit and I think it is one of the most formidable powers in all of Tamriel. I also like Mournhold, just because it actually felt "metropolitan" - bazaars, open courtyards, ancient stone buildings. Even Vivec felt less like a city (a frequent complaint when comparing it to its original concept art) and more like a bunch of ornate stone boxes crammed with annoying tenants.

I agree completely. I would have liked Vivec so much more if it appeared as it did in the concept art, what with it's open air markets and such. http://www.imperial-library.info/gallery/mw_TAoM_p20.jpg

My fav isn't int he list, it's Suran.
I love how it's built in a hillside, close to a lake and with the farmlands in front of it.

Mournhold. City of light. City of magic.

It's the only city that really makes me catch my breath when my character wanders through it. It gives enough away to get a great feel of the city, but teases with the fact that I'm forbidden from truly exploring the rest of the city and the world outside. No other city has really felt so special.

Hmm, this is a tough one! I was tempted to go for Ald'ruhn; I love the style and I'm a House Redoran man myself. But in the end I decided to go with the Imperial City; my favourite is an Imperial who worships the Nine, so I couldn't really vote for anything else.

Nice poll, by the way! :P

I voted Balmora, mostly because it was one of the few cities that actually felt like a city. If only it had been double the size with a grittier labor town I would probably never have left it.

Honorable mentions to:
Mania Side of New Sheoth - Loved the layout
Pelagiad - Quaint
Vivec - Size was imposing at first

Vvardenfall being a frontier recently opened for settlement it made sense that there were no big cities.
Bethesda were just too unambitious in Oblivion. I'd rather have had only the IC represented but made impressive than have half a dozen hamlets masquerading as cities.
If Bethesda had included something like a bustling market square or busy docks then lack of size wouldn't have mattered as much since what there was would've felt more like a city.

New sheoth.
I love all the hidden secrets.
This is a much better poll by the way.
Only THE REAL cities.

Yes, that's definitely true. Bethesda does really need to make it's cities feel like more like cities. I think their problem arises from having all unique NPCs. It would be much easier to have, for example, a busy and believable market square if there were numerous unnamed NPCs crowding the place instead of three unique NPCs which really don't offer much more than the unnamed ones, but that's an entirely different discussion. -_-

Mine is Balmora, It was the first real city you came to in Morrowind, it was decently sized (for Morrowind) and will always hold a special place in my heart, specifically for the roguish skooma addict living in the slums :hehe:

My favorite city is from Vvardenfell. And it has to be Pelegiad. It is just a simple, easy to love town. Plus the Daedric Katana was a mere 5 football fields away lol.

*Edit* I liked the city of Vivec, because that was where my favorite events happend: First, I killed Vivec when I was level 1 lol, it was a cheap strategy. No cheats though. Second, because in that city, somewere through all the twists and turns and trap doors, i found some sort of guild. And i killed them all, and it gave me a 250,000 bounty for it and there was like 7 people, so that was cool lol.
