Favorite Composers?

Post » Sat Oct 09, 2010 1:21 am

Not sure if anyone here even knows the name of any composers. However, I think my favorites are Howard Shore (did the music for The Lord of the Rings, and will be doing it for the Hobbit too) and Christopher Tin (did the whole Baba Yetu think for Civ 4, pretty epic). If you have one, post or discuss.

You mean for contemporary films, games and so on? I'm very impressed by the work of Kirill Pokrovsy, the guy who did the soundtrack for the Divinity series. It's almost worth buying just for its score. :)

Edit: http://www.kirillpokrovsky.com/, which is a bit more useful. He has various free downloads going on there too.

Any composers.

Oh, okay. Not Shostakovich, in that case. :P I think he was a regular on Radio 3's "An Evening of Unpleasant Music For Your Displeasure and Suffering".

Well composers are basically people who create music, as such Plant/Page did an amazing job with Led Zep...I've been (and am as I type) been listening to Serj Tankian's solo projects and I'm loving them.

On a more traditional sense I love John Williams ( I mean c'mon :starwars: ) and obviously Jeremy Soule :)

He may not be my ultimate favorite composer but I've been listening to Ennio Morricone's work a lot recently: the Dollars trilogy, the Ballad of Sacco and Vanzetti and (my favorite) My Name is Nobody :)

I'm mostly familiar with those who've done work in video games, but some favorites are:

Nobuo Uematsu
Yoko Shimomura
Yasunori Mitsuda

I love Uematsu's work. Of all the music I've heard in games, none sets tone or atmosphere better than his scores. I can't picture the Final Fantasy series without Uematsu, though Square has history with a number of other great composers as well (see the other two on my list).

Also John Williams for his work in Star Wars, Indiana Jones, Jurassic Park, etc.

Shoji Meguro, does a lot of music for the Shin Megami Tensei series. Some of the best game music ever created, IMO.

I'm only going to limit myself to contemporary composers, since listing the dinosaurs will take ages, right?

Things to do before you die no.187 :
Sit in a darkened room, don't speak, don't move, listen to Mahler's 5th Symphony, sit for a moment longer, get up, switch the lights back on or open the curtains, return to getting on with your life.

Most of the times I don't memorize the name of the composers of the movies I watch/games I play. I remember Jeremy Soule though, obviously, for his work on TES :P

And I also remember liking the musical score for Shadow of the Colossus. Kow Otani was the composer I believe. Some of the soundtrack sounded just beautiful and perfect in conjugation with the game!

Now, other composers, I don't listen to classic much, sometimes I listen to some musics I like, but I think the only one I can recall correctly would be Camille Saint-Saiens (specially Danse macabre...)
