Favorite Indie Bands/ Artists

Post » Thu Oct 28, 2010 9:08 pm

As for me, only a few names come to mind. One of my favorite indie bands is The Thermals, link - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WaMDrv320NU . The other big name that comes to mind is Jesse Michaels. While known for Operation Ivy fame, he later went on to sing in Common Rider, link - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=agyLjWvAFRY , as well as Against All Authority, link - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HoQ14o2Xgcw&feature=related . Well there you go.

What do you mean by indie? The genre of music, or just independent artists in general? Because these days most of the music I listen to is on what would be considered independent record labels. Whereas a lot of what gets called "indie" is on majors these days...

But, in the interests of not being too spammy, here's some music anyway:

Elliott Smith - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OY8-pNuYZeE

Onsind - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QV2B_ra4FKA

I was basically talking about the bands that make a point to shy away from major labels.

I don't think I own any music that's signed to a major record label. And I own a lot of music.

really digging this album at the moment...
the burl the earth the aether by ice dragon,

http://icedragon.bandcamp.com/album/the-burl-the-earth-the-aether

the stoner rock, and metal scene in general, is healthier than it's ever been right now,
there's so many great bands all over the world, in sweden and the states in particular, that distrubute their own music, either by free download,
or ordered cd or vinyl,
so who needs labels anymore?

I'm not sure I'd agree on the second point - there's some great metal around and I think there always will be, but the metal scene is embarassing. Especially in the UK, where I'm from. (EDIT: the stoner rock/doom scene is another matter, though)

But that's not why I'm posting. I'm posting because Ice Dragon sound [censored] awesome. And to point you in the direction of this (now dead :( ) band, if you haven't heard them before: http://www.myspace.com/thefreezingfog.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4f33-gDaZ30 is one of my favorites.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cMFWFhTFohk is also a really good band. Not sure if they are still indie or not, though.

Not very indie since they've acquired a pretty big fan-base and all, but http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Sody5nHbQk4.

Sonic Youth

They were on a major label for awhile, but they're back to an indie label once again.

Personally my favorite SY songs are from the earlier albums, like "Confusion is six" or "Bad Moon Rising."

Be warned, SY is noisy. The entire sound is based on making noise, which I love. But most do not.

I suppose it's just coincidence. The music I like happens to not be found on major record labels. If it was, well then I'd own a ton of music signed to major record labels.

Good "indie" band I've been digging lately: Dumbo Gets Mad with their debut http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fGY-ziAyv0s. Cool little psychedelic rock-ish group.

I listen to whatever sounds good to me, and a lot of that happens to be independent. Hmmm... I wonder why?

So, here's some:

Sure they fit. The XX are independent (and, yes, awesome, too. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UfTfHTUUee4 is amazing.)

A lot of the music I listen to is signed to independent labels, but I swear I'm not a hipster! I don't need glasses and don't wear skinny jeans! :P

Anyway, here is a small list:

  • Tegan and Sara
  • The Airborne Toxic Event
  • Modest Mouse (they still count right? :P)
  • Metric
  • Silversun Pickups
  • Yeah Yeah Yeahs
  • The Weakerthans
  • Death Cab for Cutie
  • The Dudes

Actual independent artists and not those that fall into the 'indie genre' or indie scene? Lately, it has been the Puta Madre Brothers, The Toot Toot Toots, The Transatlantics, C.W. Stoneking, The Space[censored]s, Compulsive Gamblers, Black Diamond Heavies and The Hentchmen.

These would be the two major ones that spring to mind first.

Galt Aureus: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XNZufkPtzko (Song is The Glass Of Fashion)

The World Is A Beautiful Place And I Am No Longer Afraid To Die: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G5UhF80O2vc&feature=related (song is Victum Kin Seek Suit)

Both are really great bands. Really diggin the second band right now, they have great songs, I recommend them to any and all, to give them a few listens.
