Favorite JRPG

Post » Mon Aug 16, 2010 11:06 pm

Final Fantasy X, Final Fantasy XII, and Dragon Quest VIII are near and dear to me. Many a good memory provided by those three. I still have them and plan on starting a playthrough on one of them (probably FFX or DQVIII) soon.

I never played Rogue Galaxy, but I've been thinking about picking it up.

It would be very hard for me to pick an absolute favorite. My top three however would be Chrono Trigger, Final Fantasy VI and Dragon Quest VIII.

Oh I also forgot to mention Harvest Moon. It was a pleasant surprise, though I might not count it as a favorite, it deserves to be mentioned.

I'm a huge fan of the http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Suikoden, especially 1, 2 and 5 are excellent but 3 & 4 are good too! Don't care that much about the spinoff Suikoden Tierkreis for Nintendo DS, though.

Other good games are Phantasy Star (SEGA Master System, yeah!), Final Fantasy VI, Chrono Trigger, Chrono Cross, Xenogears, Threads of Fate, Star Ocean 2, Skies of Arcadia, Dragon Quest V, Dragon Quest VIII, Radiant Historia and possibly others that escape my mind at the moment :P

I'm currently looking forward to Xenoblade, The Last Story and Dragon Quest X, all for the Nintendo Wii. Pandora's Tower for Wii looks interesting too, but not really a classic style JRPG but more of an action RPG.

I'm a bit surprised how relatively few good JRPGs there are available for the PS3, after PS1 and PS2 both pretty much had the JRPG crown. Instead they gone to the DS and soon the Wii.

I felt actual emotions when I played Lost Odyssey, and I am fairly jaded as a general rule.

Still waiting for Xenoblade to be announced here.

In the following order...

Final Fantasy VII
Final Fantasy VIII
Final Fantasy X
Final Fantasy IX
Final Fantasy VI
Final Fantasy IV
Final Fantasy V

As you can see, my experience with jRPGs is very broad. :hehe:

FFVII was my first foray into games that weren't racing/shooting/Mario/Sonic/Tomb Raider however, and will always remain one of my all time favourite games, simply out of nostalgia.

Final Fantasy III (US) on the SNES is the obvious choice, with the less obvious being a game many people don't even know exists. If you're a JRPG fan, you must play Tales of Vesperia. When I sold my Xbox 360 and everything I had with it, I saved one game...because I couldn't give it away.

Final Fantasy III (US)

ARGH! Dispense with the silly US numerology; it's FFVI! Call it what it is. Especially since all the previous ones, including the proper FFIII, have been re-released.

I was initially confused by your post.

I was reading your username as 'Sea-cliff-two'.

Then I realised it was 'Cecil-Eff-Eff-Two'.

Shin Megami Tensei: Nocturne
Suikoden II
Final Fantasy Tactics
Valkyria Chronicles

And, I suppose if you want to count it...Demon's Souls

I'm guessing because unless it's made by Square-Enix, most devs don't feel it's worth the expense developing these games for the PS3 (or 360 for that matter). Big budget blockbusters always get unfavorably compared to SE's previous or upcoming title and often get lost in the shuffle, and experimental/widget games are safer to put on the portables and Wii. :(

Only one I can stand is Chrono Trigger and that Secret Of Mana game from the old SNES days.
I love those two, Chrono Trigger a tenfold more though.
It's story and characters and unique world design is brilliant.

JRPG's...I don't think I've played a single one. The art style has never appealed thus was never interested. I'm shallow, I know.

There's no such thing as a JRPG art style... perhaps you are thinking of animé which many JRPGs don't use? Each character designer has their own particular style. There is no JRPG art style. If you don't insist on modern graphics, Final Fantasy VI is a great JRPG to start with in my opinion. It's just a fantastic game through and through in my opinion. Chrono Trigger is great like that too, though by far an easier game.

One of the things JRPGs really excel at is music as well in my opinion. Final Fantasy IV, V, and VI still blow away most modern game soundtracks, in my opinion.

I love a ton of JRPGs but FFVI, FFX, Xenogears, Chrono Trigger, and Secret of Mana are all at the top of my list of favorites!

I have to say the Final Fantasy series has never disappointed me yet though:
FFI - I appreciate it in a retro kind of way and enjoyed it but I don't know if I'll replay it again.
FFII - TES style leveling... but totally broken. Again I enjoyed it but I don't know that I'd replay it.
FFIII - I still need to play this one.
FFIV - FANTASTIC game, I love the story and game play.
FFIV: The After Years - didn't play yet
FFV - I like this game, even though the story is kind of generic. It definitely has some of my favorite video game music ever, and the job system is nice.
FFVI - Outstanding story. I'd love to see a modern remake of this on a home console. This was my first non-action RPG though so it has a special place in my heart.
FFVII - Didn't disappoint me at all. I didn't like it as much as FFVI, but I still loved it.
FFVII Spinoffs - Didn't play
FFVIII - I loved Squall's monologues in the background as the other characters thought he was just sitting there moping. I disliked the draw system and never properly understood the junction system when I played it.
FFIX - Fantastic game! I love the "learn from equipment" system and how the story's plot twists are so crazy.
FFX - Another of my favorites. I love the sphere grid system (it feels like a minigame of its own to me) and I liked the pilgrimage theme.
FFX-2 - Off the wall change to the characters and tone of the game, but by far the best implementation of ATB in my opinion.
FFXI - Skipped it, MMORPG.
FFXII - Very different. Usually my favorite parts of the series are their stories. This time the game play wins over the story by far. It almost feels like a single player MMORPG.
FFXII: Revenant Wings - I liked it but I didn't finish it yet.
FFXIII - I loved the combat, but it could have used exploration and towns. I don't regret getting the game at all, and I did complete it 100% though the MMORPG-like farming to do so was tedious at the end.
FFXIV - Skipped, MMORPG.

I look forward to FFXIII-2.

I'm assuming JRPG = Japan RPG, correct?

*does a quick Google for screenshots of some of the listed games in this thread*

...nope. I don't like the artstyle. I'm in no way saying every style in every game is the exact same. But I don't generally like it. It's the body/face stuff I don't like, often feels too cartoonish or something. Granted the older, lower graphic/sprite stuff doesn't apply (sprites are sprites) and I think some of the more recent ones I've peeked at weren't quite so annoying to me. It's not just JRPG's, it's a certain kind of look.

I'm not saying JRPG's are bad games, btw...since I haven't played them, have no opinion on that obviously. :D Friends tell me to try the FF series for years but the descriptions/reviews haven't appealed yet. :)

Of all time? Persona 3, with Persona 4 extremely close behind it. They combine extreme amounts of character interaction, story focus, and combat depth. JRPG perfection.

Others:

Nocturne - Hands down, one the genre's finest examples of a game that does not rely on a plot or large cast of characters to be compelling, thought-provoking, and [censored] awesome. To think, I generally resent games that provide neither sandbox gameplay nor a heavy plot focus, but this one manages to be great regardless. Also, it remains (to me, at least) one of the most punishingly difficult RPGs of all time.
Final Fantasy X - My favorite entry in the FF series.
Final Fantasy IX - My second favorite.
Final Fantasy VI - Great, but Kefka holds it back from making it up there with my favorites in the series.
Final Fantasy VII - Loved the Materia system.
Chrono Cross and Trigger - Masterpieces. 'Nuff said. Why aren't these standing up there with Persona 3 and 4? Too short and too easy. Amazing games they are, but not challenging and are over long before I want them to be.
Tales of Vesperia - One of the best modern JRPGs IMHO.
Lost Odyssey - Amazing soundtrack, solid gameplay, and a very memorable game overall. Only problem is an extremely weak Disc 3.
Star Ocean 4 - The only Star Ocean game I really like.

Honorables:

Valkyrie Profile 2 - Incredible visuals, solid voice acting, good story, and a unique combat system. The incessant grinding holds it back from greatness, though.
Digital Devil Saga 1 & 2 - Solid JRPGs, but don't live up to the quality standard of SMT games. They feel more like Final Fantasy. They're also extremely grind-heavy. I'm talking Biblical proportions here, stuff that would turn away an MMO fanatic. Only the most patient of gamers need apply.
Dragon Quest 8 - Superb visuals, more open world (though somewhat dull after a while), and challenging. What holds this one back? That damned Alchemy Pot.
Xenosaga series - Mainly 1 and 3. Unique gameplay, at least in 1, and generally high quality JRPGs with excellent stories and gameplay. 2 was a mess and 3, while better than 1, dumbed down the combat a bit too much for my liking.

Shame about that PS3 localization. After playing it three times on Xbox 360, I still wanna play it, and all that extra content on PS3 would've been a great excuse.

Downloaded the Tales of Graces f demo from the Japanese PSN this morning though and I'm somewhat glad we're getting an entirely new game as opposed to Vesperia PS3. Xillia is the one I have my eye on though, really hope Graces does well enough to warrant localizing Xillia.

Ugh, don't remind me. I'll never forgive Namco for that. It seems Tales Of is just one of those series that Japan is extremely reluctant to treat Western gamers to. <_<
