Favorite JRPG

Post » Tue Aug 17, 2010 1:01 am

As the title says, what are your favorite jrpgs? While I am not the biggest fan of the series, there are a handful of games that I do hold close to my heart. All of which appeared on the ps2 and DS none the less. As far as my favorites go, here they are.

Dragon Quest 8
Persona 3 fes (hope to get 4)
Final Fantasy 12
.Hack series (original)
Dark Cloud 2
The World Ends With You
Dragon Quest 9: Sentinels of the Starry Sky (they made turn-based feel fresh again)
Rogue Galaxy

As far as I go, these are pretty much all of the jrpg's that I truly love. The genre as a whole feels very flushed out with sub-standard games, but these ones have really shown that they can be awesome experiences. Well that's it for me. It is now your turn to list some of your favorites, if you so desire. By the way, if anyone can give any recommendations on titles I would like based on my list, I would be grateful.

Two games that I know a lot of people didn't play and don't put up there as huge, big name RPG contenders.

- Valkyrie Profile 2: Silmeria
- Tales of Symphonia

I opened the door to RPGs with FFVII, so it holds a special place in my heart and it's up there by default.

Chrono Trigger. The rest can go to hell.

Edit: More that shouldn't go to hell:

- Earthbound when I get around to finishing it.
- Sailor Moon RPG for memories.

I haven't played very many, but I'd have to put Final Fantasy IX at the top of the list.

Allmost all of them.

The times of JRPG's have run out for me though. Now that we have games like Fallout 3 and Oblivion the only JRPG's I can stand to play is the Shin Megami Tensei series.

Final Fantasy 9. It has just the right amount of traditional and modern elements, with interesting story, locations and people (and non-people :hehe:).

And music. It has the best basic battle music of any FF game. Well, apart from 13.

  • Legend of Dragoon
  • Final Fantasy VIII & Final Fantasy X

I've played a lot of JRPGs. It is a genre that I really like, perhaps it's because it was one of the first I was ever introduced to. In any case, I've played a lot of JRPGs, but I always think back to these three.

Do Shenmue or Yakuza count? If not, Demon's Souls has to count, it's by a Japanese developer, even though it has Western influences. I've never been a big fan of Japanese RPGs, and that's specifically because of the turn-based combat.

1. Terranigma -SNES
2. Lufia 2 - SNES
3. FFIV-VI and IX - SNES, PSX
4. Tales of Symphonia - Gamecube
5. Tales of Vesperia - X360
6. Chrono Cross(And trigger too to some extent) - PSX, SNES
7. Mother 2&3(Earthbound series) - SNES, GBA
8. Treasure of the Rudras - SNES
9. Pokemon Red/Blue - Gameboy
10. Dragon Warrior Monsters - Gameboy

Despite the not so good translation, I have yet to find something that tops Terranigma. HCBailly has a http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZVLuA_xye2k of it if you don't have the means to get it. He considers it one of his favs too

Well Shenmue is more of an adventure game. As for Demon Souls, that game is an rpg from Japan, but was really developed with a western rpg mindset. Put what you want though. It is up to you to decide.
