Ludacris - Last of a Dying Breed

This is a good one.

Have you heard both versions?

Geto Boy's "Mind playing tricks on me" is haunting. Heh.

I liked just about everything out of Houston back in the day.

Prison Riot - DMG (he's from the Twin Cities, but turned into a 5th Ward boy)
Another [censored] in the Morgue - Scarface
Chuckie and Chuckwick by Bushwick Bill
Psycho or Paranoia by Ganksta N-I-P horror rap at it's highest level there.

Few Others
Mac Mall - My Opinion
Spice 1 - Down in the Ghetto, 187 Proof, etc.
Ghetto Mafia - Everyday Thing
early Cypress Hill

I don't know much about the newer stuff. The genre never went anywhere for me.

Holy [censored], that's awesome :D That's a great attitude really, it's rare to see an artist who realizes he's making enough money :P

Yeah, it's really respectable. That's one of the reasons I love his music/persona.

Jay-Z is so commercial and embodies a lot of what I really don't like about contemporary mainstream hip-hop. Which is why it annoys me that I like him so much. Hearing Empire State of Mind performed live at Wembley Stadium blew me away.

Clearly you don't understand Jigga's mindframe. He isn't commercial in any sense. He's just diverse and well-liked. If you've ever heard Death of Auto-Tune you'd know that he doesn't like commercial rappers, skinny jeans, bright colors and gum-drop beats with candy sweet lyrics. This isn't to say he's hardcoe gangsta rap, he's just intelligent. Take a look at everyone under the Roc-A-Fella label. Rhianna, Kanye, Lupe, etc... Smart young folks with a realist sort of outlook. They rap or sing about struggle, and don't always have to make it about race. Jay-Z's entire BP3 was just so well written and had some of the best beats I've heard in some time. He has this Frank Senatra personna of being an individual who sets himself apart from typical "hardcoe rappers"

Hence the line:

"They too stuck on being hardcoe I chuck the deuce up." from Empire State of Mind.

He isn't commercial, just popular. He actually pulls off being popular without having to make crappy "Lolly Pop" auto-tune friendly songs. One of the best.

As far as my favorite song of the genre? I can't place a quotations around it just yet, but at the moment it's Median's 'How Big is Your World'

I love this song. But I've also just recently pulled out The Game's L.A.X album(I was in a hardcoe mood) and I fell back in love with the Dope Boys song and House of Pain.

When I'm in meh Lupe mood it would definitely go to Paris,Tokyo off the 'The Cool' album.

I have 50's new 'Before I Self-Destruct' but I was dissappointed to find the same mean old fifty as before. He had a few soft songs I liked and Death To My Enemies, but that's it.

Go rap/hip-hop!

I have to agree there. I do enjoy listening to songs like Lollipop from time to time, I don't hate that music style, but I defiantely prefer Jay-Z's stuff. Some of my favourite songs right now are "Empire state of mind" and "Run this town" from BP3 and "Guns and Roses" from BP2. Jay is also very good at making his rhymes flow well, everything just comes together and works so well in his songs. Hell, I don't really like Linkin Park, except a few of their older songs, but Collision Course is a damn good album, and the rapper in Linkin Park and Fort Minor (Forgot his name) is not bad at all.

On that note, I've seen both Jay-Z and Lupe Fiasco live, Jay was amazing, third best show I've ever seen just behind Foo Fighters and AC/DC and I saw most of Lupe's show before I basically passed out drunk (Was my birthday :P ). I also saw Saigon and some other the year before that I think, it's been a while so it may have been at the same festival as Jay-Z. I actually walked right past Saigon in town the day after and didn't realize untill he was gone.

I really hate it when people try to make the "mainstream" verse "underground" argument, saying that all mainstream hip hop is bad and they hate it. That makes no sense.
Just because something is popular, it's automatically what people call "mainstream". There is no such thing. That's just a cliche title we put on something that we don't like, that everyone else does, to makes us feel better about "not" being in the crowd *that vastly outnumbers yourself* that does in fact like it.
It's hypocritical. Because if you like something, and everyone else does, it's not "mainstream". It's "rllygud".

/rant over. So much more I could add to that argument but, I just wont get into it. :whistling:

I was just about to post this actually, it really annoys me when people complain over how people who like "mainstream" music or whatever are just a bunch of sheep following the crowd. Who the hell cares it's popular or not? If I like it then I like it, it's that simple.

Yeah. I mean, a thread about HIP HOP AND RAP is made, and people are complaining about us mentioning Lil Wayne and Gucci Mane and Jay Z because..it's "mainstream".

The mindset of these people is that most mainstream rap these days doesn't have a good meaning or message, so the word mainstream has become a label for this kind of music. I don't think people actually mean all mainstream music is bad when they say this, they are just referring to artists who make songs about money, women, violence, etc.

Not enough love for Roots Manuva on this thread

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bwasixPSIrE&feature=related (crank up the bass for this one)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wbuSdXKtJX4&feature=related (hilariously un-hip-hop video)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1wI4_aNDLiI&feature=related

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XTprffMNKW8 (My absolute favourite)

The combination of his baritone voice, sense of humour, verbosity and British sensibility make him my favourite urban artist.

Lil' Wayne-I'm a Monster
Kayne West-Good Morning

Those two come to mind.

As far as mainstream rap goes I like it for the most part. When It is completely about money and girls I get tired of it quick.I like more meaningful things and it seems like any moron can come along today and use auto Tune and rap about money and girls.

I just listened to Death of Auto-Tune, and I like it (not a big rap fan), great backing band, and fairly good lyrics.

Thats the kind of music I like, performed by people who actually know how to play- not some kid given millions of dollars to sing somebody elses song over the top of a backing track consisting of nothing but kick drums.

Yeah.. I understand he is a G and he has done dirt.. but styll.. hes pretty garbage.

I found the Last of a Dying Breed version, the betterer version.

The bank yells mayday

I put it on tape then I sell it like Ray-J,
but not out the store (nope)
straight to the buyer cause I slung them out my trunk like the D.C sniper,
and six albums later you’ll deposit every word
till your memory bank gives me the credit I deserve,
top five damn right but really it just hit me
that three of your top five to scared to [censored] with me

My Resident is Evil, full of Southside riders
I hope your Pac-Man, I got 6 Virtua Fighters
That'll Blitz ya like Madden '09
Or hit you with the Mac and four 9's
[---------------------censored---------------------]
It ain't pretty, the Final Fantasy, they think they livin' SimCity
But I'm a MechWarrior, try me and I'll damage ya
Holdin' a Soul Calibur or shoot you like Galaga
Have my Creed Assassin' ya
So clear the room before the shotgun helps you meet your Ultimate Doom

Runnin' : The Notorious B.I.G. ft. Tupac

Those two rappers making the song ought to make it sound awesome outright. But even if you just hear the chorus, you'll fall in love with the song.

Why am I fighting to live if I'm just livin' to fight,
Why am I tryin' to see if there ain't nothin' in sight,
Why am I trying to give when no one gives me a try,
Why am I dieing to live if I'm just livin' to die.

Its such a bad ass song. And unlike a lot of rap these days (although this was made back in the good days) it actually tells a story and has some meaning. Another fav of mine is Road to Zion by Damien Marley ft. Nas.
