It's hard for me to choose. I'm nostalgic of stuff from the G-Funk era. Synthetic chirps and whistles complemented the beats and rhythm perfectly in those days. I think I'll go with So Many Ways by Warren G.

I listen to The Roots, Public Enemy, NWA, and Lil Wayne.
You seem to have a serious complex about him. Whether you like him or not, to say he's not good at what he does is a bit silly, considering how many people like him.
But I'm not going to get into this argument, it's been done before so many times. You're right, I'm wrong. Yadda Yadda.
Just because it's not your personal cup of tea doesn't mean it's bad music. It means you don't like it. Your opinion =! everyones?

Well of course nobody is right.

I never said he's not good at what he does. I said he isn't good at being creative with his music. It doesn't take much to appeal to the mongoloids that inhabit this rock.

Quite the contrary, actually. Many of his songs that he comes out with sound nothing like any other artist out there. Lil Wayne, as a matter of fact, is one of the most recognizable artist out right now, because his style, how he raps, and the metaphors he uses in his raps. No other rapper uses metaphors in the way he does while rapping. I'd say that's pretty original.

Ill say that he isn't good. I took some recommendations from this thread and found Lil' Wayne to be very laking. One of my personal favorites of his:

"Im a venereal disease, Like a menstrual bleed"

Really, thats just horrible rapping.

That's from A Milli, and it's actually "..like a menstrual, I bleed", and that gets the point across pretty well IMO. It may not be what you look for in music, but that's pretty original. I've never heard any other artist use such vivid illustrations through metaphors as him.

Actually if you listen to enough Doctor Octagon, you will realize that Lil' Wayne is a watered down version of said artist.

I have heard Doctor Octagon.

What point is he going for there?

"A millionaire, I'm a young money millionaire, tougher than, nigerian hair, my criteria compared to your career just isn't fair, I'm a venereal disease, like a menstrual, I bleed, through the pencil, and leak, on the sheet, of the tablet in my mind, 'cause I don't write rhythmes cause I aint' got time..."

He's stating how fluid he is, and how he doesn't write his lyrics down, he stores them in his mind until he gets on the track, and "flows", like a menstrual cycle.

Is it gross? Sure. I didn't say it wasn't. But he gets the point across through vivid metaphors.

Thats the only thing I will give him props on is he don't write out his lyrics and that does take skill. But when I hear things like this

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WB6fuY99wUg&feature=related

or this

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QToACoaR96c&feature=fvw

All I can do is shake my head. He is strait bitting.

I know what your thinking, " Its mixtape status, all kinds of rappers take other beats and use them" Thats all well and good but if you are gonna remix something you take the beat and put your flow onto it am make it yours. In the case of the first vid he strait took Bones flow .

Alright, I think we've already used up enough pages of this thread discussing why Lil Wayne may or may not svck. Maybe we should get back on topic and talk about artists we do like.

I started listening to K'naan recently. He's really good. Sort of like a mix of rap and reggae. Very unique style.

I had no idea that using vivid, disgusting metaphors made one original or creative.

Hell, if that were true, we could say Nickelback is creative and call it a day.

I haven't listened to a lot of Lil' Waynes "non-mainstream" stuff, so I don't know how that sounds, but 1) I can't stand his whiny, nasally voice (I know it's something really nit-picky to complain about, but if you didn't like a singer's voice, you'd mention it, right?) and 2) the way he raps. I'm not saying he's bad. The rhyme you quoted is clever, but I just don't like the way he delivers his rhymes.

I mainly listen to Atmosphere, Talib Kweli, Lupe Fiasco and Eminem. Collective Efforts and Cunninlynguists are thrown in there, too.

Oh, I don't doubt that Lil Wayne samples other artist. He has three types of albums he puts out. His Original, "all his" mixtapes, called his "leaks". His Carters, which are his albums that he puts out for purchase, all original songs. And his Droughts, which are ALL sampled songs from other artist, used with their permission. This music is also free, he does not charge for it. The only music Lil Wayne sells are his Carters. Every other mixtape, drought, or leak he comes out with, are free.
I get what you're saying, don't get me wrong. I just happen to like him for what he is.

Quite so. This'll be the last post I make specifically talking about Lil' Wayne, lest we get off topic.

I had no idea that using vivid, disgusting metaphors made one original or creative.

They aren't all disgusting metaphors. Honestly, that metaphor rhythm I linked is one of the only "gross" things I've ever heard him say in his music.

To say that it isn't clever would be just flat out wrong. It is clever, and that's why I like it. Lil' Wayne comes out with damn clever lyrics.
I mean, who could come up with that? Getting your point across in such vivid and ridiculous metaphors. In that one verse I posted, which is like, 1/4th of the FIRST verse of the song, has like 5 metaphors in it. That's just crazy to me. I'm tougher than nigerian hair? I couldn't come up with that, and I'd love to hear anyone on these boards who could. "..through the pencil, and leak, on the sheet, of the tablet in my mind.." Crazy.
I get what you're saying about his voice, it is pretty nasally. It doesn't bother me, however. Lupe Fiasco is great, and Eminem is the greatest rapper of all time. IMO.

I'll list some people who could easily create metaphors like that (not all are in the hip hop genre):

Maynard James Keenan, Mike Patton, Chuck D, Black Thought, Rza, Dr. Dre, Ice Cube, Ez-E, MC Ren, Doctor Octagon, Greg Puciato, David Yow, Tomas Haake, Chuck Schuldiner, Trevor Dunn, Trey Spruance, and even Varg Vikernes for Christ's sake.

His ability to flow is the same as most other artists. His ability to create metaphors is the same as most other artists. There really isn't anything special about him that you can't say about other rappers or musicians in general.

To be honest with you bud, you can't really say any of that given the fact you have more than likely only heard a very small amount of his songs, given your extreme distaste for him.
You know how many songs he has? Over 1000. Your opinion of him is based purely off of songs you've heard, which represent less than 1% of his work. Sorry, but that opinion doesn't really have a lot of validity.. Pretty hard to judge someone's work when you haven't seen/heard said work.
And his ability to flow is in fact better than most artist, because most artist write their songs down in notebooks/etc. He doesn't. He literally gets in the booth, and starts rapping. I have about 15 videos I can link of his sessions on youtube for you, if you'd like.
@Wyatts Waste Ranger, I also love that song. ^_^

He's not the only one that spits off the top of his head. N.W.A. did it all the time, Public Enemy did it all the time, Mike Patton does it. I agree that we will disagree on liking him, but he's really not as special as you make him out to be. I mean, I love Manowar, but they aren't special. In fact, they are some damn cheesy [censored]s. But I like it.

Last time I checked, I didn't "make him out to be special" as you say. You say he's un original, I say otherwise, as he clearly comes up with clever metaphors that are original, that no one else is doing. That's not my opinion, that's fact.
Just because I'm disagreeing with you doesn't mean I'm putting him on a pedestal. I like his music. But I also love other hip hop/rap artist more than him. Eminem, for example. I would listen to Eminem over Lil Wayne. But this conversation is about Lil Wayne, and that's why I'm telling you the things you seem to be misinformed on.
But, I digress, and I think we should end this conversation before it turns into spam.

If you want to place it in that context, I guess you're right.
But I can definitely statistically back up my claims. With everything I've said in this thread.
