Favorite Rap/hip-hop Song

Post » Sun Oct 11, 2009 8:57 pm

I really never really understood the concept of "if something is played a lot and everyone likes it, that means it obviously svcks".
Apparently they are doing something right. Wayne is hailed as the best rapper alive, there must be some validity behind that statement or it wouldn't be said so much. He's pretty much the most popular hip hop artist and most played hip hop artist. Just because you personally don't like it, and don't get me wrong, I respect your opinion, that's cool, but just because it's not your personal cup of tea doesn't mean it's "bad". That's personal opinion. It just so happens that about a hundred million people agree with me.

Its not that "because its played a lot it svcks" its more like he would most likely not have that title if there was more exposure for other rappers. I can think of at least a dozen rappers that could lyrically wipe the floor with him but they don't get radio play therefore they don't get heard outside the underground, therefore they don't sell as much which leads to them being not as popular and not as widely accepted and not in contention for the title "best rapper alive". Wayne is only given the title because he sells records. He sells records because he gets the most advertising and all that. I don't mind that he is popular, good for him, I just don't like it and am trying to understand how and why people do.

It's actually a fairly good judge of how awful something is in the realm of hip hop. The average demographic for being a hip hop fan are idiots with no appreciation for artistic qualities in music. That being said Lil Wayne cannot possibly hold a candle to other quality rappers, and he is essentially a money making machine for Universal records. He actually has one or two reasonable songs from each album, but they are clearly the ones that he made because he actually wanted to, rather than tailoring a song to make as much money, as be as popular as possible. That's all he is. A formulaic machine who turns out bland music for money.

At the moment three rap songs are being played frequently for me...As I usually hate rap, this is about as good as it gets:

I Wish (Skee-Lo)
Get Low (Lil Jon)
Bite Down (Boyz N Da Hood)

I don't really listen to rap, but http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=85Fp3hNxjsQ is one of my favorites that I suppose is considered rap. And http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=afX6VYn48KE&feature=related is pretty great too.

One of my latest favorites would have to be Overtime, by Ace Hood.

About who, Lil Wayne?
Well, I'm going to assume that's who you are talking about. I like Lil Wayne as a hip hop artist, not a rapper. It's no secret that most of Lil Waynes music doesn't generally make "sense", and most of his lyrics are just metaphors. His rap "style" is using catchy words and metaphors to make a point, and that's exactly it, it's catchy.

"Weezy F. Baby from Young Money baby, like the Easter Bunny baby wanted my candy, so I gave her my lollipop, then she made her body pop, then that made me kinda' hot (i'm lyin) that made me SAUNA hot, but please stop sweatin' meh, woman scream "get in meh", and what do I do? I get in them, I put on my boot and I step in them, right left in them, girl I'm nasty, I do my thang' and have you callin for meh like lassie"

Now, that doesn't really make "sense" but, when he sings it, the metaphors clash together and rhyme, and it sounds sick.
Lil Wayne honestly has created a new "rap" style, his lyrical wit is catchy and he can come up with some crazy metaphors that just make you go "lolwow" in real life, and that's why it's awesome. No one raps like Wayne. And he actually can free style pretty damn well, I've seen a lot of youtube videos of it. He's pretty good.
I don't listen to Wayne for his insanely deep and meaningful lyrics, I listen to Lil Wayne because it sounds [censored] awesome. Nothing better too ride to, too drink to, and too do whatever..else..you enjoy that makes you happy. It's catchy, it's fun, and it makes you in a good/confident mood.

Now, Eminem is what I consider "rap". I listen to Eminem for different reasons than Lil Wayne. Eminems lyrics have actual meaning behind them.

But, don't get me wrong. Some of Lil Waynes songs actually do have a lot of meaning. 3 Peat, I Feel Like Dying, Ride Fo' My N*****, and the song Everything, which he made very early in his career about his step father passing away, and the feelings he had about it and how sad he was. He has some real lyrical gems in his 1200+ song library.

I also just like his style, who he is, and where he comes from.

I'll support you there, I love Lil Wayne, though his latest album was pretty meh to say the least. It was an experiment, but rock really isn't what he's good at, looking forward to an eventual Carter IV :)

EDIT: I think Jay-Z is a much better rapper than Lil Wayne really...Weezy's good, but not the best rapper alive. Still though, you can call it commerical all you like, if I enjoy music that's enough for me.

I hate to break it to you but lol, Lil wayne dropped his first album in 95, he isn't "new", he's been in the game just about as long as anyone.

And if I remember right he released it at the age of 15, which is pretty damn impressive in my book.

None, because I hate Rap, Hip-Hop, and anything that is associated with it.

3 hours, 22 minutes. Longer than I expected, in truth.

I like a lot of Immortal Technique for the emotional depths he plumbs. Dance With the Devil is horrifying, You Never Know is tragic and Beef and Broccoli is hilarious.

I've only heard him on November has Come by Gorillaz, but that song is amazing. I need to check out some more stuff with MF Doom, any suggestions?

Yeah, I like Immortal Technique. Dance with the Devil is just a haunting song, it's so [censored] horrifying.

For MF Doom I'd check out the whole "Mouse and the Mask" album. Solid album, despite the odd advlt-swim theme. My personal favorites from it are Benzi Box, Crosshairs, and The Mask.

California Love - Tupac

Jay-z's black album was totally solid. Probably my favorite rap album.

I also forgot to mention, some old school bands. Beastie Boys, Morris Day and the Time, and last but not least Fishbone. Good times.
I also like Outcast. I kinda think of Outkast as sorta hiphoppop.
I have seen LL Cool J live, and he kicks ass. Put on a good show.

Yeah, like I said, I think Eminem is a better "rapper" than Wayne. Wayne just makes music that is fun to listen to. I'd consider it hip hop and not rap.
And yeah, Rebirth was pretty much "meh". In an interview with Wayne a long time before we even knew what Rebirth was, and before we knew he was doing a rock album, it was a little after the release of The Carter III, on one of his mixtapes, he says that he's coming out with something "new" soon, that most people probably wont like, but he feels it's the direction he wants to go. He even admitted most fans who love the Carters wont like it, and now we know that to be Rebirth he was talking about. But at least he admits it wasn't great.

And if I remember right he released it at the age of 15, which is pretty damn impressive in my book.

13. ^_^ He came out with a few mixtapes with the guys from Hot Boyz, and then dropped their first official album at age 13, Tha' Block is Hot. It's actually not a bad album either. Went platinum.

Yeah I have all his albums, I was just off by two years. Carter II is my favourite album of his, there's not a single song on that album I don't like and they all fit so well together on the album. Tha' Block is Hot and 500 Degreez were damn hard to find though.

High Plains Drifter - Beastie Boys

I really don't like rappers that take themselves too seriously, so I enjoy humor and a certain lightness to any rap I'll listen too.

NWA - Express yourself

Big Daddy Kane - Warm it Up Cane

Don't listen to hip hop really.

I love the Carter II, but I love his mixtapes series more than anything. The Leak series, Da Drought series, and The Dedication series. My favorite all time mixtapes of his are Da Drought 3, The Leak 6, and The Dedication 2. Some sick songs off those mixtapes.

It's hard to follow a lot of his stuff because he goes by so many different monikers, but here's a comprehensive list of stuff he's done you may have not heard of:

KMD - Mr. Hood and Black Bastards -- KMD was a group from the 90's that wasn't that popular but received critical acclaim. MF Doom (he was then known as Zev Love X) was their most prominent member.

As MF Doom - Operation: Doomsday, MM...Food and Born Like This

As King Geedorah - Take Me to Your Leader

As Viktor Vaughn - Vaudeville Villain

As Danger Doom (collaboration with producer Danger Mouse) - The Mouse and the Mask

As Madvillain (collaboration with producer Madlib) - Madvillainy

That's a lot of stuff, but it's all good. But as a starting point I would go with Madvillainy (top 5 hip-hop albums of all-time), Vaudeville Villain and Born Like This.

Almost anything by N.W.A and Classified is good, and Party Up in Here by D.M.X is also catchy.
