Favorites menu...

Seriously though, I think they should really go back to the drawing board for the UI. Just because it looks Apple-ish doesn't mean it'll be good. Hell, I hate Apple's UIs. They're more about flashy good looks than functionality.

Im not too worried about this. Its supposed to replace hotkeys, so it has to fill a similar function as hotkeys.
I don't think its been described very well. And if it is a true menu you must open, then Bethesda is just sad...

And this isn't a console vs pc issue. People on consoles like hotkeys too...

After looking back on the only info I remember on the "quick select menu" The hotkeying system in Oblivion had a menu to it as well.
After all, when you assigned hotkeys you opened a small menu. It sounds like a hotkeying method that links multiple items, loadouts.

I don't like the alphabetical ordering of items. It destroys muscle memory.
I like to have, for example, healing items in the first two slots.

Yea I don't see what was wrong with the hotkey system. The only thing i would like is the ability to have "classes".So if I wanted my bow and arrow I just need to hotjey them to the same slot. This would save on slots so one would not be taken up by bow and another by arrows.

That would be nice. Guild Wars had weaponslots bound to the function keys, which could fit a both a weapon and an offhand item/shield.

A favorites menu sounds useful, having something somewhere between hotkeys and looking over the full list. In Oblivion, even with the mod that triples the number of hotkeys I still have more spells I want to put in there than I've got places to fit them.

Also, didn't they say somewhere they still planned to have hotkeys on the PC?

I thought http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iEd0Zip6kpo handled the concept quite well.

Yeah, Gstaff came on another thread and said hot keys were in. Whether that's applies for console, don't know, but PC gets hot keys.

... Unless they cut it at last moment :whistling:

PC version has hotkeys, already confirmed. Don't remember where, but it was official.

I see people commenting on how this is bad for PC players and I, as a PS3 player, would like to say I don't like it much, either. I didn't really need more than eight hotkeys and would prefer not to have to pause the game to switch spells or weapons.

And where was it confirmed that the PC version does not have hotkeys?

Or that the favourites do not map to hotkeys in any many?

Or that someone played with the new menu system on a PC and it was god-awful?

If it comes out and it's wretched, by all means, moan away. But really, I think you're getting worked up over something when we have almost no actual knowledge of the topic itself.

Personally I think it will be interesting, but I understand those who don't like the idea since I found the hotkey system in OB to be rather good.

Again, there WILL be hotkeys on PC.

Can somebody please explain this to me?

Does this mean you have no hotkeys? And by that I mean like, press "1" and you change your weapon immediately?

Or do we HAVE to press another button first to get up to this favourite menu and then click on an item there?

I think this favourite menu system can be practical; but if there is no fast, easy hotkey as "press "1" and change weapon immediately (without any more clicks), then I'm sad :(
Having both would be good I think :)

--------------

About the UI in general: I think it's a good idea that you press your buttons (left, right,up,down) to navigate instead of clicking on tabs. It sounds smoother and faster and less annoying.
Good idea about that Bethesda

I agree with all this I am originally getting this game on PS3 so I won't have an overly big problem about hotkeys as such but once I save up and get myself my new desktop computer id then get it on there so for now I don't mind what is happening, as long as interface interaction is simple and easy to use then fine by me :)

I was thinking about the quick select the other day.
I really hope, like everyone else, that the rest of the dpad keys are still hotkeys.

To me the optimal solution would be to allow any hotkeys to select either a single thing or a stack of things.
Like a single direction could select either a different spell or an entire wardrobe and equipment change.

I also considered the following.

The Left Direction and Right Direction on the dpad would each select items for the corresponding hand.
Perhaps three items could be bound to each direction.
A single tap would select the default item.
Double tap selects the second.
Triple for the third.
That way you get 6 quick selects out of 2 buttons.

I also thought about using the up and down buttons as quick toggles for a different outfit.

You could set your character how you want, then hold the Up button to store that outfit with equiped items to that button.
Same for the down button.
This would be like in your car when you want to store a radio station to a quick key by holding that key to save the current station.

Only thing I hatw is it being ALPHABETICAL.

Why can't we choose our own order?

Also I promote all Weweb's ideas. +100

Give me a reason why they can't have a favourites menu AND hotkeys.

The favourites menu is obviously so you can just chuck a bunch of items you're actually gonna use in there, while keeping the full inventory for loot and other random crap.

I wouldn't say needing to open the favorites menu and choose the item you want is exactly like opening the inventory, as the inventory can easily get cluttered with items you don't use regularly, having a menu specifically used for items that you DO expect to use regularly could make finding them much quicker, as you only have to scroll through the items you regularly use rather than all the items in you're inventory. And the favorites menu does sound like it has an advantage that hotkeys don't have as whereas you have a limited number of hotkeys, as far as I understand it, you can put as many items in the favorites menu as you want. So the idea sounds good to me, but I agree on not seeing why it should replace hotkeys, because hotkeys have their own advantage in that you can activate them just by pushing a button. No need to open any of those dreaded menus, which is kind of the point of them. Thus, I see benefits to having both systems in the game, and if it's feasible, I'd say that's what Bethesda should do.

I'm going to say this only once  .
THEY ONLY TALKED ABOUT THE CONSOLE UI
The PC UI could be anything from this to the exact opposite.
The PC might still have hotkeys with the favourites menu to supplement it. You put things you use all the time on the hotkeys and things you use occasionaly on the favourties menu.

I'm going to say this only once  .

When dealing with Bethesda, console and UI interface is the same thing. Modders make unique PC interfaces after Bethesda saddles all versions with the same interface.
