Favorites menu...

Post » Wed Mar 02, 2011 10:30 am

No...Just, no...

I liked the hotkey function alot more than having to PAUSE MY GAME and go into my "Totally not an equipment menu" to choose my armor and weapons.

Simply, what I'm saying is the favorite menu is the EXACT SAME THING as going into your inventory and selecting your weapons, except you can bookmark your items.

as soon as a mod comes out with hotkeys, I'm getting it.

End rant.

But in all honesty I'm probably digging way to deep into something that's probably better than it sounds, and Bethesda will pull it off once again.

Besides, Every good thing they add > One simple bad thing.

Good point, But maybe they could let you hotkey more than one item to a single hotkey, such as 2 weapons? so you equip both?

Maybe the PC will have hotkeys for your favourites? Don't rule it out.

The lack of information on how the PC operates the new UI(or a reason for the omission) is really dissapointing or Bethesda and Game Informers part though. Skyrim may not be the biggest PC release next year, but it will be up there. I would like equal dev support on all platforms. :(

I'm not digging the menu as well.

I prefer the system used in the Oblivion mod, Enhanced Hotkeys, as you can bind multiple items to one hotkey and still have them all be used. All without having to go through a cumbersome menu.

Sure you're still limited to 8 hotkeys, but each can hold more than just one item.

yeah, that favorites bit sounds disappointing for us PC players. sure - nothing is confirmed yet, but with mods like Super Hotkeys, I have it configured that I almost never use the menus at all. much more immersive to just "think" "press button" "get what i need."

hopefully it'll work well and not have to pause and break immersion 10 times during a combat....

Ideally, the first 10 items on the menu would be hotkeyed. Otherwise it's weird, the whole point of having hotkeys is so not to have to go into the menu.

Edit: Nevermind, can't control the order, so that's out. Weird. If there's really no way to quickly switch spells or dink potions without going into a menu, the game is almost sure to drive me insane :P

Everytime I want to use a potion or equip a different spell I have to go into the menu?

It's ironic - I thought you couldn't get any more cumbersome than Oblivion's interface, but Bethesda's just proven otherwise. Why can't you drag and drop your items to arrange the favorites foldout, though? Oh right, because anolog sticks don't do that.

I don't use Hotkeys so it doesn't really matter to me but I'm all for something that's easier to use.

I'm going to say this only once  .
THEY ONLY TALKED ABOUT THE CONSOLE UI
The PC UI could be anything from this to the exact opposite.
The PC might still have hotkeys with the favourites menu to supplement it. You put things you use all the time on the hotkeys and things you use occasionaly on the favourties menu.

I dearly hope that they're reporting it to Todd right now. I mean, how difficult is it to say something like "hey Todd, maybe we should rearrange the skills into a vertical list for the PC users"? I mean really, the Elder Scrolls' creators have their origins in the heyday of the computer programming demoscene and Dungeons & Dragons. It's amazing that they seem to try so hard to avoid making special adjustments for each port.

I'm hoping what Eps says is correct, and Gameinformer just covered what they saw in a console preview of the game.

The article actually sounds kind of funny, on second reading.

"Everyone hates menus, they're a necessary evil. So of course Bethesda's replaced one of the most useful features in games with a menu! GENIUS!" :P
I'm really hoping it's just something done in addition to hotkeys, and that GI just described it poorly.

Did Bethesda ever make a different UI for PC ?

And agreed on the hotkeys. Very much so.

Given Bethesda's recent track record, that's probably not happening.

The only reason why Morrowind had a different UI on the PC version compared to the console version is because Morrowind was made for the PC first and then ported to the Xbox.

Seriously though, I think they should really go back to the drawing board for the UI. Just because it looks Apple-ish doesn't mean it'll be good. Hell, I hate Apple's UIs. They're more about flashy good looks than functionality.

Can somebody please explain this to me?

Does this mean you have no hotkeys? And by that I mean like, press "1" and you change your weapon immediately?

Or do we HAVE to press another button first to get up to this favourite menu and then click on an item there?

I think this favourite menu system can be practical; but if there is no fast, easy hotkey as "press "1" and change weapon immediately (without any more clicks), then I'm sad :(
Having both would be good I think :)

--------------

About the UI in general: I think it's a good idea that you press your buttons (left, right,up,down) to navigate instead of clicking on tabs. It sounds smoother and faster and less annoying.
Good idea about that Bethesda

Oh, you will have to if you play a fighter-mage. Don't you want to go to that increadibly beautiful and convenient UI thing every time you want to change your sword to a spell?

hmm ye this got me thinking aswell. id rather have a 8-way hotkey list than an infinite favorite-menu. seriously..do i have to go to that menu and pause the game EVERY time im changing my spell? i plan to play as a mage..and that involves changing spells alot..also during combat..particularly during combat actually. dang :/

I don't particularly like the sound of this either. Could Game Informer not have at least acknowledged the PC version's existence when talking about the UI? All the "press left on the pad" stuff means absolutely nothing to me in the context of an RPG's menu.

On the other hand, GI seem to have a talent for making things sound bad (all of the updates where Bethesda devs are speaking, rather than GI writing, have been far more informative and encouraging).

They didn't mention any use for the other POV(directional pad)buttons.

Judging by the way the characters are displaying weapons on their person It's possible we will be able to equip two items per hand and switch between them using the left and right POV.

It's possible they have hardcoded the D-pad Up button to this new Favorites menu (similar to the way Obsidian reserved the same button for switching ammo types in New Vegas) and the remaining directions will be hotkeys. *prays*
