Favourite Game of All Time!

Post » Fri Sep 17, 2010 11:05 pm

Just for the S**ts and Giggles, I was wondering what everyone's favourite game of all time is, and why you like it so much. Could it be that it has left you with a fond memory? Or were you just addicted to it, like Pete Doherty is to cigarettes and heroine? Be as long winded as you like; I will listen :)

My Favourite game of all time, and I realise this will sound really boring and convenient - being an Elderscrolls forum etcetera..., is The Elderscrolls IV Oblivion. The first time I played it, I was like "wtf? this is s***, I keep getting killed by rats and devil pixies (now known as scamps)" I put the game down and mourned a 50 quid loss. Then I read the instruction manual and realised that the difficulty slider was up the ladder, too far for me to handle - as soon as that came down, I was just blown away by all the random encounters and the scale of the game. What did it for me though, was the Dark Brotherhood - I genuinely felt a flicker of emotion in my rotten apple core of a heart when I had to slaughter my "brothers and sisters".

Fallout 3 - I spent the most amount of time playing this game then any other game that I can remember. I made over 30 characters and spent thousands of hours playing

Oblivion is my favorite. I've never played a game longer than I have Oblivion and it fulfilled my wishes for a personal dream game. I'd always wanted a game like it and didn't find out it existed until about two and a half years ago, but there it is and it's led me to my favorite game-developing company.

Fallout 2.
Everything about it.
The brutal combat.
The turn-based combat.
SPECIAL's action and consequence.
The dark yet humorous quests and dialogue.
The well written characters.
The unique gameworld.
The whole "post-apocalypse" setting.
The inventory management.
The HUD.
The world map travel and encounter system.
The skills.
The balance.
The weapons.
The thought put into places to have them make sense.

I can't think of a single thing besides the bugs which is bad about FO2.

But "why" I like, for example, the HUD?
Can't explain it.
It's just.... Perfect.

Secret of Mana(SNES)

It has a decent amount of replayability, and if you grind enough at the end in the flying fortress, it's possible to earn weapon orbs that can take your weapons from what you originally thought to be a max of level 8, to the ultimate level 9 weapons. I also have a ton of memories playing this game all the time with my best friend when we were younger, and we would both voice our characters, both during the text writing, and just throughout battles. A lot of laughs were had that way. It also has an awesome storyline that I fell in love when I was younger, and still greatly admire and love to this day. It's stood the test of time for me.

Oblivion for me too. I am fully aware of it's flaws, yes the scaling is bad, yes the facegen is 'interesting', but to me it is more than a game, it's a cross between a world and a playground.

I have always wanted to play the predecessors of Fallout 3 just to get a little a little bit of back story, although the Turn based combat doesn't exactly float my boat, I could put up with it.

Nostalgia - how I wish I could have just as fond memories :L No game when I was younger appeals to me any more, the only game I can remember enjoying with pals whilst playing on the same couch was Halo 2 when we had no clue about xbox live and all that Jazz. As for your game that you mentioned, I looked it up and immediately saw "Japanese..." - to each their own I suppose :)

Morrowind was the first game I became completely drawn into. I could waste 4-5 hours on that game thinking that I had only played an hour tops. Oblivion never did that to me, it just felt boring. :(

It was the opposite for me, although I played Oblivion first and only bought Morrowind GotY at 99p to pass the time between then and the release of Shivering Isles :)
Morrowind is still a good game, easily in my top 20 :)

Deus Ex. It's the game that knocked Fallout 3 from my top spot, something I didn't think would ever be taken from a non-Bethesda game. Deus Ex rewards you for exploring more than any other game I've seen. It's amazing how levels that appear so simple on the surface can take hours to explore if you want to find all of the items and books and notes and keys and... well you get my point. It also gives you choices for nearly every action you can take, and by the time you're done with a level you'll have made dozens of different choices. Not to mention the fact that there's so much lore to learn if you want to take the time to find it. The plot is also pretty damn good. It may not be a perfect game, but it's perfect in terms of satisfying all the things I look for in a game.

Oh and believe me, it's not nostalgia, I only pulled it from my backlog and started playing it a few months ago.

The Legend Of Zelda: Ocarina of Time.

Everything about the game was pure gold.

Except that damn water temple.

I want to say New Vegas since I like it more than Fallout 3 but I've played Fallout 3 longer. I think it was due to the fact that I had no idea what the game was going to be about or what to expect when I first played. Heck I didn't even know Bethesda developed the game until a few days later.

Hmm, that changes all the time for me. Probably one of the following: Knights of the Old Republic, Morrowind, VtM: Bloodlines or Rome: Total War. With the exception of Morrowind I still pick up all of those games every once in a while, I never grow bored of them.

I have never played a Zelda game myself, although that may have something to do with it being a Nintendo thing. I have never been fond of Nintendo :/

May I respectfully suggest you have missed out. Zelda was definitely my favourite before Oblivion and Fallout 3 came out. They are, I suppose, children's games, but the mark of a game is how it engages you, draws you in, and Hyrule has that factor in spades, even the music is, imho, beautiful.

(I see these topics all the time, and invariably there creeps in the Morrowind vs Oblivion, or this RPG vs that RPG comparisons. This is not the thread for that. So stop it. Yes, I'm talking to you. No, not you. You. Yeah.)

The trouble with "Favorite" is that there's so many metrics I can measure that by...

Favorite, in terms of lasting appeal? Morrowind.

Favorite, in terms of the joy of discovery? The Curse of Monkey Island.

Favorite, in terms of being driven to 'perfect' it? Worms: Armageddon.

And heck, there's a few other ways I could define favorite still.

Final Fantasy IX

A throwback to oldschool Final Fantasy games, it has what I'd say is probably Nobuo Uematsu's greatest work. Fantastic story, setting and characters, good old turn-based combat and an ability system based around equipment.

It is honestly impossible for me to choose my favorite.
I really like Shadow of the Colossus for its different type of gameplay and intriguing story.
I like Final Fantasy X because of the sphere grid.
I like The Legend of Zelda Link to the Past for the SNES because it gave me a great sense of accomplishment when I beat it.
I like Oblivion because their is just so much you can do in it.
I like Half-Life for the amazing story.
I like Killer Instinct for the SNES because it was a great multiplayer versus fighter.
And the list could go on. All games are just so different from each other that if I chose one it would not do another justice.

Shin Megami Tensei: Lucifer's Call.

1. The story is evil.
2. The sound track is evil.
3. The setting is evil.
4. The colours are evil.
5. Lucifer is evil and so am I.

Muhahaha...

Boktai or Zoktai. I like them both equally.

I'd like my Shinbok, but that will never ever happen.
