Favourite way to....close an Oblivion Gate!

Post » Tue Sep 01, 2009 5:58 am

Oblivion gates. :obliviongate:

The other-worldly gates take you to the Daedric version of Hell -- Mehrunes Dagon's Plane of Oblivion.
Lava and a firey death awaits those who stray too far, while the vicious inhabitants are far from hospitable.

And infernal caves and mountains are only the beginning. Get through those and you'll have to contend with each Gate's Tower, up multiple flights of steep stairs.
Magicians and Warriors await you here, along with dangerous traps and black altars.

And at the top -- the Sigil Stone; the anchor holding the Plane in touch with Cyrodiil. Remove it and you can once more see the beautiful Imperial Province.

So how do you get through an Oblivion gate?

Vote and post your comment!

EDIT: My favourite way to is to enchant weaponry and armour with each sigil stone. After I've got a good curiass, shield and weapon, it gets really easy.
If I can't get any good Sigil stones, my mage characters get to work using Cold enchantments on stuff and resist fire on rings. A permanent sheilding amulet is also really good, along with reflect magic on another ring.

I take one of 2 techniques usually. 1. I run like heck, grab the sigil, and go home. 2. I use summons and destruction so I can keep away from the nasties.

With my mage character i like to summon my own daedra and blast them back to where they came from!! :flamethrower:
With my stealthy character i sneak the whole way to the top of the towers sniping my enemies with poisoned arrows :ninja:

I get high speed and acrobatis and find every possible short-cut. Snatch and Grab!

Also anyone been to that plane of oblivion that has five towers in the center named after disasters? You usually got to go through a couple and pull the sitch but I found a way with high enough jump you can jump from one bridge to the other from the stretches of the tower. and basically shortcut! Also i love climbing the moiuntains and getting out of the map

Charge in and kill all of the daedra in my way, via a combination of hacky-slashy and magic.

The Deadlands make for excellent sniping - even inside the towers. My char takes a stealthy and methodical approach as she hunts and kills every living thing inside the gate. I voted 'other' because the only weapon she uses is a bow backed up with a little magic to help her as an archer. What she likes is that enemies tend to not be bunched up and normally present as one or two targets at a time from good range.

My character goes in swords and, to a lesser degree, magic blazing. Fall before me puny Daedra! My predecessor, companion of Morihaus and the blessed Al-Esh, did not fear death! Nor Shall I! In the old tongue, abagaianye naga! Foul beasts, patrons of the Mer and especially the Ayleidoon, enemies of Man and my blessed homeland of Cyrod, fall before me! Shanta, tyavoy balangua! Power my blade. Arcta naga!

I alternate my approaches. One on gate, I will charge in, no sneaking. On the next, I go in stealthy and slowly put down all foes. I explore the entire world though, each time.

Voted "Other" as I probably use all of the above methods.

I especially like casting custom Frenzy and Command spells that make the mobs fight one another. I also like summoning creatures then buffing them with a spell to make them stronger or faster. If all else fails then I just hit the mobs with Goldbrand until they go away :D

Other.

I had a mage-turned-warrior who considered the planes of Oblivion her personal hunting ground. She closed 38 gates before dying in a lava flow. Originally she fought as a mage with summons, poisoned daggers, and a paralysis staff that was coupled to weakness spells. She could paralyze an opponent for more than a minute. She went crazy over daedric armor and decided she wanted to be a warrior. After she got that out of her system she sometimes fought as a mage and sometimes as a warrior. She always emptied out the place before closing the gate. Sometimes she would leave a gate open so it repopulated and she would do it all over again. She invented a mini-game where she would remote detonate land mines using a flare spell.

I've gone in and destroyed everything that stood in my way with my big sword, I've done it the sneaky way and picked them off one by one, and I've run as fast as I can and try not to get hit.

I'm currently playing a mage but haven't done any gates yet.

Other:

My way tends to exploit the more open aspect of the oblivion terrain.
I use a water walking spell, ma out my acrobatics skip over the magma while casting healing spells...
Then find a few quick step ups to leap upon to get on a bridge...
Walk into the main gate runing and skipping, casting invisibility if I have to..
Untill I get to the sigil stone click on it then say bye bye Oblivion, hello new shiny item.

Of course depending on the random pick when entering the gates, this is either very easy or somewhat easy to do.

I close Oblivion gates in one of two ways (although it used to be only one):

1. Stealthy. I sneak through, using a combination of enchanted bow and arrows and poisoned arrows to kill every Daedra I come across. (this used to be my only method)

2. http://tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=33805 <---When real life forces me to hurry. (It's come in very handy over the last two days)

Pretty much the "All the above" option. Tatics evolve as the character evolves for the most part. Near the end of the MQ when I'm stockpileing Sigil Stones, high-end scrolls and jewlery it's pretty much a lopsided steamrolling of the gate complexes. Running into the Demora that has the paralyzing claymore is the only thing that ever slows my character down at that point.

Well, you can't use the same technique for all of them. The Cheydinhal gate where you may wish to keep Farwil and Brennan alive requires a slower approach where you're healing them as well as drawing as much attention away as possible with summons etc. The Great gate at Bruma needs speed, as you have a time limit to consider. There are also different objectives to consider - do you want another Sigil Stone, or to close the gate for allies, (or escort someone out)? You may just be in there for the Bloodgrass, Harrada and Spiddal Sticks and want to search the entire map.

So I voted other.

I like to simply run through them, opening any container I may come across.
It makes good use of the Athletic and Speed stats, and when combined with an item or a spell that gives you a bonus to these, it makes it even easier. :)
