Favouritism in released screens of the Dovahkiin

Post » Sat Sep 04, 2010 2:40 pm

The character they show us is just the one their using for the in game videos and screenshots. It's probably one of the devs characters. They aren't being racist or sixist, there just using the same character for simplicity.

I'd also add that, if you'll notice, the background of this forum (Which is from a wallpaper.) also looks like the same character, and the character in the trailer also looks like the same one, so aside from this character being one of the developers' characters, he also seems to be they're main promotional character. In Oblivion too, I don't recall seeing many pre-release screenshots showing a player character who was not a male Imperial, and while I wasn't around in time to follow Morrowind's development, I'm going to go ahead and assume in pre-release screenshots, the player character was also usually a Dunmer. And why not? For the main promotional character, Bethesda probably wanted someone who would best sum up the feel they were going for, because obviously, they can't show screenshots of every single character players' could possibly make, so instead, Bethesda probably decided to go with the first thing they thought of when thinking about the hero of Skyrim, and I guess that was the character we've seen.

Though I don't really need to see screenshots of a Dragonborn of other races or sixes, myself, just knowing we can play those other races or a female character satisfies me, now, seeing characters of other races would be nice, just so we can know what they look like, but they don't need to be the player character, they can be NPCs too, as long as they're not Nords.

it depends on whether or not Argonians actually have briasts again. in Morrowind full frontal Argonian action was great because there were no external dangly bits at all. in Oblivion everyone magically had [censored] and it was kind of weird.

maybe in Morrowind Argonian/Khajiit slaves get castrated and have mastectomies or something.

Now that you mention it Argonians shouldn't have briasts because they are reptiles. Khajiits should still have briasts however because they are mammals.

Um...

i mean i can see why Argonians wouldn't have dangly bits but Khajiit are still mammals, and while i don't know how male cat anatomy works because i've only ever had female cats and i don't feel like looking it up on Wikipedia just for one discussion i'll never have again, i'd imagine they'd have dangly bits.

but yeah it's not FAVORITISM it's convenience and tradition if anything. Morrowind had Dunmer up the wazoo in the pre-release screens, and Oblivion had Imperials. yeah obviously Dovahkiin can be some weird Argonian maid who's really good with a spear but for the sake of convenience they draw up some buff half-naked Nord and run through the game taking a bunch of pictures of everything.

would you rather they make up some guy in a Guy Fawkes mask? that's leaning too far into Bioware territory.

Because it's the internet? One must never be surprised on the internet when a discussion moves towards the female chest, regardless of the original subject.

They do, since I see cats routinely, both males and females, I know this, but I don't think people really need a lesson on feline anatomy here, so I won't go into detail on that. But regardless, I think we can safely say that Skyrim will NOT have those kind of details. It's either permanent underwear or... well, you know. Until body mods start being released, anyway.

dude you have NO idea. the second i realized everybody in Oblivion had the same size briasts i ripped my DVD drive out of my computer and stomped on it and threw it in a lake. never buying another Bethesda game again until they fix that.

actually yeah i totally just remembered the bit in the Real Barenziah where Therris has little barbs on his whahay. thank you Selbeth for reminding me of this. my life feels that much more complete.

I think we should also see some Argonian eggs. If I walk into every female Argonian's house and don't find a single egg I'm never playing another Bethesda game again.

You should also be able to make Argonian eggs if you know what I'm saying. :hubbahubba: (JK, six in TES would be stupid, it's not Fable.)

The BEST Argonian females should be able to hide their eggs VERY well.

Very Well.

actually the last reference i can see to Argonian babies (i.e. a passing quote from Douglas Goodall from 2001) implied that they (or he, at least) preferred the idea of Argonians giving live births. then he said the idea of them laying eggs was interesting.

I'd like to see pics of the dovahkiin as various races and genders, agreed?

Like all the pre-release shots of the Nerevarine and the Champion of Cyrodiil being varying races and both genders? Oh, wait... :D

It means 'dragonborn' in the dragon language. The player character is dragonborn.

All I'm waiting for are some Argonian screens.

I won't even buy or play the game after I see them. Just seeing some pictures of Argonians in Skyrim will satisfy my Elder Scrolls needs.

Who's with me?

I'd rather see a Breton that doesn't look like an Imperial. Should be interesting. I wonder if they'll be all creepy and skinny like in their Oblivion concept art?

Like Nerevar or Nerevarine only more upfront and badass apparent in the marketing.

I like the Nord hero guy, and it's probably not a bad idea to have a consistent image for trailers, promotional artwork, etc.

We know we can play any of the ten races, of either gender, and those who don't will just get a pleasant surprise at character creation.

They are oviviparous. They incubate their eggs inside them until hatching day, and then the live young come out!

I want you to take a second and look over all of the screenshots you have seen of our main character. Done? What did you notice? I'll tell you what I noticed:

They are all male Nords. I realize that Nords are this games focus, as Dunmer were for Morrowind and Imperials were for Oblivion, but really? You can't even add a screenshot of a female Dovahkiin?

I'd like to see pics of the dovahkiin as various races and genders, agreed?

They need a strong base character for a media campaign. Just like with Mass Effect and Commander Shepard, they have a consistent male Shepard throughout all the media released even though Shepard can be both female and male along with looking dramatically different from the one used in the media. It just is too confusing to the masses if you have a media campaign of the Dovahkiin and each time they do a trailer or screenshot it's a different race or six. It's pretty obvious really if you think of it from a marketing perspective.
