#1 Fear for Skyrim?

Post » Wed Jul 20, 2011 2:18 am

Last year I wasn't the best student. I mean, I'm far from dumb, I'm just lazy and irresponsible. This year I decided to buckle down and get my schoolwork done, but I fear Skyrim will interfere with that...

I fear it will have some dumb mechanic that was as annoying as the world leveling with you.

Not to be able to make a character of my own choice.

In TES4 it's impossible to make a character who is not a spellcaster. It's also impossible to make a really weak, or really stupid character. I dont see how removing the attributes alltogether gives me more choice. Also there will be tons of skills I will miss. Not forgeting about the faction I can join.

All in all, I fear there's little choice in the game, and all the playthroughs are quite similiar.

My fears - Bosmers are still terrible looking along with the vampires, and no werewolves. :cold:

You should be able to block with the 1H Weapon like in Oblivion, when you didn't have a shield you just block with your sword, plus you have to block each time an enemy strikes to block the attack not just hold down block which seems awesome (to me) and may lead to counter strikes. :mohawk:

You can block with a 1-handed weapon, however, it requires your off-hand to be free of another weapon or spell. I honestly despise topics like this, people are too concerned with what they 'might' not like about something that may or may not even be in the game.

I remember RPGs like Planescape Torment and Neverwinter Nights where Intelligence affected conversations with NPCs, with different number and kind of answers you could give them. Amazing.

Might lose a lot of the RPG feel of previous games.

I think it's more amazing that things like that are NOT in games anymore. Came up in suggestions threads several times.

I suppose all that I fear is for the dynamic elements and whether they will become tedious or are they well programmed. I don't want to save a city from a dragon just to look back and see another. Don't want to bear through a snowstorm to have a minute of respite before another hits. Wouldn't want to have quest repetition via Radiant Story. My fear really has no basis for it, so I suppose it's just the dragons I worry about.

It would be too much for today's standard of "RPGs".

My main concern is too much equipment variance. Hitting a wolf with an Iron Warhammer should hurt just about the same as a Daedric. I can see the latter being more durable, more able to be enchanted, or have some sort of armor penetration, but making a Daedric dagger deal 4x the damage of a steel one is a bit overboard.

I am encouraged by the weapon damages we've seen though. Hoping for short, deadly battles instead of the long slugging matches that occurred in Oblivion.

My biggest concerns have already been confirmed. Too much of the game world that interested me is being twisted or cut out. Character development and creation has been relegated to cartoonish buffoonery.

My next one is whether or not any of the terrible cuts and "streamlining" can be modded out.

That negativity here will invade my mind and I will catch the doom and gloom attitude that is hovering over the forum atm. We all live under the same sky, but we don't all have the same horizon.

My number one concern is: waking up one day, looking at the forums, and seeing Skyrim delayed.

Most of the things people "fear" about Skyrim on the forum aren't things I'm worried about at all. Most of that stuff is going to work out just fine.

Only thing I am really concerned about is the PC port. Hopefully we'll have greater options in mod'ing some of these issues on PC to get a game truly tailored to the platform this time around. Obviously we can't "mod in" things like DX11 and 64 bit exe's, but I'm keeping my fingers crossed we can at least fix the UI.

My biggest fear would be if the leveling system still had a problem that required you to micro-manage all of your skills to even be able to survive scaled encounters. Also, everything being scaled. These were the only reasons that I felt Oblivion had little replay value, because it was so damn hard to make a decent character who could still survive the hundreds of Liches and Minotaurs and everything that you saw all the time.

However, the only way I can see them making a booboo with this is if they make everything scaled (already unconfirmed, thankfully) or if they make it so you HAVE to take a perk every level instead of having a point system, while still having skill requirements for certain perks. That would make me very sad...

But everything else looks fine to me. I'm not too worried about anything other than what I stated above.

My biggest fear is that Bethesda will grow to not care about quality due to all the negative conjecture and just plain negativity throughout the community.

I'm pretty certain that the storyline and environment will be awesome, so i can scratch that off the fear list. My remaining fear though is that the melee combat system will be lame. Without decent combat the game will get boring after the first playthrough :(.

My only fear is that I'll have to swing 15 times at level 50 to kill that wolf that took me 5 swings to kill at level 5.

that's my new fear. scaling in Oblivion destroyed everything!

Oh hey, look, I'm fighting bandits with Glass armor and an army of Dremora generals!

Not to mention that if you're not a power gamer, the game gets really really hard as you level. YOU ARE SUPPOSED TO BE MORE POWERFUL WHEN YOU GAIN LEVELS.

Sooo, you're afraid that the devs will throw a fit in response to criticism? Wow. That's dumb.

Criticism is a means of improving the game.

Blindly pretending to love everything the devs throw at you is just plain fanboism.

My main fears is how the level scaling will be handling, and if there will be non-daedric artifacts at all. The level design is so incredibly flawed in Oblivion it's hard to understand they let that pass... I mean, when you need to lower the difficulty at the minimum in the beginning of the main quest because you play an assassin who got through 2 guilds before starting the MQ... The level scaling better be quite satisfying for me to forget that or not feel pissed off again.
