I Feel Bad For Crytek

Post » Thu Dec 31, 2009 6:21 am

The reason Crysis 2 has so many issues is probably because EA's short term economic interests trumped the 'release when ready' developer philosophy.

Crysis 2 has SO much potential but is fatally marred by the fact that it's clearly an unfinished game - I can't believe the grain glitch, sound issues, lag, etc. made it past testing, and somehow still exists!? Judging from the people I know (and people at Gamestop and Best Buy), Crytek's reputation has dropped dramatically to the point that they're no longer considered an AAA dev when IMO they should be. Sadly, I think Crytek may be in the same league as Kaos Studios (Homefront) despite nearly making a far superior game (not in sales but in gameplay and developer potential). They could be up their with Epic and Bungie - if not, inter alia, for the failure in damage control.

I've heard it too many times to count, "How about Crysis 2?" Then the clerk responds, "It's kinda fun but it's pretty broken". This leads to a greater problem as Crytek's subsequent games have a likelihood of being treated as 'B' titles - they're fast becoming know for releasing faulty software, which would diminish Crytek's brand significantly.

Crysis 2, despite the reviewer praise, and from my anecdotal experience, is being viewed as unappealing due to all the negative word of mouth. People all talk about how it could be great but is a technical mess.

EA doesn't care about Crytek, they want to meet quarterly projections. Crysis 2 probably achieved that this year but at the cost of gamer (consumer) regard, which means people will be less and less excited about future Crytek releases. What are they becoming known for? Slow support and technical problems - probably due to lack of adequate financial support from the publisher.

If/when Crytek's brand becomes synonymous with 'almost great but fatally flawed' and sales fall below EA's quarterly projections, Crytek will become another unprofitable developer that EA will try and sell. I'm not sure if the owners/heads of the company are still around, maybe Crytek's now just a collection of (talented) game makers trying to keep a job while working hard to make the best game they can within the economic exigencies of a massive corporate publisher, but if the next release is this unfinished, most will probably be looking for a new job sooner than they think because EA will drop you. No one wants to buy or play games from a failed developer.

Fixing Crysis 2 now won't change anything in regards to the damage done to Crytek's reputation, it will certainly please devoted fans but I feel if this type of rushed release happens again Crytek's brand value will be irrevocably lost.

I say this because people were so excited for Crysis 2 and now all they say are negative things about it and its waisted potential. Who can't see the irony in the having the the alleged "best graphics on the console", only to be plagued with a graphical glitch that makes half the game one of the most displeasing graphics on the console.

Had to rant, I hate to see good devs ruin themselves...I don't blame you Crytek. I believe most devs try and release the best product they can while negotiating the corporate behemoth(s). Art and business are poor bed fellows. Entertainment is probably something inbetween.

Shame no one has replied yet, you make very good points, I think everyone on this forum just likes bashing Crytek to much to listen.

I really don't feel anything has to be said. This pretty much says it all. For all my ranting about the game and how "Crytek svcks", in the back of my mind, I know it's EA. They needed a little bit more time on this game and I think it could have been fantastic.

I felt like Dragon Age 2 was also rushed by EA... It wasn't this unpolished, but the story was lackluster, and I had a few moments where I was being played cut scenes that were from parts of the story I hadn't even gotten to yet.

I bash Crytek because I didn't get what I paid for. Pretty simple really. Blame EA if you want, but Crytek made the game, no one else.

Heck the SP and MP are both glitch fests and they were made by 2 different branches in different countries how the hell does that happen?

The online demo was pretty solid, yet 2 days later we buy a full version that is nothing like the demo, again WTF?

So sorry if Crytek and it's fanboys don't want to be "bashed", maybe they should start talking to us and showing us they are still actually supporting the game aside from just bleeding us for more cash with DLC.

As it stands, I'll never go near a 'Crytek' game again.

If they actually do as they are promising - Patch this game, then as far am I'm concerned they have redeemed themselves a heck of a lot.

If they sit back, even after gaining MORE money from people for DLC and do not patch (as they state they are 'working on') then that is utterly utterly disgusting and more than shocking.

Why can't these people at Crytek get on here and chat with us to defuse this mess that is damaging their reputation and their future income??

Sorry to tell you bro, Crytek is an independent Developer. EA does not own Crytek. They are working on Microsoft a project set for E3 release. If you are wondering why we are getting any responses from them in the 360 forum versus the PS3 forum because of Microsoft. I only feel sorry for them because they did well with the PC community for a long time, and this was their first time tackling the Platform market. I think their corporate structure is what screwed them. From what I read, the CEO is allowing Crytek UK to run independently while they work its own projects. I blame Crytek for not moving all its offices to one studio, so the communications were better. Cry-Adam sometimes have to read our feedback just to see if Crytek UK did anything. For example, we were talking about Map Randomization, and then later he pops in to say that they have been working on it. A patch is released, he does not have notes for many hours later or a day. I think the CEO needs to pull out a can of whoop ass at this point and tell all their employees to get on the forums and speak to people.

On another note, it is all about the Cry Engine 3 being licensed to other developers. For example, click this link: http://www.psuni.com/first-screenshot-for-sniper-ghost-warrior-2-released-8768/

You will all be surprised! I am afraid the AI in this game will be running into each other and walls. If Crytek is having a hard time fixing their own problems why would I purchase any game with Cry Engine?

Oh....thanks, then I don't feel bad for Crytek. I guess they're just assholes.
