I feel bad for killing dragons

Post » Mon Jun 11, 2012 12:47 am

I realize that Dragons in the game will always attack you no matter if you're just walking around without a care in the world or looking for a fight (with the exemption of someone you meet later on), but I always feel bad for killing dragons. I guess it's because Dragons were hunted down to near extinction by people who believed that the only solution to the problem is to stick a sword through it and call it done. Whenever I end up killing a dragon I always feel bad for doing so mainly because I empathize with them enough to understand where they're coming from.
why is there no option to at least talk to them and figure out what exactly they want (even if it is the obvious answer of revenge). Does anyone else feel bad about the Dragons just a little bit? Or would you agree that the Dragons should be wiped out?

I would like to see an option to speak with some of the dragons but not all of them. It'd be nice if they had a few more NPC dragons that you could talk to and get a few quests from.

Spoiler
During the main quest you'll be able to talk to dragons. It'll give a decent description as to why killing them is actually the way to go.

I ran into this one dragon once that was just sitting there. Chilling on a mountain slope, enjoying the cool snow on it's ass while enjoying the scenery. I did feel bad after killing it. Realizing it had done nothing wrong that I could know of.

Perhaps if there was an option to let the dragons live somewhere, away from people, I could just let them be. However, they do attack towns all on their own, so while many are simply dragon hunters, others want to protect themselves from the dragons, and the only way is to kill the dragons before the dragons kill them.

You should read some of the in game books that describe man's relationship to dragons. Dragons are bastards. They enslaved humanity. They have no more regard for man than a man does for an ant. The extermination of the dragons was humanity's war for freedom. Kill the dragons. Kill every damn dragon you encounter.

Sometimes you can't talk things out. There is no common ground. There is no shared values.

Dragons believe themselves to be superior beings, and thus justified by default. The dragons being defeated the first time was basically, like if the entire world's population of pets and farm animals revolted against humans and killed them...if one were to look at it from their perspective.

and that justifies that ant to wipe out the entire human race? Not all dragons were like that.

When you see two dragons fighting it is actually a deadly debate of words. I don't think there is any reasoning with them. Including the fact that they to are Humanoids of Tamerial, as we are to a mosquito. Do you let mosquitoes talk things out with you or do you just swat them dead and flick them away because they are just annoying pests who could end up making you sick? Well that's dragons feel about every thing on Tamerial.

Only if that Ant can learn Manshouts. Seals certainly can: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B-yUKS3O66A

His point was that the dragons feel them self Superior to the races of Tamerial. If ants had a intellect of humans then do you really think they would stand by as we step on them and use all kind of nasty things to wipe them out? They are stupid insects. However in TES we are not talking about stupid insects but beings with a intelligence to match that which is killing them off.

From the ant's perspective? Yes. Absolutely.

It's either them or me. Regardless of what is said, or what terms are agreed upon; the Dragons will always consider themselves to be higher-beings. In time, the cycle of destruction would begin anew.
Until then, as the Dovahkiin - any Dragon I see, is dead.

the problem I'm having with this argument is that the only crime the Dragons committed was being proud. which is basically saying a person deserves to die if they enslave something and believe they are superior to that particular something (wither that's another human being or any other animal or a robot ect ect).
Did the plantation owners deserve to die because they felt they were superior to other humans, and enslaved them? That can be debatable, but I think that's the same premise as the dragons.
I have a hard time believing EVERY single dragon felt this way about the other beings on the earth.

This reminds me of the time I met the first Cyclops that I could talk to in Ultima 7. It talked about how humans are so quick to hunt his kind down for gold, and it questioned why it is so.

So I can see where you're coming from. Why do we go out of our way to kill things that are different from us? Why can't we co-exist? Don't they deserve to live as well in this world that we share?

But unlike that lone cyclops that could talk to me in a civilized manner, dragons in Skyrim don't make any such attempts to reason with us.

Personally I hate the "big intimidating beast that's actually just misunderstood" trope and I'm glad Beth went in a different direction with dragons. They're killing machines that deserve to be put down hard with the exception of one (and even that's debatable). Pretty cut and dry.

I thought Panthrax mentioned that it's really difficult for Dragons to grasp the concept of human speech, which is understandable I mean it's impossible for humans to communicate with most of the other animals and insects on the planet. at least at this point in time anyway.

From the perspective of TES I don't have a problem killing dragons but as someone that's grown up playing D&D it does bother me since I hold them in such high regard. I played many dragon characters during normal campaigns or Council of Wyrms. TES lore says they're bastards then so be it. I'm playing a human, they hate humans, well then its part of the role playing experience.

And because of that, unfortunately we cannot know whether we can co-exist with dragons or not then, because the universe won't allow it.
