I feel so bad for OCD gamers

Post » Sun Jan 17, 2016 11:40 pm

AKA - 'completionist' as they like to call themselves. We all know one. Poor saps :/

checking every filing cabinet and table

picking up every piece of junk

doing every quest in the never ending and very repetitive loop of settlement kidnappings/etc

exploring every marker on the map, every car , every house, every cave

talking to every NPC and using every dialogue option

this game must be torture for these guys :/ hell on earth, i bet

What a headache...

you need to break the cycle bro!!!!!!!!!

not every fork and spoon needs to get picked up!

not every settlement needs to be defended and fully stocked with settlers!

not every repetitive kidnapping quest need to get finished!

not every house and car you see in the distance needs to get explored!

if you can break the habit in fallout then you can do it in real life too. Use this game to treat the addiction

HAHAHA!!! You're telling me!

I've gotten a little better since FO3, Alan Wake, and ESO. The issue for me, when playing FO4, is that there are always little treasures tucked away in the world. I don't use strategy guides, so I gotta explore EVERY inch of the map..literally.

It can also be fun too, though. I had great fun clearing the fog-of-war off the map in Morrowind, for instance. It was compulsive, yes, but when I finally had the entire map uncovered I felt an enormous amount of satisfaction.

i see where you are coming from ...there is a fine line between exploring and compulsively making sure you saw and picked up everything EVERYWHERE

i remember when Morrowind first came out- it was the first time i had played a game like it. As soon as i left the ship i looted everything in the house - candles, dishes, literally EVERYTHING. It was so new to me- i thought i would need them at some point for whatever reason lol. I remember thinking to myself - after the 3rd house i completely looted- WTF AM I DOING lol. I did end up exploring the entire map but i never forced myself to loot everything again. I completed all the quests just like everyone else but i didnt talk to every single creature/NPC in hopes of getting more missions

In terms of it being fun.....i really cant see how anyone would have fun rescuing that stupid girl in Fallout 4 for the 20th time from the SAME DAMN spot lol. Or walking around over burdened becuase you HAVE TO collect every single pistol and mole rat meat from the abandoned Grocery Store. Must be hell on earth for those players that go through it because they feel like they have to TBH

Well, hopefully OCD people know what they sign up to in Fallout games. If their OCD is severe, they hopefully investigate before forking over the money.

Oh my god it's a nightmare.

It takes me SO LONG to clear an area. Sometimes it takes me so long when I enter a building in the area I'm in (for instance, the Cambridge neighborhood) and exit again, ALL the containers have respawned! The first time it happened all I could think was wtf. The fourth time it happened I almost screamed out loud. At three in the morning. With other people sleeping in the house.

I thought tagging the salvage I need and only picking those items up would help, but it didn't. I still pick up every [censored] damn dirty ashtray I [censored] see.

im dead serious when i say that if you manage to control your urges of doing that in this game- it will help you out in the real world as well

obviously im not saying in real life you pick up everything you see and hoard it (unless you do haha) but the traits you display in the game are YOUR traits- they are all one in the same.

Good luck to you ma'am- because i totally understand how this game can feel like a chore that you feel like you HAVE to do

My issue isn't the hoarding or "OCD" problem. Neither of those are traits I posess in real life. My biggest issue (and it's only really the first playthrough) is that I have to experience EVERYTHING and I feel like I'm missing out on something if I dont, for instance, grab that [censored] damn dirty ashtray. And then, like you said, it becomes a chore and I get bored with it really fast and all I can think is: why the hell did I play it Like that? And delve deeper into another aspect of the game my next playthrough.

I think you have a good point about the game traits being a reflection of our real life habits. Too bad it's just as hard to break the in game habits as our real life ones!

I don't really have 'real-life' OCD. I know where everything is in my home and who places it there, no reason to go root'n through it all.

I am the same as Lady Phoenix. I am scared I might miss out on something. Miss out on a conversation, a unique-quest related object, whatever..

Should have seen me play Alan Wake....dark woods...just a flashlight..finding thermos's...UGH!

Hopefully, one day a game will come out to feed your appetites - What i mean is a game that actually has a purpose for everything you encounter in it- as opposed to all the 'filler' in Bethesda games that just make people go nuts lol

Even while playing a linear game and story..I still follow the old habits of searching corners...

This all happened because of Oblivion..

Thanks Elder Scrolls! ;)

haha yea thats Bethesdas trademark in gaming i guess

Also in the Witcher 3 i collected almost everything - mainly because im used to Color Coded loot- and almost everything is coded blue/orange/red or green in the Witcher game- so i thought it would be worth taking. Old habits die hard i guess

Yup this is me 100%. I do this in every single game, but it's the worst with Bethesda games because there's SO. MUCH. STUFF. to do.

Not to mention the little easter eggs and 'fun' useless items that you can find.

How long have you been playing so far, Lady Phoenix?

I don't do anything I don't consider fun in games. If there's something annoying tedious and boring I don't even try it, like most fetch quests in MMOs where you have to go and kill enemies for random drops. Luckily for me Bethesda's games usually give you lots of different options to play, if I ever felt forced to complete a game like this I would just go play something else.

Well....This is kinda a "must-do" in Fallout 4 in order to have any variety in the game, otherwise it's 100% shoot-kill.

Edit: i'm not sure that ocd is same as a completionist/collector

I'm really glad there is so much stuff to do in this game, it means we get excellent value for money with repeat play throughs but with different character building just to see the effect in the game's world.. something I use to do in FO3, NV and Skyrim..

If someone has OCD, then no way is that Bethesda's fault, they should seek professional medical treatment before participating in ANY video game... lucky our human bodies demand that we leave out gaming rigs and do 'natural' things like eating, drinking, sleeping etc.. you know what I mean...lol... an OCD person just has to finish what they are doing at any given moment in time regardless of literally anything else... and that of course includes things like bodily maintenance.

i dont know if 'so much stuff' = better value for a game though

the witcher 3 had a lot of great stuff going for it - but most games have repetitive quests and 'filler' to give them the illusion of depth IMO

baulders gate 2 = 100 hours of pretty awesome and well written gameplay

just cause 2 = 100 hours of the same crap

not really the same but you get the point. i would add fallout 4 to that list but i love the lore so much lol

Ocd at the finest is when you want to make a house look realistic with a kitchen table with plates, silverwear, napkins, and bowls, couch n tv, decorated hutches n tables with lamps you cant use on them. Comfy pillows on everybed, its ebdless, droping off your raw matirials to your workbench And scraping all junk after every location you ramsack. i can spend hours just cleaning up my inventory and decorating my house its insain
