I feel like I play RPG's completely wrong...

Post » Mon Jan 25, 2016 11:37 am

I did it with Skyrim, and now I'm doing it with Fallout 4...

I used to have a certain way of playing RPG's, or to be honest any of the less linear games in general. I would do a fair few playthroughs, and for the examples of Skyrim and a few others I would have a few characters that would follow different paths, I would for example have a Mage that studied at the college before doing the main quest line, as well as a sneak based character who would join the darker factions. The other may be a sword or bow based character who fought in the stormcloak/imperial war. I'd experience the entire game, but from three or four different perspectives.

At least this was the plan. What I ended up doing was getting impatient and created one super over powered character in which I would sink all my game hours into; someone who did the lot, and maxed out pretty much every skill tree. Pretty much broke the immersion but at least I destroyed everything in my path and didn't have to repeat anything.

I've done the same with FO4, and as I grappled with the choice of what faction to go endgame with I couldn't help but think how much more fun it would have been to have a few separate files, and went at things completely differently. Thing is now though, I've already done most of it, explored most buildings, got a ridiculous collection of power armour, done a hell of a lot of side quests and got all my companions levelled. I even branched off a save at a critical moment and chose each faction without starting over so there's no mystery there.

This seems to play to how this sequel was designed though, the larger branches of conversation of the older games aren't there, the game seems to literally throw you in a certain direction from the get go (even tries to sway you towards certain weapons and armour), and due to the voiced character and moulded backstory, it's hard to create another character that stands out from the last.

My question is, who else does what I've done? Makes one beast of the wasteland who ends up literally destroying everything and owning all the goodies? I'm guessing this is more the norm...

Or are you more likely to make several characters and choose completely different paths, essentially playing a different game every time?

I make several different characters and end up making the same story choices. :T there's no wrong way to play a game.

One character at a time. If the game is worth it, I'll do one or more additional playthroughs, making different choices.

On the other hand, mmmmm pancakes.

Mod the game, so you really cant create a beast that destroys everything. Really, when you think about what overpowers the character, its perks + legendary system.

Perk wise, its the 200% buff to damage you can get. It turns even a normal weapon into something silly.

Legendary - Certain traits on guns just break the difficulty. Mainly anything that does +dmg on an automatic or shotgun.

Once those two issues are tweaked, I have a difficult time seeing a godlike character being built. One may of course have to re-adjust beths idea of difficulty to compensate, because they pretty much assume you will get certain items/perks.

The only "wrong" way to play a single-player video game is to not have fun. :)

That said, I typically make many characters in Bethesda's games and do only selected portions of the content with each character. Roleplaying keeps me in line. I try to think like my characters. Each of my characters is different. They have different personalities, different interests, different aptitudes. Taking only those actions that are appropriate to the character I'm playing prevents me from doing everything at once.

My first play through was as a male sneak lone wanderer who used the Overseer's Guardian almost exclusively once he found it. I tinkered with all the factions but sided with the BoS for the end game.

Second play through and I'm playing a female (much better voice acting IMO). She is using pistols with the odd use of a shotgun, I guess you could say she's a cowgirl lol.

Haven't taken any sneak perks, I'm doing a lot more with settlements and farming too, to an extent. I'm going to have her side with the RR, though I've just met them for the first time at the early 30s level. Also doing a few more MM side/radiant quests and I'm at the point of going to the Prydwen for the first time with BoS. Though I'll only side with them for the free vertitaxis and T-60 PA until I double cross them lol.

I'm using companions this time around, even going steady with Curie. Though I've just deposited her at Outpost Zimonja so I can take Piper along for some fun ;) I've also had Nick along for a while and I'm still doing his

Spoiler
find the holotapes quest.

So I'm having a blast this time around doing things quite differently from my first play through. Hell I've only just visited the swampy ground down South for the first time.

Edit: And pancakes. Who doesn't like pancakes?

I have made several characters tried to make them kind of different but they all end up the same. I still have yet to do the MM, Institute or railroad side not appealing to me.

I usually don't finish till about char 3 or 4, and sometimes I don't finish at all.

I don't enjoy a one shotting monster slayer that is max'd out in all areas unless I am done with the game and just exploring everywhere and don't want to be botherd with the locals.

Multiple playthroughs.

My first character was BoS all the way. No MM, RR, or Institute qests done.

Next, I'm thinking of going through RR.

I have a build archetype that I stick with. Once they obtain all of the relevant perks, I hold off from spending points at level up.

I definitely don't want to gorge myself and ruin my appetite for other courses.

I'm only good for one playthrough. I'm at level 75 now. I play with very low armor/very hard difficulty/lots of drugs. I still die from time to time, so I'm definitely not overpowered. You can ALWAYS control your own difficulty level in this game. I would be bored to tears on a second playthrough, so I will FIND stuff to do until I decide that I'm finished, which may be pretty soon.

Multiple characters, I like to see the road not traveled so to speak. It also keeps my interest because I usually end up getting extremely bored with a character as they move past their 30s, even an unoptimized build starts to feel ridiculously powerful. I often wonder how folks end up with level 120+ characters, i mean geez, I can't play one that long.

I chose the middle super beast option. I like the quest lines and exploration in my Bethesda games. Never cared for having a challenge.

Two characters on Survival have completed the MQ. After level 70 I feel like very little can touch me in the way of firefights. So then I start a new character.

I have several (four) characters. Three female and one male. I have pretty much abandoned 3 of them for now, until the game is patched. Currently I am playing one rather super-powered character. So I guess pancakes?

I got my first charactor I really like to Level 14 and made sure all SPECIAL were 4 or over and she had only finished 6 quests and limited exploration. Now I can keep replaying that charactor and do any build/MQ direction I want and not have to repeat the duller 1st steps leading up too Level 14. I find this far better than a full restart

I generally speaking do not finish Bethesda games my multiple characters live them and make their own life and follow their own path. I usually make hundreds of characters in each game.

Like Pseron Wyrd stated there is no wrong way to play a single player game as long as you are having fun.

Also Mods are in development so you can tweak the game for each character and something new like a mission or quest mod or something.

I did that as well, but I am not confidant at all at using that save. Some bugfixes may not be backwards compatible. Like if they ever fix those special vendors you can get for your settlements.
