Female character options as post-release content?

Post » Wed Sep 01, 2010 4:51 pm

I know of quite a few ladies who enjoy coming into FPS games and shooting the crap out of things just as we guys do. Is there any chance of female character options being added in post-release if the game takes off enough?

This is just addressing the disparity in the FPS genre. Female gamers are largely an untapped market due to social stigmas and situations that make it far more socially unacceptable for women to enter into the arena of virtual bloodsport. You get the attention-seeking grrl-gamers, but they aren't who I'm talking about. I believe that all people should be able to play as a character they find acceptable to them on a personal level and that we should all be able to frag one another into a cloud of misty red particulate and assorted gibs with equality.

Exactly. Guy or girl, you still explode into a fine red mist and meaty chunks.

Yes, there is a chance that female characters will be included in the game as post-release DLC.

My 2 cents:
I don't get what the big deal is, I would have bought Brink if it was only female characters (I'm male).

There has been no statement regarding if they are going to do that or not, i dont see why they wouldnt consider it in the long run. But there has already been a thread about the whole female gamer thing. They only reason they didnt put them in is they didnt want to push the game back another year to make all the detailed models and customization for a female body. but i think would be cool none the less if they did release some later.

I think the biggest thing that may stand in the way of female characters is the limitations imposed by console update systems. Sony allows for Steamworks, but I'm not sure if Brink for the PS3 will use that. Then again, the PC version is often where games go to gain their definitive state and polish. No offense meant to the console brethren. It's just that we have a more open platform for post-release content compared to what Microsoft and Sony allow.

Not as huge as you'd think, I'd imagine.

As for a female heavy, I'd imagine you'd do something similar to the male heavy. Maybe something akin to a female troll from Shadowrun. Or yeah, the female Heavy model from TF as Schwarzeis pointed out.

Wait for Brink2. But space wise, they would have had to cut the customization in half to accomodate female characters so all and all I'm glad they didn't make it. Theater mode>female characters imo.

Schwarzeis, you and I both know first hand that NAIL said S.D. are currently working on a new title, that involves "GREEN". And that this title would come out in about 2-3 years from now, it will be awhile before another BRINK comes out, possibly 4-5 years. Unless of course we change that tide and get more users playing.

Recently my girlfriend has seen me watching some videos and checking these forums.

She got really excited for the game when she saw the stuff I was watching and said she couldn't wait until I got it so she could play it on my computer.

But then she asked to see the character customization stuff and asked me if there were female characters. I told her the reasoning why there aren't but she just got bummed out and doesn't really want to play it anymore.

Yeah, I know :P

Green.. I think grass, maybe it's enviroment extremists against riot-cops? GREEN it could be called, it will include golf-elements, hence the name GREEN

And if BRINK is to get a sequel, we'll probably see it in three years, or atleast the announcement

Female gamers have been playing shooters for a long time without letting something like no female characters get in their way. Regardless of six, if your a hardcoe gamer your going to play Brink anyway.

They should have a Female Character option. I know a couple girls that play Fps games and they dont want to be playing as male characters they prefer Female Characters

It's too late for that... It would be a HUGE update, and I don't think it's really possible with consoles... I'm not sure about PC's... I'd say wait until BRINK 2 comes along...
It should be fixed and better than before, considering this was only an experiment of a new idea for the market. (At least for console gaming)

Female character models would be a nice addition, but to be honest I could care less if it was there or not. I'd rather Splash Damage focus on adding more maps, guns, game modes, and missions than focusing on how to get female characters in the game. Even more importantly than that is that Splash focus on making this game bug and lag free. Female characters sounds like something that we'll see in Brink 2. It isn't about just reskinning the male bodies. New animations have to be created, new outfits, etc. It is a ton of work. I could be wrong but I bet if a poll were done on whether people would rather see more gameplay content versus adding female characters to the game, most would vote for more gameplay options (guns, maps, game modes, etc.).

I doubt they will add female models. I'd much rather Splash add maps then develop female models/customization items.

I don't know about you guys, but when I'm playing video games and it lets me make a male character, I don't go...

"HOLY [censored]. THAT MUST BE ME! I'M IN. THE. GAME."

The whole 'playing as a character that's the same gender' thing isn't going to make you feel more involved in the game any more than playing as a male character does. If it does make you feel more involved, you may have some growing up to do. It's hardly important to make a female characters in the grand scheme of things that need to be updated and fixed with the game.

Games like Portal and Mirror's Edge both have female character and are some of the best games that have come out lately, as a man I don't care in the slightest that I'm playing as a woman because it's not important in a FPS. More importantly, think about it this way, if you came into the room halfway through a match and started playing, how would you ever know you were playing as a female character? You wouldn't, because it's not important to the gameplay in the slightest. Don't let your gender obsessions get in the way of BRINK becoming the game it was meant to be!

Think about the time you'd see them rather spend on BRINK; Making female characters, or adding new levels, weapons, maps, updates and trying to get the online play to actually run smoothly (or at all if you live in Australia). Once you have your female characters, then what? You'll still have very little in the game to do and then you'll complain about that.

wow some of your guys comments i cant believe, I am a female and love FPS's i play Cod, halo and battlefield i know two of those don't let you play as females but i don't care because there is no real character customization anyway. however brink put alot into character customization and like any other game that has this much customization for you character there is always a female char, that is why i think it is bull that they didnt put the female in. The truth of the matter is there are plenty of female gamers out there and brink ignored us completely and felt that we weren't important enough to cater too, well then brink is not worth my 60 bucks then either... no its not childish and yes it is very very important, this day and age they need to focus equally on male and female gamers. I know if they made a game with all girls of course guys would not complain they dominate the gameing industry already thats why it would not effect them, but it was the other way around you guys would be just as upset as us grils.... All we want is a female avatar it is not alot to ask for.

I wish they could have afforded to fit in female customization.
I hope they can in the future.
They couldn't afford it when making the game (it is really a lot of expensive work - damn artists need to learn to work for peanuts I tell you!).
That's pretty much all that can be said on the topic.

They would have to make all new character models for everything, faces, girly parts, they'd have to change all current clothes for women and everything new they made they would have to make to fit 3 more body types rather then just the 3 sizes. So no, i'd prefer maps over boobies. And I don't understand the need for both sixes, I wouldn't complain if it was all girls it doesnt matter. As stated above, girl or boy, they will be red mist and meaty chunks when im done with them.
