Female gamers want female characters (yesh, I read the FAQ)

Post » Fri Jul 23, 2010 3:11 am

Hey all!
First of all congrats on Brink!
I tried it at Gamescom 2010 and it was love at first sight!

I really liked playing the multiplayer, loved the feeling and environment, the ability to climb etc. (SMART) and TOTALLY loved the characters style.
Being a girl though I totally missed female characters!!

I know, I read the FAQs and really understand... however, what about a female character expansion for later release?
You know, DLC or something like that?
Pretty please with sugar on top *blinking puppy eyes* ????

Well, just food for thought, I know you definitely have other priorities right now but if anyone would put a note somewhere in the Brink HQ that would be terrific :)!

Thanks & cheerio!
There's plenty of great stuff to play until Brink arrives but still I'm already looking forward to it!!!

I don't think so because it's weird if a huge guy with a shogun blows a hole through a woman's stomach. No sixism intended!

Since I only play female characters when I have a choice, and I tend to avoid games without females (who I like and empathize with, that is) I agree with the general request.

On the other hand, in reality, it all depends on the player. Some female players only play male characters (AlienSlof, for example, has stated this in interviews). Some male players only play female characters. In fact, the latter are an entire genre in Japan, and that's one reason why there have always been so many Japanese games with heroines. It's sort of like how plenty of girls follow works aimed at guys (DragonBall for example) or plenty of guys follow works targeted for girls (almost anything by CLAMP, for example).

So, basically, companies (good companies, anyway) don't want to stereotype the player's tastes, and that's probably a good thing. :)

thats the oddest answer possible, for...
... a ) i haven't seen any characeters blowing holes in one another in brink
b ) we've seen several female characters in shooters, it's neven been a problem, (UnReal, boderlands, u name'em)

my theory would be way off in the other direction. i think they reached a critical point while desgning the three body types for female characters. just imagine the skinny, the medium and the heavy. i guess they kept looking for some cool looking archetypes. keeping in mind that every player wants to play the most coolest character he can think of, heavy females are not the first choice. so i guess they cut it.

if they can make it work i'm happy to see it as DLC

TBH I like playing as a girl or guy which ever I feel like but the thing is that hitboxes would have to be changed, girls would probably get smaller hitboxes and it would make it unfair, unless you play a fat chick and in that case I don't want a bunch of fat chicks bunny hopping around and kicking my ass. I would like to play a chick as an alt because I am neutral, I am not picky with my characters six, so I pick guy girl guy girl guy girl.

it has been brought up several times, hereby i ask everyone to take it easy, and try very hard not to insult anyone

it would be a very nice addition as DLC(preferably free, call it an [essential] update)

and i want to add i appreciate you read the FAQ

@Thomas

yea good point there...

Best would probably be to restrickt female chars to light and medium. (then again, I think that art department could even make bigger girls look nice ;) )

I'm personally neutral on that.
However I can see that there will be some players not playing brink for that special reason
(since it's a very, or even the most personal shooter out there), so adding them in the future would sure be a good thing.

I'm playing BRINK regardless, I usually just look at the gameplay and fun factor to chose whether to play a game however I would really enjoy females in brink because I feel they'd look totally kickass (and sure, I'd love to have a look-a-like character for myself)!

Also, I suggested the DLC thing because in the FAQs they mentioned it was very hard for them to chose to not include female characters (and yep, free would be cool but I'd pay a few bucks for it to support the effort, hoping that the P2P won't be too harsh on me, my connection svcks and especially so in P2P).

Truth be told multiplayers that include female characters are still scarce and it's really a pity.
I also played Killzone 3 and Crysis at GamesCom and, you know, they don't have female characters either but I still think that female characters in BRINK would totally rock, even more than in other games!

Cheerio,

Making heavy females isn't a big deal except from an artwork stand point. You could mini-mech them in exo-suits as just one example of a route to go. Art wise there are lots of options to go with. Devs are only limited by their imaginations, and since that's a strength of a game designer I don't think that is the issue. It would be a massive amount of work to add in all the artwork. Hit boxes etc, or heavy females looking weird shouldn't really be a problem, there's always solutions for those things. Time seems like it would be more the issue, deadlines always create limitations in any job.

My first post, though I've been lurking for a little while.

Firstly; If the OP is Aery Soul, (as name and avatar suggest), I'm a huge fan of your 3D art skills, if there is ever a facility for player created art assets in this game it'll be the envy of all.

Back to topic though, I've been a bit mystified by the design decision to leave out females. I can understand the argument for being able to spend more more time on customisation for male only models but that seems a little trivial to leave females out entirely. The notion of hit boxes and having to balance females and males in combat just doesn't sit right with me. Maybe it's because I'm a short guy and I know a lot of women bigger than me, my wife for starters, but why should there be a fifference at all? Ability is not limited by the physical in a computer game, the appearance of the players within the field of combat is immaterial.

I would have no problem with female models having identical hitbox and collision parameters in the game. So what if the female Light model is short and slim, I wouldn't expect an advantage for playing one, nor would I expect it to be harder to hit than the male Light body type.

For what ever reason, women won't be represented in the game world. I think this is a crying shame but there's nothing we can do about it, sadly. If there was a petition to get them added, count me as having signed it though.

EDIT: I forgot to mention; I don't see female Heavy body types being a problem either. There are plenty of female body builders to refernce and some are actually quite feminine if you can get past the huge biceps. (Admittedly I'd be a little aprehensive about dating a woman that could snap me in half, but hey, that's just me.)

I was disappointed to see that women weren't included either. At first I was hoping for a later DLC as well but given the amount of art resources necessary to do this right I don't imagine we'll see women added with anything short of a full-sized expansion.

Gamer’s Heaven interviewed Richard Ham and he said he hoped both genders could be included in their next game (I'd link to it but it contains a small amount of profanity). It was nothing definite but its good to know this is something they do want to do even if they couldn't manage it for Brink.

Finally someone who reads. Welcome to the site and I too would like to see females in the DLC.

The devs have already have models for all body types for females. No reason not to have heavy girls, some I assume like to rock with their minigun out.

The devs have covered the reasons behind this on more than one occasion and its more than hitboxes and taking away from male customization. Men and females move differently and also they want to actually make them look like females. Meaning they want to do it right or not at all, since it takes more than slapping a pair of (censored) to a male avatar to make it female.

As it has been said above please keep the conversation civil, everyone is entitled to the opinions.

The hitbox would potentially be a lot different and give those playing as females a distinct advantage.

Firstly, how was my post not civil?
I said I knew why the Devs have decided what they have, I simply stated that I found it a bit mystifying. I too have read the FAQ and the previous threads relating to this topic.

My post said I'd love females to be in, not contradicting the OP in any way or belittling her opinion. I stated my preference as a gamer but I respected the design decision of the Devs even if I didn't particularly agree. I don't recall being disrespectful to the OP, any other poster in this thread or to the development team. More than perhaps can be said for your post.

Way to welcome new forum members.

I was not targeting you in particular it was just the end of my post and I wanted to re-emphasize that point. Sorry for the misunderstanding. I was saying it in general terms and not as a response to your post.

@Wraith

sure it could work, but then again you have to think about the work you have to put in every body type ;)

idk how intelligent the clothing systhem is but I could imagin that a lot of fine tuning has to be made.
So you could simply say girls are light and medium only and save 1/3 of the work ;)

usually such simplifications increase the chance that such implementations are added. (at least that's what I observed)

I am a boy, yet i totally agree with this. Considering BRINK is heavily based on customization, female characters almost seem mandatory! It would most likely add a wider spectrum to interested game players. Love BRINK. Can't wait for it either way.

I can understnd the apeal of playing with a female character, but really does it matter that much? The devs had stated why they don't have female avatars so theres no need to bicker about it.

Instead why not figure out how to make more feminine looking characters? A female form may come along the lines later, but for now work with what you got.

I suggested this a while back.

The problem with this is it would require a lot of work. So much work and resources that they would have to charge for it.

Well, for everyone reading this thread, not all girls care, my girlfriend, her sister and many other woman i know dont care.

Although it sounds like a good idea, imagine a heavy female...it would look a little funny. Also every girl ive asked would rather all the clothing options on guys rather than half with both males and females
