Feng Shui - An item placement helper for Fallout 3
====================

What's New in v0.9.1
====================
New Features:
- Object Scaling. Use Shift + Trans/Rotation Mode to enter Scaling Mode. Use +/- x, y, or z to change object scale, Reset (while in Scale Mode) sets scale back to 1 (normal).

- Rotate 45 Degrees. Hold Shift while in Rotation Mode to rotate objects in increments of 45 degrees.
- Optional Hotkey Menu Access. Use the console command "
StartQuest FengShuiMenuAccess" to enable hotkey access to the Feng Shui Book menu (default key "P").
- Customizable Hotkey Controls. See the included file "Feng Shui - Keymap Plugin Instructions.txt" for full details on creating a custom keymapping plugin (recommended method) or changing control settings through the in-game console.

Additions/Changes:
- Added Y-Rotation Ring.
- Added "Locking" sound when locking objects.
- Added FOSE version check.
- Clutter Box added to book menu (still has default hotkey as well).

A) Description
====================
Feng Shui gives you precise control and locking abilities when it comes to arranging movable objects in-game. If you find getting a Nuka-Cola to stand up with Z-grabbing... frustrating, Feng Shui may be for you.

In addition to precise control over an object's position and orientation, it can be locked in place indefinitely, even in places it would not remain normally due to collision with other objects or lack of support. This means you can arrange items very close together, make them appear to actually rest on a surface (instead of floating above it in many cases), mount them on walls, or even suspend them in mid-air.

You can also further adjust a locked item at any time, or unlock it if you wish.

Objects manipulated or locked by Feng Shui are never modified in any way, so you need not worry about any of these items not behaving as otherwise intended.

*Please note: Any system for manipulating objects in 3D will feel awkward at first and take some getting used to. Please take a moment to look over the Movement Controls in this readme, study the Control Diagram, and view any demo videos before using Feng Shui. This will greatly improve your initial experience.

B) Requirements
====================
- Fallout 3
- Fallout Script Extender (FOSE) v1.2 beta3 or later - *see below
- (Recommended) Fallout Mod Manager (FOMM) - http://www.fallout3nexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=640
- If not using FOMM: ArchiveInvalidation Invalidated! (AII!) - http://www.fallout3nexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=944

*IMPORTANT: There's evidence to suggest Feng Shui requires FOSE v1.2 beta3 to prevent crashes in certain situations (not v1.2 beta2 as previously stated in the readme). This version has not yet been publicly released on the http://fose.silverlock.org/, so unless you downloaded it from the FOSE discussion thread on the BGS forums, you don't have it. (Your current version of FOSE is specified in the file fose_readme.txt in your "Fallout 3" folder.)

Download FOSE v1.2b3 here: http://fose.silverlock.org/beta/fose_v1_2_beta3.7z

C) Installation
====================
1) Extract the archive into your "Fallout 3\Data" folder.
2) Using FOMM, activate the plugin "Feng Shui.esp" in your load order anywhere after all ESM files.

:: Uninstall
1) Deactive and remove the plugin.
2) Remove the folders "Fallout 3\Data\Meshes\FengShui" and "Fallout 3\Data\Textures\FengShui".

D) Usage
====================
The Feng Shui Book
--------------------
When loading a game for the first time with Feng Shui installed, a book ("Feng Shui for Dummies") is added to your inventory, appearing in the "Aid" category. You'll use this book to begin and end Feng Shui sessions - you can either "Equip" it while in inventory or "Activate" it while on the ground to access the menu.

To start a session, choose the option "Begin placing items". Now as your crosshair hovers over anything that is normally Z-grabbable, that object will pulse with a blue glow to indicate it can be manipulated with the Feng Shui controls. You can now arrange any number of items, and further adjust/unlock previously locked items. When you're done, select "Stop placing items" from the book menu. A Feng Shui session will also end automatically if you move too far from the spot at which it was started (about 50ft/15m), or if you enter combat.

To add another Feng Shui book to your inventory at any time, enter the console and type:
StartQuest FengShuiAddBook

Movement Controls
--------------------
All movement controls are on the keyboard numpad. In addition to reviewing this section, please use the Control Diagram included with these files as a reference.

NumEnter: Engage/Release control - (toggles Feng Shui control of a valid object)

Num4: -x value
Num6: +x value

Num2: -y value
Num8: +y value

Num3: -z value
Num9: +z value

Num+: Toggle Visible Axes
Num0: Toggle Translation/Rotation Mode - (with Shift, enters Scale Mode)
Num.: Cycle Nudge Mode Options
Num5: Reset Rotation/Scale - (in Rotation Mode, sets all angles to zero; in Scale Mode, sets scale to 1)

Num*: Lock/Unlock - (note that Locking also Releases control of the object)

Selection Colors
--------------------
Blue - valid, targeted object
Yellow - currently controlled object, not locked
Red - currently controlled object, locked (note: you can still move a locked object around with the Feng Shui controls!)

Locking and Unlocking in more detail
----------------------------------------
When you first "cast" Feng Shui on an object, it's glow will change from blue to yellow, indicating it is under Feng Shui control and no longer subject to game physics. You can now precisely manipulate the item with the FS controls. If you release control of the item (NumEnter) goes back to normal game physics and will settle or drop as usual if not supported.

If instead of releasing control on the yellow glowing object you lock it (Num*), it will remain fixed in place indefinitely. If you wish to adjust the locked item's position further, simply cast Feng Shui on it again (target then NumEnter). It will now be pulsing red, indicating it's locked status, but you can use the FS controls just as before. Releasing control (NumEnter) will leave it in its new locked position.

If you want to unlock an already locked item - to allow it to settle naturally, or for whatever reason - engage Feng Shui control of it again, then press the lock toggle again (Num*). The object will change from pulsing red to yellow, and when you release control (NumEnter) it will behave normally again.

Another way to remove locked items is to activate them, taking them into the player inventory, as you would normally.

Book Menu Features
--------------------
"Begin Placing Items"/"Stop Placing Items" - This activates or deactivates the ability to use Feng Shui controls. Note that you don't have to remember to choose "Stop Placing Items" when you're done using Feng Shui - if you move more than about 50ft/15m from where you activated it, or move between interior and exterior cells, it will deactivate automatically.

"Highlight Locked Items" (toggle) - When active, any Feng Shui locked items in the currently rendered scene will be indicated with a steady red glow, and the number of those items is displayed in a status message.

"Unlock Items" - Will indicate the number of Feng Shui locked items in the currently rendered scene, and prompt you to unlock them all at once. Those objects will immediately settle or drop, subject to normal game physics.

"Open Clutter Box" - Summons the Feng Shui Clutter Box, containing a large assortment of things to decorate with, including rare and new objects.

"Read Book (Help)" - Displays basic instructions on how to use Feng Shui.

E) Decorating Tips
====================
- Use the visible axes, especially while in Rotation Mode
- Use Nudge Mode for fine adjustment
- The "Zero Rotation" reset control (Num5) can be handy, especially if trying to place item in a stacked or other organized manner
- Z-grab to lift/carry your item near where you want to place it, then engage Feng Shui control (without releasing Z-grab first)
- While you have an item under control, you can still move around to view it from different angles
- If you're unsure of an item's placement or you're arranging multiple items close together, keep them locked until you're done and satisfied - you unlock or adjust them further at any time

F) Extra Features
====================
- Show locked item list: For debugging purposes, the list of locked items in the current scene can be output to the console screen. This can be done at any time during a Feng Shui session by pressing Shift+NumMinus (Num-). A VATS beep will indicate the list was printed. You can also get the same list by typing "
StartQuest FengShuiShowList" in the console.

- Feng Shui Clutter Box: (Now also on the book menu.) Don't have anything nice to decorate with? Take a look in the magic Clutter Box! During a Feng Shui session (but not while controlling an object) press Shift+NumPlus (Num+) and you'll have access to all the game clutter and more. To avoid potential problems, there are no scripted or quest items in there (well, there shouldn't be), but there are copies of any that have unique models. Don't put anything in this container that you don't want gone forever, as it resets and respawns each time it's opened. And don't use it to cheat, ok?

- Bottlecaps for decorating: Normally you can't drop bottlecaps from your inventory. Now you can by pressing Shift+NumDecimal (Num.). Like the Clutter Box, this only works while Feng Shui is active but while you're not controlling an object.

- Easy replacement books: To add another Feng Shui book to your inventory at any time, enter the console and type:
StartQuest FengShuiAddBook

G) Warnings
====================
Some walls, furniture, and other objects may have larger collision boxes than you realize. If you use Feng Shui to lock an item very close to one of these, it's possible it could be mostly or completely inside the invisible collision box, preventing access to the locked item by normal means. One specific example is the wall behind the Bobblehead Display Stand in the Megaton Player House.

Because of this, before you begin arranging and locking items somewhere (especially if planning on mounting things on walls), I recommend using the console command
ToggleCollisionGeometry (tcg) to view the collision boundaries in the area (entering tcg again returns your view to normal). This can help you avoid problem areas, or at least be aware you'll have to take extra steps to get a locked item out of such a spot.

The simplest way to unlock an inaccesible item is to use the "Unlock Items" option from the book menu, however any other locked items in the scene will also be released. If you want to retain the other locked items follow the steps below (this only seems to work on items you've dropped at some point, not items that originated in the cell):

1) Open the console, and see if you can select the object by clicking on it with the mouse cursor so the object's name and reference ID is shown at the top of the screen. If directly clicking on it doesn't seem to work, try using the mouse wheel - this cycles through a few references which may include the object in question.
2) If you can't get the reference to show up this way, use the "Show locked item list" debug feature as described above ("F) Extra Features" section).
3) Once you have the object's reference ID, in the console type the following two commands (substitute "RefID" with the actual reference ID):
prid RefID
disable

4) The object should have disappeared. Close the console for a moment, then open it again. Type the following two commands (you can use up arrow twice to get the
prid command again):
prid RefID
enable
moveto player

5) When you close the console again, the object should appear near your feet.

You can also try using the the console command
ToggleCollision (tcl) which may allow you to move into a position so you can target the locked item with Feng Shui - you can then move it back to a safe location.

H) Known Conflicts & Issues
====================
:: Known Conflicts
- This will conflict with any mod that also attempts to use any of the same Numpad hotkeys during GameMode. Refer to the included file "Feng Shui - Keymap Plugin Instructions.txt" to customize the Feng Shui controls if necessary.

:: Known Issues
- See the section "G) Warnings", for notes about retrieving inaccesible locked items.
- If using FOSE v1.2b2, saving during an active Feng Shui session may cause a crash. Updating FOSE to v1.2b3 should fix this issue (http://fose.silverlock.org/beta/fose_v1_2_beta3.7z). Reports of this or any other issue resolved with FOSE v1.2b3 are appreciated.
- If rescaling objects enabled by a Parent Reference (such as items that are part of a House Theme), their collision boundaries will not be reset. This can be avoided by taking then dropping the item before scaling.
- A pre-release tester reported a crash when moving an object into the floor (in a Player House mod), but I was unable to replicate or find cause for this.

I) Credits
====================
Feng Shui benefits from two key methods used in beancounter's "Decorator Assistant" (Oblivion) and TGBlank's "Blank's Magic Hand", respectively. If I had not been able to examine how each of these mods work, it would have taken much longer to develop Feng Shui, and quite likely it would not work as well as it now does. Thanks to both beancounter and TGBlank for creating these mods and making them available to the modding community.

Further thanks to beancounter, as his Oblivion mod "Decorator Assistant" was my original inspiration to attempt this project - in fact, the first mod I had ever thought about trying to make, before I had even downloaded the GECK.

Special thanks to Cipscis, for - as always - allowing me to expound upon all the problems I encounter with my code or the FO3 engine, and if in the process I haven't already figured things out on my own, for then giving me a solution or thoughts on what to try.

Thanks to titan357, Balok, and especially BulletSix for helpful pre-release testing and feedback.

Thanks to Ian Patterson (ianpatt), Stephen Abel (behippo) and Paul Connelly (scruggsywuggsy the ferret) for the Fallout Script Extender (FOSE). Feng Shui wouldn't be nearly as nice without some of the things they've made possible through their work.

Silly question time :whistle:

Since this requires the keyboard numpad, will it work on a laptops that don't have this set up, by using the function key?

Not that silly of a question :)

I'm almost certain it won't as it is right now. I'm assuming you mean you press a fn key in order to toggle NumLock, which then turns a grid of standard keys into a virtual numpad, right? I'm pretty sure that http://fose.silverlock.org/fose_command_doc.html#GetKeyPress wouldn't see any difference in those keys whether your laptop had NumLock on or off, and the game isn't aware of the state of NumLock, (or CapsLock for that matter). And even it would be reliable to try tracking every time you toggled NumLock, I'm not sure GetKeyPress would work for that on a laptop since it's a function key combo.

If you wanted to change the controls right now, you'd have to go into the scripts in the GECK and replace the http://fose.silverlock.org/fose_command_doc.html#DirectX_Scancodes in a number of places to the ones you want. It wasn't a priority for this version, but perhaps in a future update I can make it easier to modify the controls if you wished.

I am happy with that answer :) It wouldn't be a problem for me to get into the GECK and replace a few of the keys in the script. You are still my hero for doing this, and have inspired me to dust off my Clep Home and revamp it (loonnng over due). Many Thanks :bowdown:

Great, FO3 really needed a mod like this!

I hope for TES V Bethesda finally understands that we need advanced item placement features... Even being able to hold a certain button to make dragging the item rotate it instead would be great.

But it'll probably be left up to the modders again. ;)

Would it be possible to have a keyboard key trigger the options menu rather than a book?

Would it be possible to have a keyboard key trigger the options menu rather than a book?

Sure, I could make a version that works that way. I hadn't done that because it didn't seem was necessary to have a script running continuously in the background just to watch for when you wanted to decorate - it's not exactly a gameplay feature. And I just really thought the concept of referring to your book on Feng Shui to help you arrange items made a certain amount of game-sense and fit with the setting. Alright, "Feng Shui for Dummies" doesn't fit the game setting - that was a quick texture I made almost a year ago when thinking about this, intended to be temporary. I'll be making a custom book design that will fit more with the game style, and possibly even tie things in a little with FO3 lore (what with the Chinese presence around D.C. and all).

Anyway, what I'll do is add a quest you can start from the console that will enable a hotkey for access to the FS menu. No need for a separate version.

But there's also no reason you can't have more than one book, and if the only place you really use it is in your Player house or wherever you can leave a copy there and not carry one around. Hopefully with a new cover, people might even want to display it. :)

I mentioned a number of things in the comment thread over on the Nexus - I'll copy that here:
To all - Many thanks for all the positive response so far! After one day, it's much greater than I'd imagined I'd see in a week or more.

To address the two most common concerns in more detail:

* Alternate/Configurable hotkey controls
I intend to do something about this, so please be patient. I'll be starting a new topic to discuss this separately as well.

* Manipulating fixed objects (and possibly corpses)
http://thenexusforums.com/index.php?showtopic=187010&st=0&p=1625076&#entry1625076, I had planned to extend Feng Shui to fixed objects, but since it's potentially game-breaking and there are some other issues to be worked out, it wasn't a priority for this version. Again, I fully intend to add this in a future version.

In regards to corpses, I wasn't completely correct about them in that previous post. Regular movable statics with rag-doll physics (like teddy bears and skeletons) work the way I described, but there's some peculiarities with actor corpses. I'll have to see if there's anything I can do to make it work for them in a nicer way, because as is, it wouldn't be much more helpful than Z-grabbing.

Some other features I plan to add:

- A finer level of Nudge Mode

- Rotations in increments of 45 degrees

- Object scaling (thanks to Cipscis for the suggestion!)

- Option to align the currently selected item to another object

- A "Recall" or "Undo" option (mainly needed if moving fixed objects is available)

- Group object manipulation (maybe)

I know I can often be somewhat verbose, but it's because I try to address ahead of time much of what people might be thinking about. Look over the readme again, if you haven't already - you might learn some new things. ;)

Hey...

When I started working on this, I was looking for some way to use the mouse for rotation, and concluded you couldn't.

I read your post again and it dawned on me that yesterday I accidentally found a way... I think this will be nice.

ok it started working but now it wont. Half my keys wont work now, and quite a few things are surrounded by this white barrier. Ill try deactivating it and reactivating it to see if that works for now.

EDIT: Ok founda glitch. while placing items, if you pick one up, or open a container it will glitch. youll have to leave the game, deactivate it, reload oyur save, save over it and reactivate the mod.

Also its clashing with Primary needs which is a part of FWE. the keybinding won't change and everytime you try to activate an object the Config menu pops up.

dragoonofdeath - I could use some more information here.

To start with, do you have something else using the same keys as Feng Shui at the same time (in GameMode)? If so, then yes, it will conflict as stated in the readme. If you're not able to remap the keys from the other mod, then you'll have to wait until I add some other control options.

ok it started working but now it wont. Half my keys wont work now, and quite a few things are surrounded by this white barrier. Ill try deactivating it and reactivating it to see if that works for now.

I have no idea what this "white barrier" could be. Maybe a screenshot would help.

EDIT: Ok founda glitch. while placing items, if you pick one up, or open a container it will glitch.

Can you elaborate a little?

Also its clashing with Primary needs which is a part of FWE. the keybinding won't change and everytime you try to activate an object the Config menu pops up.

You can change the PN status hotkey in the FWE menu.

Also are you getting a config menu? That would only happen if you are still using an old version of FWE, in the latest version only a status window will pop up.

When I wrote improved positioning for morrowind, I included an ingame option to remap controls. It was actually a fairly easy one to do, and pretty short. :D Would be an extremely useful feature.

I am grabbing this version though, and am going to thoroughly enjoy being able to place things in my home, without having the havoc bomb blow things all over the house.

Thank You.
