Feral Ghouls - should they be in Fallout 4?

Post » Thu Nov 26, 2015 7:37 pm

As you may have noticed in the trailer at https://youtu.be/GE2BkLqMef4?t=1m49s the player is being attacked by a bunch of ghouls whose movement is clearly animalistic thus it's pretty much a confirmation that the devs intend to keep Feral Ghouls in F4. Personally I always thought it was the worst addition Bethesda has made to the franchise, right up there with the vampires, I mean it just feels like they figured every game they make has to have vamps and zombies in complete disregard of the lore. Undead were always the subject of jokes in the Fallout franchise, the ghouls themselves are a pun on the whole zombie thing (now needed more than ever with all the zombie hype still around). Putting in almost actual zombies means someone doesn't understand the dark humour of the series. For me it was one of the things that in the end created this feeling that I'm not playing a "real Fallout" (btw, the thing that tipped the scale was the utter uselessnes of power armour).

Ok, so that's about it for my rant, what do you think? Is there anyone in the community who thinks the same?

There's never been actual Vampires in Fallout. Ever. And feral ghouls have always been apart of the Fallout universe, Bethesda just started calling the mindless ghouls from previous Fallout games, Feral Ghouls..

I've always hated feral ghouls, because they're just rage zombies from 28 Days Later.

People who's bodies and minds have rotted through extensive radiation poisoning should not sprint faster than an Ethiopian gold medalist.

Besides the "Family" in FO3 there haven't been, but those weren't ACTUAL vampires. Just as Dr. Strangelove just pointed out.

I think there would be complaints if they were removed, since its well established lore.....you may as well ask should (non feral) ghouls be in the game, or super mutants, etc.

There aren't actual vampires, just crazy people who think they are vampires.

As for feral ghouls, it's as close to zombies as I hope we ever get in FO so I'm okay with them. Seems like a natural state that many ghouls would resort to.

Err you know the "family" in FO3 was a joke right? They were not actually vampires. They were cannibals and that head guy created the vampire mythos as a means to control their behaviour so they wouldn't become a threat to the area unlike the other cannibals in the game which hunted people. The whole vampire motif was a joke for the player.

Feral ghouls are in they are part of the lore nothing will change it and they are not new.

People who think they're vampires are the worst, they're an utter embarrassment to actual vampires such as myself.

I like them, ya cant run around in circles and cling to the old games, I think they where a nice terror in the dark places of the waste and in my mind felt like a natural progression for a ghoul.

They weren't technically vampires, but there was this group of people in F3 that called themselves http://fallout.wikia.com/wiki/The_Family and pretty much acted like vampires (I think they even called themselves that at times).

Ghouls in previous Fallout were mostly highly intelligent, I actually don't recall any mindless ones and if there were they probably lost their minds in a similar fashion as normal people would as well in the wastelands. To be fair though, I'm not opposed to the sole idea of there being some mindless ghouls, but rather to the implemantion which is basically a copy paste from Elder Scrolls' zombies.

I'd love it if they ditched feral ghouls and brought back ghouls that are just falling apart crazy people. They should be slower and weaker than human enemies in practically every way.

No, not all ghouls in Fallout were intelligent, they had what they literally called at the time, Mindless ghouls. You might want to play through F1 and F2 again. http://fallout.wikia.com/wiki/Mindless_ghoul

To be honest, I was never sure if The Family was a joke, it didn't feel like it or just not the way I would expect a joke to be delivered in a Fallout game. As for ferals, they're only part of the lore since F3 and so far we don't even know if Bethesda considers NV canon since it was made by a subcontractor.

We need feral ghouls honestly; it makes the Wasteland an even more dangerous place to wander.

The ones in 1:49 honestly look like something other than ghouls. Their flesh is too clean and pale. But their tattered clothing isn't.

The mindless ghouls from F1 were different in some key ways, they attacked the player but a lot of ghouls in Necropolis did due to them being afraid of the soft skinned. They were also treated by the other ghouls more like autistic children or senile elders rather than shunned as in F3. And the ones in F2 I believe they could use guns so that would mean they weren't techincally mindless. Plus there's the issue that "mindless" does not equal "feral", the latter being indicative of agressive behaviour.

A classic case of redesign, its not like they would settle for just lifting the feral ghoul model from 3 and just spiffy up the textures, those are Boston brand Feral ghouls for sure.

The Family don't think they are vampires they're just cannibals who instead of eating human meat they drank human blood.

As a side note, shouldn't the title be "should there be feral ghouls in Fallout 5?" Since ya know we clearly seen them so they are gonna be in 4, however much ya don't like it. With the still just a dream 5 there is still hope to actually make a point.
