Festivals & Holidays?

Post » Wed Mar 30, 2011 8:55 am

I've noticed something in Morrowind and Oblivion, There hasn't been any festivals or holidays. So as your enjoying the imersive experiance. Watching NPCs live their life, when you realise they don't celebrate anything; not even a harvest celebration. Obviously it wouldn't seem special if it's too often, or if it isn't often enough. Do you guys want Festivals or Holidays in Skyrim?

EDIT: I haven't played Areno or Daggerfall, so I didn't realise they had festivals and holidays.

I've noticed something in the elder scrolls games, There hasn't been any festivals or holidays.

You should notice Daggerfall then.

Well if you'd played the past games (Arena & Daggerfall) you'd know they did have holidays and festivals. They didn't mean too much, but they were still pretty neat.

Festivals and holidays in Skyrim? Sure, why not?

Yeah you really should try them -- at least Daggerfall.

And some of them were quite useful. Like the Merchant's Festival...the one day of the year when all the merchants sell their wares for half-price. So I wandered around a couple of towns that day seeking out the weakest merchants I could find...those with the poorest bartering skills around. I wheeled and dealed and bought books in bulk; loading up all 75 pounds of my cart's carrying capacity with them, before going off to share all this newly acquired knowledge with the rest of the world -- for a fee and a hefty profit, of course.

Anyway a full list of the holidays and their descriptions can be found http://www.uesp.net/wiki/Daggerfall:Holidays if you're interested.

Maybe a farmers market on certain days during certain seasons. Trader markets where merchants from all over Skyrim/Empire would trade/sell rare items not to mention fill the roads.Even religious holidays would add immersion.

Would be kinda funky. Like the carnivale in Assassins Creed 2. That section was cool.

Of course I'd like that kinda things, great for atmosphere. The only impediment that I can see here is the technical limitations of pulling off consistent "crowds". Having bustling streets, busy open air markets, religious ceremonials, riots, festivals would require some good numbers of people, and with all this detailed schedules for each of them, I think it's not that realistic to hope for gatherings of 80-100 people. If we get "crowds" like the cheering one in Bruma... I don't know, it's rather a pathetic simulation.

I've played both of these old games, and i really miss the Festivals and Holidays. They bought a lot of immersion to Tamriel.
