A Few Misconceptions That I'd Like To Clear Up

Post » Wed Mar 30, 2011 11:59 am

Browsing throughout the forums, I notice many comments that are wrong pertaining to the actual information that is currently out. I'd just like to clear up a few of those misconceptions and hopefully give people a clearer insight on Skyrim :) Oh, and feel free to post any other misconceptions that you deem necessary to address. (Yes I realize many of you already know this, this is just for the new people.)

"For every dragon you kill, you get a dragonshout."
-Actually, for every dragon you slay whilst on your travels, you learn the ability to find a word for a dragonshout on one of the various dragonwalls scattered throughout Skyrim. 3 words make up 1 shout. And of course, there's 20 shouts.

"Here's my idea for how the level scaling should work. What do you guys think?"
-It's already confirmed that the level scaling will be very similar to that of Fallout 3. There's no need to discuss on what it might be like, since we already know. But do we know the details? Now that's something to speculate on ;)

"Ugh, why dont the graphics on X screenshot look great? I want Crysis graphics!"
- First of all, all of the screens/gameplay footage are taken on the Xbox 360. That's an equivalent of medium graphic settings on the PC. Second, it's an open world game; the level of detail/complexity on it is astronomical compared to linear shooters, like Crysis. So the graphics will not be like Crysis (but close.) Third, all of the screens are taken during the pre-alpha phase, the alpha phase, or the beta phase; They are not finished with the game yet! Fourth, the consoles have reached their graphical capability, thus making so you won't get any better graphics than that until new consoles come out.

"Wow, we're a prisoner again at the start of the game? Why not something new?"
- Remember that starting out as a prisoner has always been a tradition in TES. Just because it's the same general idea of a beginning does not mean it won't be a unique experience compared to the previous games. We are about to be executed! How cool is that? We also get saved from Esbern, the last of the Blades! Sounds very different than tagging along the Emperor in a secret passage way while being ambushed by a cult in Oblivion So cheer up!

"Can we really make a difference here on the forums?"
-At the moment? Sadly, no. It's already too late in the development process for Bethesda to all of a sudden add more ideas in-game from the forums currently. Buuuut, let's think for a moment; We HATED Oblivion's level scaling right? Well guess what, Bethesda is changing it. Why? Because we hated it. The combat in Oblivion was pretty dull huh? Yeah, Bethesda is changing that too. Why? Because we said it was dull. You see? The fans of TES clearly do make a significant difference in the development of FUTURE games, so keep on posting!

You can add that Todd Howard said in an interview that spears are definitely out at this time.

(I know, I know, I want them, too, but he said what he said.)

Sadly this thread may become lost as numerous other misconception based threads fill our forums. :(

You may want to edit that. You absorb their soul and that gives you the ability to learn a word when you find it on the wall somewhere. You don't actually learn anything from the slain dragon.

Yes we can too. Maybe not huge changes like the entire leveling system or skill system or something, but we can sure as hell persuade them about smaller things. SO many people think the game is complete... its still in Pre-Alpha. That means there are still huge developements going on, like entire towns being worked on and dungeons being added. They are nowhere near done.

Yeah, I worded it wrong. Fixed!

Agreed, however I will not stop trying to get magic weapon particle effects. This is my goal and I honestly don't feel it is too late in the dev process to ask for them, seeing as how in Oblivion frost and fire particle effects were practically in the game, just as that weapon destruction spell and those ghost weapons that you couldn't use. I want my swords blade to be ON FIRE if it is enchanted with fire damage, dancing electricity around my blade. This is all I ask, I don't care about spears, riding dragons, or vampire clans, I don't care about crossbows I DON'T EVEN CARE ABOUT HAVING HORSES just please please give me a flaming sword please o come on just one :violin:

At least two thirds of the ideas brought up in this forum can't be implemented at this point, developement is too far along. However they could influence work done on DLC or later games so these discussions aren't simply a waste of space. (Granted a lot of people discussing level scaling seem concerned that Bethesda will use an Oblivion-like system despite Bethesda devs repeatedly saying that it didn't work and despite a very different system being used in Fallout 3.) It is good for people to be aware that Skyrim is quite far along in its developement so suggestions made now are unlikely to affect the product released in November but as long as that is understood there is no reason not to discuss these things.

Third, all of the screens are taken during the pre-alpha phase; They are not finished with the game yet!

I doubt this is correct, has Bethesda actually said they're from a "pre-alpha" build? It seem to me that these screenshots are from at least an alpha build and quite possibly from the game's beta. Morrowind has a handful of pre-alpha screenshots released (with full disclosure that there were renders intended to represent likely gameplay) but everything else was from an alpha or beta build. I'm not aware of any pre-alpha screenshots released for Oblivion. Given how late in the developement cycle Bethesda revealed Skyrim it wouldn't surprise me if their initial screenshots were from a late-alpha version of the game. I'd be surprised if they had entered beta-testing by the time it was unveiled but they could easily be in that phase now which means some screenshots could potentially be from the beta.

You have some good ideas but if you want to clear up misconceptions I strongly suggest citing every single detail you bring up. It looks to me like there's more than a little speculation in your post which means you could easily be passing on incorrect assumptions as clarifications, and that would be rather detrimental to your goals.

What people think it should be like and what it will be like are two different things. There's nothing wrong with people discussing what they feel level scaling should be like.

How do you know it wasn't because the developers felt that way regardless of their sharing the same sentiment with players?

Don't they need 2 to 3 months to manufacture all the discs and make the game box in the factory and then ship them out to stores across the globe and do business deals with various companies & stores?

I addressed that by saying that it's either pre-alpha, alpha, or beta phase.

Even though I could be wrong on that, it's likely true that it's on one of those phases.

Moderators do not work for Bethesda or Zenimax. They were members of the community appointed to keep this place civil and tidy. From what I heard, they don't even get a big heads up notice when major titles are to be announced.

Most of the devs have been pretty tight lipped in terms of information. We've received most of our information from helpful forum members posting info from magazines, interviews and videos.

I've wondered about this myself. Isn't this called “going gold”?

This.

So if we assume an August or September 1 (very latest) date, then we're four months from deadline.

Mikedzines is correct, moderators are not employees and we aren't privy to any details that haven't been released to the public. We'll occasionally be told that something big is going to be released "tomorrow" or "in the next few days" but not always - it was never suggested that we watch the Spike game award and when I didn't see any admin lurking around the forums before the awards started I assumed it was safe to go play Minecraft for a few hours :)

You should also add that the Dragons are NOT from Akavir, as I am still seeing posts about it.

I remember an Akaviri related quest in Oblivion. If I'm not mistaken dragons were related to some attacks. The Skyrim dragons aren't necessarily from Akavir, but who knows for sure?

2-3 months? No. Games usually go gold at most a month before hand.

Edit: I actually just checked Oblivion's date as to which it went gold and it was around 20 days before release.
