a few questions....

Post » Wed May 02, 2012 2:06 pm

i have installed morrowind goty a few days ago, and i have also installed the unoffical 1.6.5 BETA patch. question now: does it really work? because when i enter the game, the information in the left bottom corner doesn't show that the game is at 1.6.5, but at 1.6.1820.

and...

race: nord
specialization: stealth
favoured attributes: endurance and strength
birthsign: the atronach
major skills: block, heavy armor, mysticism, security, sneak
minor skills: alchemy, enchanting, long blade, short blade, speechcraft

is this character any good?
i basically want a powerful character but with a little touch of an assassin. the things that bothers me are sneak and short blade. is sneak worth enough to be a major skill or should i pick something more useful? and what about short blade? i have put it there because i plan to use short blades (as well as long blades though, so don't think that i am going to throw that one out ), and also because it is the only skill in my major/minor skill tree that has speed as its governing attribute, so that i can get good multipliers when i level up. short blade or not? is it ok to have two weapon skills as favoured ones?
what about the favoured attributes? is the little increase in health worth it or should i take other favoured attributes to raise those attributes that are kinda weak at the beginning to balance my character? which would be agility and personality in that case... they both start with 30.

also, what mods do you recommend? :D

That character is not great, but it is all your choice.

Race: Nord (Nords are pretty bad at stealth)
Specialization: Stealth ( " ")
Favoured Attributes: Strength and Endurance (These are generally combat attributes, not stealth ones)
Major Skills: Block, Heavy armor, mysticism, security, sneak (An Assassin with heavy armor seems a bit weird and makes you need strength just to carry it. Also, not a single weapon skill here?)
Minor Skills: Alchemy, Enchanting, Long Blade, Short Blade, Speechcraft (I would ditch enchanting and make a choice between the weapon skills.)

I recommend LGNPC mods.

well, i took the nord because of its immunity to frost and resistance to shock. why is nord a bad at stealth? is it the size that governs that, or just because he does't really fit into that role from a RP point of a view?
i didn't include a weapon skill as a major skill because weapon skills level up quite fast.
does heavy armor make noise when sneaking? or is it just the weight that makes it uncomfortable for sneaking?

i want more of a warrior, just with a little stealth touch

edit: the mod seems nice... i am just checking it out :D

Nords aren't good sneakers at start because they start with decreased Agility (30), its governing attribute, and get no bonus to Stealth skill like Khajiit and Wood Elves. 30 Agility just means that you cannot train your Sneak above level 30 at that point. No other drawbacks.

Quite the contrary, that character is good for role playing purposes! It's pretty versatile and you don't see something like that every day. :)

Heavy Armor doesn't affect Sneaking other than it generally slows your character like any other weight. And it FEELS wrong for many players to have a sneaking Heavy Armor user! ;P

Good luck hitting anything with a weapon at start since you don't have any as a Major Skill. Good luck managing to Sneak on anyone, too. Sneaking isn't easy at start even if you had the +10 racial bonus - and you haven't.

I dislike heavy armor on a stealth character because it forces you to train stealth. High level heavy armor is ridiculously heavy. So heavy in fact that weaker characters (mages) might be overencumbered by just wearing it. In other words it forces you to train your strength which in my opinion is not the most handy ability for sneak characters to have.

Here's the build I suggested:

Nord
Specialization: Stealth
Favorite Attributes: Strength and Agility
Birthsign: The Atronach
Major Skills: Axe, Heavy Armor, Mysticism, Security, Sneak
Minor Skills: Speechcraft, Long Blade, Block, Alchemy, Enchanting

Here's what I would've liked to suggest, but I think I would've taken too much liberties.

Female Nord (Willpower +10, Endurance -10 from Male, to help getting Mysticism trained up and thus get it work even without much usage. Not many level-up points should then be put to Willpower.)
Specialization: Stealth
Favorite Attributes: Strength and Agility (for weapons, Sneak and Block)
Birthsign: The Lady (+25 Personality for Speechcraft and +25 Endurance to more than take back the gender loss and to govern armor type(s).)
Major Skills: Axe, Medium Armor, Mysticism, Security, Sneak
Minor Skills: Speechcraft, Long Blade, Block, Alchemy, Armorer

Talk about an all-rounder... I can see him getting Sneak to work every now and then, but there might be trouble with, say, Alchemy and Speechcraft. Enchanting would've been too hard. It's an option, though, as well as is Heavy Armor as a secondary armor. I think he'll need Armorer though, and save his money on potions and training and, if very rich, enchanting. Short Blades ditched for good for more variety and the fact that Nords are better with any other weapon type.

Very good but what about Marksman? That should be a major for an all around build IMHO.

Does not really fit with the theme I think.

Yeah, he would still have difficult time with any ranged attacking. I thought of that Nord as a berzerker/stealth/Mysticism-user without far-reaching weapons... Just sneak, bash and teleport to safety. (S)he's, like, balancing between a calculating melee-battler and a brute Nord! :D

We discussed the OP's character via PMs, and now OP says he's abandoning sneaking! 0_0 Right, but Oblivion and Skyrim both are easier for building a good sneaker, so maybe it's good for a first-timer that he's not trying it in Morrowind.

Ugh, when I first played Morrowind, I tried some characters with Sneak as a skill, like Nightblade and Archer. And I found it pretty tricky to advance it at low levels. For what its worth, I was playing as a Dunmer.
