A fighter's way of opening stuff

Post » Sun Jan 02, 2011 7:16 pm

I was roleplaying a fighter ( a fighter doesn't use alteration or use lock picks) and when I come across a locked chest, I can't do anything.

I thought of a fighter's way of opening them locked chests- bashing

This way, you could bash the [censored] out of locked chests. The difficulty would be wood, varnished wood, iron, steel and gold (?)

Well, what do you guys/gals think?

I′d like to be able to bash locks but I don′t think gold should be the hardest. In fact gold should be weaker than steel and probably iron too, but it could go like that but have ebony instead of gold maybe ?

Of course I'd like to see this in Skyrim, so I voted yes. It all depends on if this sort of stuff can be implemented of course. In Oblivion, for instnace, entering thru a door often meant the computer would have to configure an entirely new area. This would feel kinda silly if in Skyrim we bashed thru a door!!!!.. :gun:

...the computer has to do a load screen for 10 seconds

...and NOW we charge into the previously locked maidenhouse! :D ARRRGH!!! :ooo:

fail.

Should have a downside of course : loud noise to attract enemies, maybe chance of injury breaking doors( drain weapon/block skills maybe ), you can use a mace or axe, but try smashing a door with a sword. Also maybe a chance to destroy some of chest contents, especially potions, or damage gems from flawless to normal.

It'd be interesting, but I wouldn't want it overpowered, which it easily could be...

Agreed. I would be silly to bash a steel chest with a dagger, or your bare hands.

Ultima Underworld had this. Different chests would be harder than others to break open (some would not at all) and the trade off was the damage you did to your weapon.

Same with locked doors.

Well since there's no classes or major/minor skills. There's not really any reason to not try to up your security.

I guess for RP reasons if you want to play a mindless warrior oblivious to remotely anything outside smashing things with your hammer...but I'm assuming those people are in the minority.

KotOR2 did this and it worked fantastically. It'd be a great way to balance it and give the lockpicking advantage to thieves.

I remember a thread on this a few months back. I'm in favour of the idea, as long as the "bashing" skill wasn't overpowered and too quick to level up.

As stated this probably would be silly, and ultimately wouldn't work.

Running from my pursuers I, bob and weave through the dank halls

a fire ball screams past me as I take a sharp right

oh no that was my exit from the cave, the "Door" to the cave is locked!

runs up to Door

"bashes" it

*Door opening sound, Loading screen, Ambient music plays*

Fade in from Black...

Meh...Lost my momentum....oh look my pursuers are clumping at the door as they phase in.....lol K

'kick in the door'

I would say depending on you're strength but since there are no more attributes like that ....

Actually should have to do with how 'strong' you character is a weak mageling should have lots of more difficulty to kick in a door, than a broad shouldered nord barbarian ...

Kick in the door would be believable and nice alternatieve for lock picking .... Games like Baldur\s Gate and NVN used to have that ...

What would chests be then? Nothing but a two second chore. Since everybody can open them anyway. No thanks.

This is exactly why it can't happen. Bashing a chest maybe, but not doors.

Then, use a crowbar to destroy the lock on the door.

So your alternative to that situation as a fighter without a lockpicking ability is to forever stay in that cave since you can't bash it open? And if that door wasn't locked, the exact same situation would happen. They'd stack against the door and all momentum would be lost. Your example is weak though, I'm sure there's a better one.

Some kind of tool that has a chance of breaking like a repair hammer.

Yes everything in that post supplements why bashing a door in general would be a gimmick, excellent gameplay option yes... But with seperate cells and world space, kinda doesn't make sense since your basically activating a door and ignoring a lock....

Then there is the talk of skills, what is this going to be listed under.. Security? So.... There's skill in kicking down doors or going at it with a war axe? Mmk

See what strength attribute could have handled? Sigh

This can easily be remedied with a perk under security.

Actually, I was thinking that this could be a separate skill. Mages have alteration for opening doors, and thieves have security.

The downside to Bashing items in ES-II was that it really degraded the item you used to open the chest or door. I remember carrying an Iron Mace just for this job.

It's been done in the earlier games and it worked. As far as bashing while creatures are nearby that can just be not allowed like many other things are not. Also any bashing could (and should) be set to attact any creatures nearby.

The thing is, if you have completely cleared out a dungeon and the only thing left in it is the locked chest sitting in front of you it makes NO SENSE that you have to just walk away and leave it. I know if RL I wouldn't, I'd break the thing open.

Well, in Oblivion, it just contains 15 gold and a bronze amulet, so you can pretty much leave it.
