We're fighting...Jills?

Post » Tue Mar 29, 2011 10:09 pm

It does seem kind of stupid, but at the same time, I think it's really kind of epic, somehow. Maybe if it was spelled Jiills or something. It sounds sort of Tolkienesque.

You'd've thought other sources would have mentioned the name if it were truly something Todd had said. (or indeed that such a crucial point as 'their name' would have come up more frequently in the many, many bits of expo talk he's been doing for this news dump)

That's something I thought of, too. If you look at the differences between the articles, though, quite a few leave out informaiton that's in one or another. Such as the "possible dismemberment" mentioned in one of the articles that's nowhere in the others. Plus, as I mentioned in another thread, it's a rather obscure connection... not one that many fans would even make.

Either way is possible, of course, and I wouldn't rule it out. I just lean towards the "it could be something that Todd said" side.

They should really have been called 'Godzookies'

Lol. That is awesome John.

But seriously everyone, I don't think it was bethesdas intention to think of it as a girl's name.

So if the dragons are called Jills, then if I kill one, do I get to use its meat to make a Jill sandwich?

But anyway, it's true that the name "Jill" doesn't exactly invoke a terrifying beast of destruction, but the name does predate Skyrim, and if these dragons really are Jills, I suspect that name would only be used in some dialog and lore, the actual creatures we fight will likely just be called dragons. And even if every dragon I fight is actually called a "Jill", hopeflly, the way they look and behave will make up for the unfortunate choice of name.

But seriously everyone, I don't think it was bethesdas intention to think of it as a girl's name.

That doesn't change the fact that it sounds like one, and since we naturally make that connection, when we hear it, we still think of a female name.

More serious than my last post since I've done some digging both on google and my own library. There are lots of little things that have similarities to our own culture's mythologies, yes?

The nursery rhyme "Jack and Jill" has roots in Norse myth as the children Hjuki and Bil who were either rescued or kidnapped (different books say different things) by Mani, the god of the Moon. They ride with him in his chariot and represent the waning and waxing aspects of the Moon, respectively. In one book it says she is the daughter of Ivaldi, also known as Vidfinner and Svigdar (Champion Drinker) who was part of one of two families of Elf-smiths working in Asgard.

In one book, it states that the skalds petitioned Bil to sprinkle them with song-mead from the Moon. And the Milky Way was known as Bil's Way. Lots of references to the moon and the stars.

I don't know if any this has anything to do with the name of the dragons we'll be facing in Skyrim but that was the only reference to a Jill I could find in any sort of mythology. Be interesting to see what the more lore-savvy members make of it. Me? I like the name. It's different.

Thank you for that link, it was a great read.

This is something I've never quite understood. Unless I'm mistaken, Bethesda are the ones that created TES and all the lore. So it seems weird to me, when people are on the forums saying that BGS isn't doing the lore right, or whatever. They created it, who else would know it and how to progress with it better than them?

On topic, I don't mind the name. Not a big deal.

Then would you be happy if they were called "Happy Fluffy Kittehs"

What is wrong with that name? I mean it would be kind of cool.

Friend: "Yo man what are you facing right now?

Me: "I'm facing some Happy Fluffy Kittehs!"

Friend:""

Uh, theres a big difference between Jills and "Happy fluffy Kittehs". Bethesda isn't stupid enough to name something that, and Jill isn't a terrible name. Its not something out of the ballpark, so who cares?

That's as terrible a logic as Ive ever seen one. Jerzey's point is valid: if names dont matter, then just calling them Kittens shouldnt matter. Since it DOES matter, your argument falls flat on its ass. The "difference" between Jill and Happy kittehs is completely subjetive and arbitrary on your part.

Argument fail.

Jill isnt a terrible name.
Especially not when seen in the context of dragon language and the Nord language.
Its not overly obvious and 'trying to sound cool', and I like that.
Too many horlocks and nefarites and hellrazers out there.
I like it.

They could call em kittens and I couldn't care less. I'll enjoy fighting them, not wonder why they're called Jills rather than something else. A rose by any other name is just as sweet.

I don't like that the BIG EVIL ENEMY are ... THE JILLS! Due to the fact that it's not an imposing or threatening name for an enemy. Our enemies in the past were the unknown Sixth House, let by the devil Dagoth Ur, and the army of Daedra led by Mehrunes Dagon.

Now, we must face the JILLS!

You know what I mean? It's not a big deal, just changing the name to nearly anything would be more fearsome. These are dragons... with a bad girls name.

I'm going to hope that the J is pronounced as a Y, as least until I hear it spoken in game. If it is pronounces as the name Jill...well I'm sure I've heard worse names in games, but none come to mind right now...

You will be happy to learn that Jill is untranslated. And since we are dragonborn and can understand, hence translate the language, you shoul be satisfied by simply knowing their true name fully translated: super mega terminator death lizard ninja pirates.

Fun fact: male hawks are called tercels, and females are called formels. You probably didn't know that, unless you hang out in an unusual crowd. Everyone just calls them hawks, yes?

If the technical term for a female dragon is a "jill", that doesn't mean it'll come up a lot. It may be almost as rare as the gendered words for hawk. The word may have slipped off Todd's tongue, since he's probably neck-deep in lore right now. Or the writer may have been a huge lore fan, and known the word beforehand. That doesn't mean it'll show up a lot in the game.

Don't worry, be happy!

For anybody wondering why Jill is defined as mastvrbation, here is your answer:

#1 Take your right hand and hold it in front of you, palm facing forwards.

#2 Look at what your fingers spell (Thumb and index = J, middle = i, ring and pinkie = ll)

You ever say a word so many times that you wonder where the word ever came from? Then it's hard to picture the word with the object it's supposed to represent? Try saying Jill about 30 times in a row and you'll forget it's even someone's name. Problem solved.

If we have to kill jill then first we'll have to find an old monk to teach us the 'five point palm exploding heart technique', that's if there's hand to hand of course.
